NEROCA FC snatch late goal to hold TRAU FC to 1-1 draw

Imphal, Jul 30 (PTI) NEROCA FC snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw against 10-man TRAU FC in their Group E opener at the 134th IndianOil Durand Cup here on Wednesday. The Imphal Derby lived up to its billing as Khunjamayum Raj Singh's second-half goal gave TRAU the lead, but a stoppage-time equaliser by Arunkumar Singh, denied them all three points in a fiercely contested encounter at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium. The match kicked off with NEROCA FC pressing high and dictating tempo early on. Their first real chance came in the opening minutes when skipper Angom Kinesh Singh's shot was blocked by TRAU defender Rakesh, and Mark Harrison fired the rebound wide. As the game progressed, TRAU came into the contest, finding their rhythm in midfield and enjoying a spell of possession, though both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances. Despite flashes of attacking intent, neither side registered a shot on target in the first 30 minutes. The second half began with the same ferocity. In the 47th minute, NEROCA's Roger Khuman saw his effort blocked, and further chances from Mark Harrison and Nongthongbam Japes, went wide of the mark. It was TRAU who finally broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. Right-back Khunjamayum Raj Singh surged forward from near the corner flag and delivered what seemed like a cross, but the ball curled into the goal, glancing past NEROCA keeper Santosh Singh to give TRAU a 1-0 lead. NEROCA tried to respond quickly, with Japes nearly through in the 62nd minute, but TRAU's defence, led by Dhananjoy Singh, held firm. Jackson Gomado had another go in the 68th minute, but his shot was again blocked by a resilient TRAU backline. Drama unfolded in the 73rd minute when TRAU's Dhanachandra Mutum received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving his side to play the remaining minutes with 10 men. With the game heading into stoppage time, TRAU dropped deep to defend their slender lead. But NEROCA finally found the breakthrough in the 96th minute after a well-orchestrated build-up. A cross from the left flank by Zlex was headed across goal by NFC player Waikhom to Arunkumar Singh, who timed his dive perfectly to nod the ball into the bottom corner and secure a dramatic late equaliser. Shillong Lajong FC opens campaign with a dominating victory over Malaysia team

Shillong Lajong FC began their 134th Indian Oil Durand Cup campaign in commanding fashion, defeating Malaysia's Armed Forces Football Team (ATM FT) 6-0 in the opening match of Group E here at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Everbrightson Sana and Phrangki Buam scored a brace each, while substitutes Treimiki Lamurong and Deibormame Tongper added a goal apiece as the young Shillong side delivered a clinical and confident performance. Shillong Lajong head coach Birendra Thapa opted for a youthful 4-3-3 formation, with Sheen Stevenson and Phrangki Buam leading the line alongside Everbrightson Sana in a false nine role. Malaysian Armed Forces FT, coached by Mohamad Khairil Hafiz Mohd. Zanggi started with a strong XI in the same system, featuring Mohd Suhaim, Nasir Yasa, and Ibramin Muhamat Moha in attack. The match began with Shillong asserting their dominance in possession. Their early pressure paid off in the 12th minute when Everbrightson Sana headed in a pinpoint cross from Rudra Ved, after a smart freekick routine initiated by Sheen Stevenson. The young Indian side continued to test the Malaysian Armed Forces defence with fluid attacking play and relentless pressing. Malaysia's best chance in the first half came through a volley attempt by Mohamad Syamim Yusoff, which narrowly missed the target after a cross was punched clear by Shillong keeper Siwel Rymbai. However, the Shillong defence, led by skipper Kenstar Kharsong and Saveme Tariang, remained firm to protect the lead. The second half saw Shillong accelerate further. Within the first five minutes, Phrangki Buam netted twice, first by guiding in a freekick from Stevenson in the 47th minute, and then doubling his tally with a calm finish after a clever through ball two minutes later. Durand Cup to champion North-East football with five-state host plan

Asia's oldest football tournament, the Durand Cup, will be back with its 134 th Edition and for the first time in its storied history, be hosted in as many as five states with Manipur's capital Imphal, making a comeback after a two-year gap. The Durand Cup Organising Committee also announced the dates for this year's tournament to be between July 22- August 23, 2025. Kokrajhar in Assam will extend their status as Durand Cup hosts for the third consecutive year while Jamshedpur in Jharkhand and Shillong in Meghalaya were added as hosts last year. The century-old tournament shifted its home base to Kolkata – the Mecca of Indian Football, and the capital of West Bengal, from Delhi back in 2019, and will also continue to hold that status for a sixth consecutive edition. Since its transition to the East, the Durand Cup has reinstated itself as the country's premiere competition, growing from 16 teams to 24 teams, including participation from all the Indian Super League (ISL) teams. Organised by the Eastern Command of the Indian Army on behalf of the three Services, the tournament is unique in the sense that it pits Services teams against India's best football clubs and over the past couple of editions, has also seen foreign participation with Army teams from neighbouring nations. The Indian Army's stated vision of expanding the reach of the historic tournament throughout the East and North-East is also now fully reflected with the choice of host cities this year. All State Governments and local autonomous bodies have wholeheartedly pledged their support like always for the popular tournament which has captured the imagination of the football loving people of the region. A total of six venues, two in Kolkata (Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan and Kishore Bharti Krirangan) and one each in Imphal (Khuman Lampak stadium), Ranchi (Morhabadi Stadium) or Jamshedpur (JRD Tata Sports Complex), Shillong (Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium) and Kokrajhar (SAI Stadium) have been earmarked for the 134 th IndianOil Durand Cup edition. North East United FC are the defending champions having overcome maximum title-holders Mohun Bagan, in a thrilling final last year to get their historic maiden title.
