Are you registered to become an organ donor? Find out why this is essential

August is a special month for organ donations. Indian Organ Donation Day is observed every year on August 3, commemorating India's first successful deceased donor heart transplant on August 3, 1994. On this day, people from various organisations honour the lives of organ donors. The purpose of celebrating this day is to create awareness about deceased donor organ donation and its impact on improving patient quality of life. Additionally, World Organ Donation Day is marked on August 13, to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and to encourage people to consider becoming organ donors. The importance of organ donation As of March 2020, more than 1,12,000 Indians were waiting for a transplant, and a new name was added to the national transplant waiting list every 10 minutes. As per a 2020 research report in India, every day, 20 patients who are in dire need of an organ transplant die due to the unavailability of organs. Raising awareness about organ donation is an important way to help clear the lacunae between the number of persons in need of organ transplants and the number of donors, and to create a platform to encourage more people to be front-line soldiers for a noble cause. According to the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation, India's organ donation rate has increased from 0.05 per 10 lakh population to 0.8 per 10 lakh population in the duration of a few years. However, it presents a stark contrast when compared with other countries: Croatia's 36.5, Spain's 35.3, and the United States 26 per 10 lakh populations, respectively. Types of organ donations There are different types of organ donations: people can donate an organ or part of their organ while alive, to benefit a patient, or can be an organ donor after their death, once consent is obtained from their family. Here is a breakdown of how organ donation works: Living donor organ donation: Any person not less than 18 years of age, who voluntarily authorises the removal of any of his organ and/or tissue, during his or her lifetime, as per prevalent medical practices for therapeutic purposes. Living donor organ donation: A person, during his/her life can donate one kidney (the other kidney is capable of maintaining the body functions adequately for the donor), a portion of pancreas (half of the pancreas is adequate for sustaining pancreatic functions) and a part of the liver (the segments of the liver will regenerate after a period of time in both recipient and donor). Deceased donor and deceased donor organ donation: Anyone, regardless of age, race or gender, can become an organ and tissue donor after his or her death (brainstem/cardiac). Consent of near relative or a person in lawful possession of the dead body is required. If the deceased donor is under the age of 18 years, then the consent from one of the parents or any near relative authorised by the parents is essential. Medical suitability for donation is determined at the time of death. A person can donate multiple organs and tissues after (brain-stem/cardiac) death. His/her organs continue to live in another person's body. Each potential donor can save up to eight lives, of persons who are in need of organs such as the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, heart, and pancreas. In addition, they can vastly improve the quality of life for countless more by donating bone, skin, heart valves, corneas etc. How do you become an organ donor? You can become a donor by expressing your wish to do so on an authorised organ and tissue donation form. You may pledge to donate your organs by signing up on and registering yourself as a donor, or, for offline registration you may download Form 7 from the website and mail to NOTTO's address in New Delhi. It is important to remember that not all people who pledge to donate their organs are suitable for organ donation. Only a few people die in circumstances where they are able to donate their organs. That is the reason we need more people to take the pledge for organ donation and register themself as potential donors. Through organ donation, part of you continues to live, even after your death. New heart, new hope: Teen transplant survivor heads home on Organ Donation Day

Mumbai: When 13-year-old Khansa Sayyed left Mumbai for Jalna on Saturday afternoon, she carried a new heart and the hope of returning to school next year. The child underwent a heart transplant at Fortis Hospital in Mulund on July 18, after a family donated their brain-dead son's heart at a Pune hospital. She was discharged on Indian Organ Donation Day on Saturday after making an "exceptionally quick recovery," said transplant surgeon Dr Satish Javali. Union health and family welfare minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, speaking at a function to felicitate organ donor families and state officials, announced that India achieved a milestone by performing 18,900 transplants in 2024. He stated that India is only behind the US and China in the number of transplants conducted annually. Despite this progress, lakhs of organ-failure patients continue to face long waiting periods for an organ. Khansa, for instance, received a heart after seven months of registering for a cadaveric or deceased heart donation. "My daughter went happily to attend the Independence Day parade at school last year, but was so exhausted and weak that she could never return to school thereafter," said her father Rahim Sayeed, a vegetable seller from Badnapur near Jalna. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How to Ease Knee Pain Without Injections or Side Effects Read More Undo She was diagnosed with heart failure and registered for a heart transplant at Fortis Hospital in January. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai At the Delhi function on Indian Organ Donation Day, union health secretary Nivedita Shukla Verma noted that India's organ donation rate remains under 1% relative to the population. Over 63,000 individuals currently need kidney transplants, and around 22,000 require liver transplants, she said. In Maharashtra, more than 9,000 are awaiting a kidney donation. Verma highlighted the govt's efforts to strengthen the transplantation ecosystem through NOTTO, which now has over 3.3 lakh registered donors. Meanwhile, in Mumbai, a volunteer who worked to create awareness about organ donation saved 10 lives when his family donated his organs. The volunteer, Kabir Mehta, 57, was declared brain dead after his brain aneurysm ruptured, and his family donated his heart, liver, kidneys, corneas, and skin at H N Reliance Hospital, Girguam, on July 29. Mehta and his wife, Dr Bijal, were part of the Shrimad Rajchandra Organ Donation Programme (SRODP) for over a decade and signed pledges years back. "Mr Mehta and his wife, Dr Bijal, were involved in spreading awareness about organ donation in Mumbai for over a decade," said an official of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), which coordinates the sharing of organs between various hospitals. Deceased organ donations have improved in the city, with 59 donations recorded in 2024. So far this year, 32 donations have taken place. Minister announces lab for organ donation at Wenlock

Mangaluru: Minister for health and family welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao said that a satellite laboratory for complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) crossmatch during organ transplantation to assess the compatibility between a donor and recipient will be established at Government Wenlock District Hospital, with support from Bangalore Medical Services Trust (BMST). He was speaking at the Indian Organ Donation Day programme, organised by the health and family welfare department, in association with Dakshina Kannada district administration, zilla panchayat, and Yenepoya Medical College, on Friday. The minister said that blood samples are currently being sent to Bengaluru for CDC crossmatching during organ transplantation. Similar labs will also be set up in Mysuru and Shivamogga, he said. Emphasising the need to dispel misconceptions about organ donation and to encourage more people to come forward, the minister said that organ donation can save many lives as a brain-dead person can donate up to eight organs. "Families choose to donate the organs of their loved ones even during moments of immense grief. Such decisions are highly commendable, as it gives a new lease of life to others," he said. The minister lamented that even when the demand for organs is rising, the availability remains limited. In Karnataka, 4,582 people are awaiting kidney transplants, 583 are registered for liver transplants, 133 for heart transplants, and 31 for lung transplants, he said. In 2024, 162 donors contributed 457 organs in the state. In 2025, up to July, 121 donors donated 326 organs. Karnataka ranks second in the country for organ donation, the minister said and announced that Karnataka will receive the 'Best State in Promoting Organ Donation Excellence Award' from the govt of India on Saturday. The Jeeva Sarthakathe coordinator from Hubballi-Dharwad will receive the 'Best Coordinator Award'. The govt has decided to give priority to donors' families if they require organ transplants in the future. All district govt hospitals will be strengthened to facilitate the retrieval of organs from brain-dead patients, he said. State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) – Jeevan Sarthakathe state coordinator Dr Ravishankar Shetty K noted that India witnesses 1.5 lakh accidental deaths annually, yet only about 550 organ transplants are performed. DHO Dr HR Thimmaiah, Dr Mallika B, divisional deputy director department of health and family welfare, Wenlock Hospital superintendent Dr Shivaprakash DS, Lady Goschen Hospital superintendent Dr Durgaprasad MR, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) pro chancellor Dr BH Sripathi Rao, and others were present.
