Man shot at over monetary dispute in Delhi's Geeta colony
Three men allegedly shot at a 25-year-old man after a scuffle over a monetary dispute in Delhi's Geeta Colony area, police said on Wednesday. The police said that Sharma has a previous case registered against him under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.(Unsplash/representational) The incident took place at around 10.30 pm on Tuesday near Taj Enclave, they said. The complainant, Shivam Sharma who is a resident of Jagatpuri, told police that he had lent money to a couple -- Sheetal and her husband Sonu -- who live in Kundan Nagar. However, despite repeated requests, they did not return the money, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said. Early Tuesday, Sharma had a heated argument with the couple near Jagatpuri red light and later in the day, when he, along with his friend Jatin Nagpal, went to Taj Enclave to discuss the matter, three men -- Shadab, Harshu and Raman -- confronted them and a scuffle ensued between them, he said. During the altercation, Shadab allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired two rounds at Sharma. "The complainant managed to escape unhurt by lowering himself as the shots were fired," the DCP said. According to the police, a case has been registered at Geeta Colony police station under BNS sections pertaining to attempt to murder and the Arms Act and efforts are on to nab the accused. The police said that Sharma has a previous case registered against him under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigation is underway.

Fact Check: No Panchayat Polls in J&K yet, FAKE notification goes viral
A notification announcing the schedule for Panchayat Polls in Jammu and Kashmir has gone viral on social media. The document, allegedly from the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, claims that elections will be held after November shared the photo of the document on social media, claiming that the local body polls were going to be held in the Valley after almost eight India Today Fact Check found that this notification is fake. To date, no such announcement has been made by the Chief Electoral Office of Jammu and ProbeLooking closely at the viral notification, we noticed that the word 'facilitate' was incorrectly written as 'pacilitate' in the third point, which is highly unlikely in any government notification. A keyword search to confirm whether any schedule of the Panchayat Polls for Jammu and Kashmir had been announced also yielded no the viral image using Google Lens led us to a post, dated August 5, from the official account of the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, which debunked this notification with the caption: "Fake news alert."India Today Fact Check also reached out to a senior official in the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department of Jammu and Kashmir, who confirmed that the State Election Commission is the only competent authority to notify a schedule for Panchayat elections. He added that no such timeline had been officially announced yet. He also said, "The public is advised not to fall prey to such misinformation. Circulating fake government orders is a punishable offence under the Information Technology Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code."It is worth noting that in July 2023, the State Election Commission of Jammu and Kashmir hinted that the Panchayat polls could be held in October that year. Later, however, it was postponed, and in October 2024, the Jammu and Kashmir government extended the mandate of the Local Bodies, hinting that the Panchayat and urban local body elections would be also found the official notification of the announcement of the 2018 Panchayat Elections in Jammu and Kashmir on the official website of the Chief Electoral Officer. SC says scolding isn't abetment to suicide, quashes case against hostel in-charge

After the incident, the student hanged himself in a room.A bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Prashant Kumar Mishra stated that no ordinary person could have imagined that a scolding would result in such a top court set aside an order of the Madras High Court, which had refused to discharge the teacher for the offence of abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code."Having considered the matter in its entirety, we find it a fit case for interference. As has rightly been submitted by the appellant, no normal person could have imagined that a scolding, that too based on a complaint by a student, would result in such a tragedy due to the student so scolded taking his own life," the bench apex court said such scolding was the least to ensure that the complaint made against the deceased by another student was taken note of and remedial measures were effected."In the considered opinion of this court, under such admitted factual position, no mens rea (knowledge of wrongdoing) can be attributed to the appellant, much less, with regard to abatement of suicide committed by the deceased," the bench man, through his lawyer, had submitted that his response was justified and was merely a chiding as a guardian to ensure that the deceased did not repeat the offence, and to maintain peace and tranquillity in the had submitted that there was nothing personal between him and the deceased.
