Mumbai Customs plans to cut international passenger clearance time from 10 minutes to 5

In a move that is likely to ease congestion, Mumbai Customs is working on a plan to reduce clearance time for international passengers from 10 minutes to 5 minutes by introducing automation and AI-based systems. 'We are developing a new system called CAPIT, in which we are trying to use AI and ML rather than rely on random checks or manual profiling. Earlier, we would mark bags with chalk or pen. Now, the system flags baggage electronically and connects it with the passenger profile internally,' Joseph Gouda, joint director, Indian Revenue Services (IRS), said. He was speaking at a panel discussion on 'Airport passenger infrastructure through innovation' held on Thursday here, ahead of the Inter Passenger Terminal Show (IPTS) 2025. The panel included members from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Mumbai Customs, terminal operations heads from Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports, among others. India currently has over 2,200 aircraft on order and air traffic is projected to double over the next two decades. 'India's aviation growth presents a dual challenge—securing borders while easing the journey for millions of law-abiding passengers. In Mumbai alone, we clear 22,000–25,000 international travellers daily, averaging 10-minute Customs clearance. Our aim is to cut this to five minutes,' Gouda added. At Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), expected to begin operations soon, planning has focused on real-time digital tools and data-based terminal management. Vikram Falodiya, head of terminal operations, NMIA, said, 'At NMIA, we have the best use technology to manage passenger flow and airside operations, including rapid exit taxiway simulations for faster aircraft movement. Passenger experience is a priority. With surging passenger traffic, cities like Mumbai may need new airports by 2040. Despite the volume, our operational teams perform impressively, and Mumbai ranks high globally for efficiency.' The roundtable was a precursor to the upcoming IPTS 2025, which will be held on June 11-12 in Mumbai drawing over 3,000 participants from the aviation, infrastructure and regulatory sectors.

Lucknow News: IRS officer suspended after ‘violent' assualt on junior colleugue over cricket team captaincy

Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer Yogendra Kumar Mishra has been suspended on 4 June – six days after he allegedly assaulted a junior officer inside an Income Tax office during a meeting in the Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow. The suspension order reads that a criminal case is under investigation against Mishra, a 2014-batch IRS officer currently posted in Kashipur, Uttarakhand as Joint Commissioner of Income Tax. Mishra has been attached with Kolkata officer under the jurisdiction of the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (CCA), West Bengal and Sikkim Region, pending inquiry. Mishra has been asked not to leave headquarters without prior permission. The move comes in the wake of serious allegations by Gaurav Garg, a 2016-batch IRS officer posted in Lucknow as Deputy Commissioner. Garg filed an FIR at Hazratganj police station in Lucknow on Friday in which he accused Mishra of a violent, premeditated attack on him on 29 May during a closed-door departmental meeting attended by senior officials. Based on Garg's complaint, a case was registered against Mishra at the Hazratganj police station on Friday under sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 121(2) (causing hurt to public servant), 221 (obstruction of duty), 324(3) (mischief), 352 (intentional insult) and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the BNS, along with relevant sections of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984. The incident is rooted in a dispute over the captaincy of a departmental cricket team earlier this year and involved physical assault, attempted strangulation, and an attempt to stab with a broken glass tumbler, according to reports. On 2 June, Mishra took to X and claimed that he was being targeted for exposing irregularities in tax investigations carried out during his predecessor's tenure in Kanpur. 'I am forced to speak out publicly about the extreme harassment, character assassination and false police complaints being orchestrated against me. The facts must be known,' he wrote in a thread.

CBI arrests senior IRS officer on complaint by La Pinos owner

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday evening arrested Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer Anil Kumar Singal, 2017 batch, from his residence in Delhi for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 45 lakh through an associate to settle an Income Tax notice. The arrest followed a complaint by Sanam Kapoor, owner of La Pinos, a food franchise chain, who claimed he was being harassed with official notices after a business fallout. In 2017, Kapoor had entered into a franchisee agreement with Mumbai-based businessman Harsh Kotak, who was allegedly partnering with Singal's mother in the venture. According to Kapoor's counsel, Gagandeep Singh Jammu, the harassment began after Kapoor discovered last year that Kotak had started procuring raw materials from other sources at cheaper rates, violating their agreement. Though Kapoor had the option to terminate the franchisee contract, he was allegedly coerced into buying it back for Rs 1.6 crore—over six times the original value of Rs 25 lakh. Kapoor soon began receiving multiple notices from the Income Tax and food safety departments. Jammu alleged that Singal demanded Rs 45 lakh to 'close' the I-T notice. They then approached the CBI. On May 30, Kotak met Kapoor in Chandigarh and called him to Singal's Mohali residence the following day. The CBI laid a trap and arrested Kotak on May 31 as he accepted Rs 25 lakh from Kapoor. Later that evening, a CBI team arrested Singal from his Delhi home and seized 2.5 kg of gold jewellery and Rs 30 lakh in cash during a search. A case has been registered against both Kotak and Singal in Chandigarh. Singal will be produced before the duty magistrate in Chandigarh on Sunday.
