‘Industry Meet' to boost MSME standardisation, quality
Eluru: District collector K Vetri Selvi emphasised the immense potential for MSME development in the district, highlighting the crucial role of Bureau of Indian Standards in improving export competitiveness and ensuring global acceptance of Indian products. She inaugurated an 'Industry Meet' organised by the BIS Vijayawada Branch, aimed at raising awareness among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) about the importance of standardisation and quality practices, here on Wednesday. The event was held in collaboration with the Andhra Pradesh Department of Industries and the Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises India (FSME India). Collector Vetri Selvi lauded BIS's consistent efforts in advancing quality and standardisation across the country. Director of BIS Prem Sajani Patnala elaborated on BIS activities, informing attendees about the over 23,000 Indian Standards and the promotion of quality certification. She detailed the benefits of adopting these standards for MSMEs and briefed participants on BIS's Management System Certification schemes. Member of Parliament Putta Mahesh Kumar appreciated BIS's outreach initiatives for MSMEs in Eluru, recognising the region's strong industrial growth potential. D Subramanyeswara Rao, District Industries Officer, Eluru, spoke on how Indian Standards enable global competitiveness and commended BIS's support in facilitating product certification for MSMEs. He also discussed relevant government subsidies and schemes designed to ease the certification process, emphasising how both voluntary and mandatory BIS certifications enhance consumer confidence and product quality. FSME India national president APK Reddy praised BIS efforts, including hallmarking, and initiatives like Standards Clubs, which bring standardisation awareness to students. A comprehensive technical presentation was delivered by Durgum Vivek Vardhan Reddy, Scientist-C and Deputy Director, BIS Vijayawada. His session covered a wide array of topics, including Indian Standards, Quality Control Orders (QCOs), usage of the BIS CARE App, product certification procedures, testing methodologies, and laboratory capabilities. He also explained the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS), which regulates imported goods. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where participants provided valuable feedback. The event saw the participation of over 230 stakeholders, including industry officials from departments such as fire services, electricity, and skill development, as well as other government bodies. The meet served as an effective platform for dialogue and reinforced BIS's continued commitment to quality assurance, safety, and MSME empowerment.

BIS training for TNUHDB engineers gets under way
A two-day capacity building programme, organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Coimbatore Branch, for engineers of the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) got under way in the city on July 29. This initiative is part of BIS's ongoing efforts to promote the implementation of Indian Standards across State government departments, with special focus on urban planning, construction, water systems, and sanitation. The programme aims at strengthening understanding of national standards and encourage their practical application for safe, sustainable, and high-quality infrastructure. Balamurugan, Superintendent Engineer, TNUHDB, inaugurated the programme. It was attended by 28 assistant engineers, assistant executive engineers, and junior engineers, according to a BIS release.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organised a two-day capacity building programme for engineers of Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board that concluded in the city on Wednesday. A press release said the initiative was part of BIS's efforts to promote the implementation of Indian Standards across government departments, with a focus on urban planning, water systems, and sanitation. With these being key operational areas of TNUHDB, the programme covered topics, including urban land development and sustainability regulations, geospatial technologies in resource management and piped drinking water. Meenakshi Ganesan, Deputy Director General (Southern Region), BIS, said it would help engineers to integrate standards in project design and implementation.

The initiative was part of BIS's ongoing efforts to promote the implementation of Indian Standards across state government departments, with a focus on urban planning, construction, water systems, and sanitation — key operational areas of TNUHDB, a release said. The programme was designed to strengthen the understanding of national standards and encourage their practical application for safer, sustainable, and high-quality infrastructure, the national standards body of India said. The training was inaugurated by Meenakshi Ganesan, Scientist-G and Deputy Director General (Southern Region), BIS. Superintendent Engineer, TNUHDB, Balamurugan, Scientist-F and Head of BIS Chennai branch S D Dayanand, and Chief Scientist (Retd), CSIR-NAL/SERC Manjuprasad, spoke. BIS Bengaluru hosts capacity building programme
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Bengaluru Branch Office, conducted a Capacity Building Programme on Wednesday for officials from the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Karnataka. The initiative aimed to enhance awareness and understanding of quality and safety standards in women and child care services. M. Sushma Rao, head of BIS Bengaluru, underscored the bureau's commitment to integrating Indian Standards into public service frameworks. She encouraged active participation from the participants and stressed the importance of applying the knowledge gained to foster quality consciousness in government services. Raghavendra T, director, Department of Women and Child Development, highlighted the critical role of quality and safety in products and services provided under the department's scope. The programme included interactive sessions and discussions aimed at practical implementation of standards. Sixty officials from the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Karnataka participated and engaged in discussions and shared their field level experiences.
