The Indo Daily Extra: Conor McGregor loses appeal in Nikita Hand civil rape case
Today at 12:42 Conor McGregor has lost his challenge against a High Court jury's finding that he raped Nikita Hand in a Dublin penthouse. Ms Hand sued the former MMA fighter for damages for raping her at the Beacon Hotel on December 9, 2018. Last November, a jury of eight women and four men found that McGregor (37) civilly liable for the assault and awarded her almost €250,000 in damages. McGregor had told the trial that he had consensual sex with Ms Hand and launched an appeal against the jury's decision on a number of grounds. Speaking outside the High Court, Ms Hand thanked her legal team, the rape crisis centre, and three judges of the appeal court. 'I'm deeply grateful for everyone who supported me, believed in me and stood by my side during this long and painful journey. 'This appeal has retraumatised me over and over again. 'Being forced to relive it, what has happened has had a huge impact on me. 'For every survivor out there, I know how hard it is but please don't be silent, you deserve to be heard, you also deserve justice. 'Today I can finally move on and try to heal. Thank you.' Asked if she had any message for Conor McGregor, Ms Hand said 'no thank you'. Today on this Indo Daily Extra, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Robin Schiller, Senior Journalist with The Irish Independent to ask, is this the end of the line for Conor McGregor, in a case that gripped the nation?

The Indo Daily Extra: Trump's Gamble – striking Iran, backing Israel and raising the stakes
It's a move that could ignite a regional firestorm and potentially set a worrying precedent in how countries engage in conflict. The world is braced for Iran's response after the US attacked key Iranian nuclear sites, taking a gamble by joining Israel in the biggest Western military action against the Islamic Republic since its 1979 revolution. With the damage visible from space after 30,000lb US bunker-buster bombs crashed into the mountain above Iran's Fordow nuclear site, Tehran vowed to defend itself at all costs. It fired another volley of missiles at Israel that wounded scores of people and flattened buildings in Tel Aviv. The US State Department ordered employees' family members to leave Lebanon and advised citizens elsewhere in the region to keep a low profile or restrict travel. An advisory from the US Department of Homeland Security warned of a 'heightened threat environment in the United States'. Law enforcement in major US cities stepped up patrols and deployed additional resources to religious, cultural and diplomatic sites. Tehran has so far not followed through on its threats of retaliation against the US – either by targeting US bases or trying to choke off global oil supplies – but that may not hold. Today on this Indo Daily Extra, Tabitha Monahan is joined by Gregg Carlstrom, Middle East Correspondent with The Economist to discuss what might come next after a troubling 2 days for international relations.

The Indo Daily Extra: Pope Leo XIV – A progressive papacy or a rollback to more traditional Catholic values?
The conclave was short - barely 36 hours. Which means one thing: Pope Leo had the votes. But why him? Why now? And what does it mean that the next leader of 1.4 billion Catholics comes not from the Global South, where the faith is growing, but from the backyard of Donald Trump? Today on this extra episode of the Indo Daily, Ellen Coyne is joined by Michael Kelly, director of public affairs for Aid to the Church in Need, who has covered two previous conclaves, to ask whether the election of 69-year-old Pope Leo XIV will be a continuation of Pope Francis' gentle revolution or a rollback to more traditional Catholic values. The Indo Daily Extra: Pope Francis' death - his trip to Ireland, legacy and what happens next?
He was 88, and had suffered various ailments in his 12 year papacy. The death of a pope triggers a formal and lengthy period of mourning complete with many historic rituals that are completed before cardinals gather to elect a successor. These rituals include: certifying his death by calling out his name three times, sealing his apartment doors with red ribbons, and breaking his papal ring with shears. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said news of Pope Francis' death was cause for great sadness because of the departure of "a great man, a great shepherd". "I had the privilege of enjoying his friendship, his advice, his teachings, which never ceased not even during times of trial and suffering," Meloni said in a statement. "We say goodbye to the Holy Father with a heart full of sadness." Today on this Indo Daily Extra, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Kevin Doyle, Group Head of News at Mediahuis Ireland, and Vatican based reporter Paddy Agnew, to look back at his trip to Ireland in 2018, examine his legacy and ask what happens next as the Catholic Church searches for a new pontiff.
