India Registers 50.7% Rise In Turmeric Exports, Global Market Share At 66%
New Delhi: India's turmeric exports have recorded an over 50.7 per cent jump to $341.54 million for the financial year 2024-25 compared with the corresponding figure of $226.58 million of the previous fiscal year, the Parliament was informed on Tuesday. In quantity terms, the exports of turmeric from India were over 1.76 lakh metric tonnes in 2024-25 compared with 1.62 lakh metric tonnes in 2023-24, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. India holds a 66 per cent share of the world market in turmeric, and the country's top five importers since 2020 are Bangladesh, the UAE, the USA, Malaysia, and Morocco, the minister said. The minister further stated that the Centre, through the Spices Board, is implementing the scheme "Sustainability in Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development (SPICED)" under which various programmes are undertaken to promote the export of spices, including turmeric. These include implementation of food safety and quality assurance certifications, postharvest quality upgradation, support for processing and value addition, and organising training programmes for stakeholders of turmeric aimed at quality improvement and entrepreneurship development. Quality evaluation of export consignments of turmeric through quality evaluation laboratories to ensure compliance with quality specifications of importing countries and organisation of buyer-seller meets to establish direct market linkage between farmers, exporters, and international buyers are other steps that have been taken to promote exports. Further, the National Turmeric Board also takes steps to promote new product development and value addition in turmeric, promote awareness and consumption of turmeric and turmeric products in international markets. Besides, it encourages the building of resilient and sustainable supply chains for turmeric and turmeric products by strengthening forward and backward linkages and facilitates the creation and improvement of infrastructure and logistics for exports of turmeric and turmeric products. The Turmeric Board is also promoting compliance with quality and safety standards across the supply chain of turmeric and helping in capacity building and skill development of turmeric growers for value addition activities, the minister added.

SPICED to boost exports, value addition, farmer empowerment
Kochi, May 22 (UNI) The Spices Board, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, has announced financial assistance under its flagship scheme 'Sustainability in Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development (SPICED)' for the financial year 2025–26. The scheme is designed to strengthen the Indian spices sector by focusing on sustainability, innovation, and export development. Online submission of application will start on May 26. Application under the export development and promotion components of the SPICED scheme for spice exporters can be submitted online until June 30, while applications for development components under other categories for farmers and FPOs can be submitted until September 30, 2025. The SPICED scheme is a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing the productivity of small and large cardamom, improving the quality of post-harvest processes, and encouraging the production and export of value-added, GI-tagged, and organic spices. The scheme is also focused on enabling compliance with global food safety and phytosanitary standards and boosting the capacity of stakeholders across the value chain. The scheme offers support for activities such as replanting and rejuvenation of cardamom plantations, development of water resources, micro-irrigation, promotion of organic farming, and expansion of good agricultural practices (GAP). In addition, it supports the installation of improved post-harvest infrastructure, such as modern dryers, slicers, dehullers, and grading machines to ensure superior product quality. The 'Mission Clean and Safe Spices' component addresses critical gaps in food safety compliance by promoting adoption of food safety and quality certifications. For the benefit of farmers and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), the SPICED scheme provides financial assistance to procure essential post-harvest machines such as spice polishers, turmeric boilers, mint distillation units, and threshing machines. It also emphasizes the establishment of on-farm composting units, adoption of organic certification, and promotion of GI-tagged spices, particularly in the North Eastern Region, to create export-ready spice clusters. The scheme further supports the creation of Spice Incubation Centres and promotes entrepreneurship and product development initiatives aimed at enhancing market access and branding for startups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). In the domain of export development and promotion, the scheme provides assistance for participating in international trade fairs, buyer-seller meets, and other market linkage programs. Special emphasis is given to supporting first-time exporters and small businesses, enabling them to showcase Indian spices in global markets. Through capacity-building efforts, including training and extension services, the scheme aims to empower spice farmers, SHGs, and FPOs with the latest technical know-how, best practices, and market intelligence. Spices Board to disburse ₹130 crore under SPICED Scheme
The Spices Board plans to disburse ₹130 crore to almost 45,000 beneficiaries in 2025-2026 under the SPICED Scheme. The 'Sustainability in Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development' (SPICED) scheme, with a total outlay of Rs. 422.30 crore and end in 2025-2026, is designed to expand area and improve productivity of cardamom and generate an exportable surplus through multiple initiatives. The board disbursed ₹130 crore last fiscal to nearly 40,000 stakeholders. It will accept applications for the SPICED scheme till June 30 under the export development and promotion components while applications for development components under other categories for farmers and FPOs can be submitted until September 30.
