'Chilling' true crime documentary takes Netflix charts by storm
A 'chilling' new true crime documentary released by Netflix has shot up the global charts despite only being dropped earlier this month. A Deadly American Marriage, which dropped on Friday, May 9, investigates the 2015 killing of 39-year-old Jason Corbett, an Irish man living in North Carolina, USA. Corbett's wife, Molly Martens (33 at the time) and her father, Thomas (67 at the time), were both initially found guilty of second-degree murder in 2017, but later had their convictions reversed. They were both released from prison in 2024 after accepting a plea bargain to reduced charges, while Molly and Thomas claim they acted in self-defence after Corbett tried to attack them. Investigations into Corbett's death gained widespread media attention, and this Netflix documentary is the latest episode in the decade-long fatal saga. The documentary features interviews with Molly and Thomas themselves, as well as appearances from Corbett's children – Jack and Sarah – and others involved in the case. Described by critics as 'shocking' and 'excruciating', the documentary keeps a keen eye on how the incident has affected the lives of Jack and Sarah ever since. Corbett had Jack and Sarah during a previous marriage to a woman named Margaret Fitzpatrick, who had tragically died of an asthma attack 10 years earlier. Advertising A Deadly American Marriage, Netflix called it 'a chilling exploration of love and betrayal featuring interviews with those closest to the case'. The true crime documentary has risen up the charts since its release and is now the number three show globally, sitting only behind Nonnas and the 2019 film Inside Man: Most Wanted. 'Just watched this and it's defo one to watch. Messed up,' Sophie Wiles wrote on Facebook, while Nikki Baker wrote: 'Watching it now. So sad for Jason's family and his two children.' Victoria Judge thought A Deadly American Marriage sounded 'sinister' ahead of tuning in, with Netflix's true crime category proving to be one of its most popular. After he left Limerick in Ireland, Corbett and Molly met one another in 2008 when Corbett hired Molly as an au pair, moving to North Carolina three years later. In August 2015, Thomas dialled 911 and said Corbett had been badly injured, claiming that he, Molly, and Corbett had been involved in an altercation. The father and daughter claimed to police that Jason attacked Molly in the middle of the night, also threatening to kill her, leading them to allegedly act in self-defence. More Trending Speaking about the documentary, its directors, Jenny Popplewell and Jessica Burgess, explained to Netflix news site Tudum how they wanted to approach the case. 'This case demonstrates how complex the American justice system is. Where is the truth? Where are the lies? Where is justice? This documentary demonstrates that it's not clear-cut.' They continued: 'From the very beginning, we approached both families. For the film to remain objective and balanced, we never discussed information we learned with either side.' Forgotten sequel to Denzel Washington thriller becomes surprise Netflix hit
A sequel to one of Denzel Washington's biggest thrillers has had a surprise resurgence on Netflix. After lengthy delays, Inside Man: Most Wanted was finally released in 2019, serving as a follow up to Spike Lee's 2006 hit Inside Man. While Denzel and Spike didn't take part, Aml Ameen led the cast as Remy Darbonne, alongside Rhea Seehorn, Roxanne McKee, Akshay Kumar and Jessica Sutton. The movie followed FBI and NYPD officers joining up in a task force in a bid to stop a group of bank robbers holding people hostage in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. While the original blockbuster grossed more than $180million at the global box office, the sequel didn't have quite the same impact, and currently commands a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, it has found new life on Netflix in the UK, and has stormed up the charts to become the second most-watched film of the week, behind grim documentary A Deadly American Marriage. Nonnas, Black Adam, Bad Influence, Havoc and Extraterrestrial also make up the top 10, alongside Mean Girls, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken and Britain and the Blitz. Most Wanted came out in 2019 and took place a few years after the events of the first film – focusing on officers Brynn Stewart (Rhea) and Remy (Aml) as they attempt to bring down a group of robbers targeting a stash of Nazi gold inside a bank. The official synopsis reads: 'A hotshot NYPD negotiator butts heads with the FBI and meets his match in a meticulous criminal mastermind who attempts to rob the Federal Reserve.' The movie divided many and currently boasts an average audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Slamming the flick, Always I penned: 'If your idea for a good sequel is a poor copy of the original premise, transparent foreshadowing, and some bad acting that destroys the films momentum, then this is your jam.' More Trending Jelisije J agreed: 'A very unnecessary sequel that tries to add to the original movie, but at the same time it disrespects it.' 'This is an absolute insult to the original spike Lee film,' an anonymous reviewer fumed. 'Extremely unimaginative and very predictable.' While an unnamed fan praised: 'A heist film that surprisingly turned out better than I thought it was going to. It's a decent popcorn crime film.' Inside Man: Most Wanted is available to stream on Netflix now. Got a story? Netflix's most watched film 'hard to watch' leaving fans 'so angry'
It has earned top spot after just a day Netflix's new most watched film is 'hard to watch' as it leaves fans 'on edge' and 'so angry'. A Deadly American Marriage has even left some viewers feeling 'infuriated'. The film was added to the streaming giant's platform on Friday (May 9) and quickly became one the number one film among UK subscribers. As a result, it has surpassed action titles Havoc and Exterritorial, as well as the sequel Inside Man: Most Wanted. This feature-length true-crime documentary delves into the shocking case of a father's death and the subsequent fallout that ripped a family apart. The synopsis reveals that the film begins with a chilling 911 call and a gruesome scene, before questioning the real story behind Jason Corbett's brutal death. In the documentary, Jason's wife, children, and extended family all reflect on the elusive truths behind their seemingly fairytale life. Jason Corbett, an Irish national and father of two young children, found love again with his American au pair, Molly Martens, in 2008 following the death of his first wife. The couple, along with Jason's kids from his first marriage, Jack and Sarah, relocated from Ireland to North Carolina to start a new life together. In 2015, tragedy struck when Jason Corbett was killed during a violent confrontation at his home. His wife Molly and her father, Thomas Martens, also a retired FBI agent, were later charged with his murder, reports Surrey Live. The documentary in question delves into the grim details of Jason's death—which Molly and Thomas claim was an act of self-defence—the subsequent legal battles, and the toll taken on Jason's young children, Jack and Sarah, who were just 10 and eight years old at the time. Currently, there's a shortage of reviews for this documentary, hence it's missing a Rotten Tomatoes rating. However, one reviewer commented, "This film adds little to our perceptions of the case, but it does show the true cost to children of adult violence." Another reviewer described "A Deadly American Marriage" as a gripping watch filled with shocking revelations, claiming, "A Deadly American Marriage is a shocking and thrilling watch whose twists and turns will leave viewers on edge." Meanwhile, a third critic praised directors Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell for their concise storytelling, saying, "Directors Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell tell Jason Corbett's story economically, resisting the temptation to pad it out with pointless waffle." Netflix aficionados didn't waste any time sharing their opinions online after viewing the film, with many readers moved to a mix of emotions, not least of which is anger. One viewer expressed, "A Deadly American Marriage was a shocking is infuriating. I am so glad Jason picked the right people in his sister and her husband to look after them (the children)." Echoing this sentiment, another person weighed in: "This case infuriates me beyond belief." One viewer commented: "A Deadly American Marriage is a very hard watch." Another chimed in with, "A Deadly American Marriage on Netflix has me so angry!" With the documentary allowing both parties to share their perspectives, a viewer remarked: "A Deadly American Marriage just came out on Netflix. It's very touching, and very hard to determine which side you are on (although I have an opinion)."

Netflix fans keep watching 'underrated' sequel to 'masterpiece' crime thriller
The original plan for the sequel was cancelled Netflix viewers keep watching the 'underrated' sequel to a 'masterpiece' crime thriller that was dubbed 'one of the best heist movies ever made'. Inside Man: Most Wanted is a recent addition to the streaming behemoth's catalogue and has quickly climbed the ranks of most-watched titles. As it stands, the film is sitting pretty in second place among the top 10 films for UK subscribers. This places it snugly between two other fresh releases, trailing just behind the German thriller Exterritorial, but swiftly outpacing Tom Hardy's adrenaline-fuelled action drama Havoc, which now holds third place. The film, originally launched in 2019, is the successor to the 2006 hit Inside Man. The original boasted a star-studded cast including Clive Owen, Jodie Foster and Denzel Washington, under the direction of Spike Lee. Fans have taken to the web to express their adoration for the first film, with one viewer gushing: "One of the the best heist movies ever made in cinema history - story is superb and the ending is unpredictable.", reports Surrey Live. Rumours of a sequel began circulating not long after the original's release. It was suggested that screenwriter Russell Gewirtz would be back to craft the follow-up, with Lee also returning to the director's chair. Washington, Owen, Foster and Chiwetel Ejiofor were all reportedly set to reprise their roles. However, by 2011, all those plans were shelved, and the project for Inside Man 2 was cancelled. Instead, fans got Inside Man: Most Wanted, a direct-to-video project released eight years later. Although set in the same universe as the original, with a portrait of Washington's character visible in the trailer, none of the original cast or crew returned. Most Wanted takes place five years after the events of the original Inside Man. The plot is familiar, as Ariella Barash and her group of robbers execute a well-planned money heist, holding tourists hostage. The NYPD and FBI task forces must collaborate in a race against time to rescue innocent lives. Unfortunately, this follow-up did not receive the same acclaim as the original. While Inside Man achieved an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel has a 69% popcorn meter score from fan-submitted reviews. Despite this, the film has garnered some praise from fans who have shared their views online. One person stated: "This film is one of a kind where you want to just sit down and think and get hooked to what will happen next. Absolutely fantastic!" Another fan added: "Fun movie, intense at times, lots of twists, enjoyable characters, thoroughly enjoyed it. It's underrated." Meanwhile, one viewer disagreed: "The original inside man was incredibly well written acted and directed and a heist movie masterpiece. This was just pure blasphemy and totally unnecessary if you haven't seen the original, watch that instead, of you have seen the original don't taint your memory of a great movie." Fortunately for curious cinephiles who want to discover why the initial film garnered so much acclaim, the original 'Inside Man' is available on Netflix for viewing. It's also up for grabs at no cost on Tubi.
