Netflix's most watched film 'hard to watch' leaving fans 'so angry'

Daily Mirror10-05-2025

It has earned top spot after just a day
Netflix's new most watched film is 'hard to watch' as it leaves fans 'on edge' and 'so angry'.
A Deadly American Marriage has even left some viewers feeling 'infuriated'. The film was added to the streaming giant's platform on Friday (May 9) and quickly became one the number one film among UK subscribers.

As a result, it has surpassed action titles Havoc and Exterritorial, as well as the sequel Inside Man: Most Wanted. This feature-length true-crime documentary delves into the shocking case of a father's death and the subsequent fallout that ripped a family apart.

The synopsis reveals that the film begins with a chilling 911 call and a gruesome scene, before questioning the real story behind Jason Corbett's brutal death. In the documentary, Jason's wife, children, and extended family all reflect on the elusive truths behind their seemingly fairytale life.
Jason Corbett, an Irish national and father of two young children, found love again with his American au pair, Molly Martens, in 2008 following the death of his first wife. The couple, along with Jason's kids from his first marriage, Jack and Sarah, relocated from Ireland to North Carolina to start a new life together.
In 2015, tragedy struck when Jason Corbett was killed during a violent confrontation at his home. His wife Molly and her father, Thomas Martens, also a retired FBI agent, were later charged with his murder, reports Surrey Live.
The documentary in question delves into the grim details of Jason's death—which Molly and Thomas claim was an act of self-defence—the subsequent legal battles, and the toll taken on Jason's young children, Jack and Sarah, who were just 10 and eight years old at the time.

Currently, there's a shortage of reviews for this documentary, hence it's missing a Rotten Tomatoes rating. However, one reviewer commented, "This film adds little to our perceptions of the case, but it does show the true cost to children of adult violence."
Another reviewer described "A Deadly American Marriage" as a gripping watch filled with shocking revelations, claiming, "A Deadly American Marriage is a shocking and thrilling watch whose twists and turns will leave viewers on edge."
Meanwhile, a third critic praised directors Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell for their concise storytelling, saying, "Directors Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell tell Jason Corbett's story economically, resisting the temptation to pad it out with pointless waffle."

Netflix aficionados didn't waste any time sharing their opinions online after viewing the film, with many readers moved to a mix of emotions, not least of which is anger.
One viewer expressed, "A Deadly American Marriage was a shocking watch...it is infuriating. I am so glad Jason picked the right people in his sister and her husband to look after them (the children)."
Echoing this sentiment, another person weighed in: "This case infuriates me beyond belief." One viewer commented: "A Deadly American Marriage is a very hard watch." Another chimed in with, "A Deadly American Marriage on Netflix has me so angry!"
With the documentary allowing both parties to share their perspectives, a viewer remarked: "A Deadly American Marriage just came out on Netflix. It's very touching, and very hard to determine which side you are on (although I have an opinion)."

ITV Deal or No Deal star dealt huge blow minutes into charity special

Alex Brooker is facing off the Banker in tonight's Soccer Aid special A Deal or No Deal contestant has been dealt a huge blow, losing the £100K jackpot just minutes into the ITV show. Saturday Night's (7th June) Soccer Aid episode saw The Last Leg co-host Alex Brooker facing off the Banker, supported by a star-studded panel. ‌ In a bid to win up to £100,000 for UNICEF, Alex gunned for the cash prize assisted by celebrities, including former England player Jill Scott and Irish actor Emmett J. Scanlan. ‌ However, Alex was left devastated when he selected his brother Tom's box, hoping to strike blue. Initially optimistic about his choice, Alex told host Stephen Mulhern "I think my brother Tom, number eight, has got 50p in there [the box.]" Tom was equally confident, agreeing with his sibling that the box likely contained 50p. But the duo were dealt a huge blow as Tom opened his box to find £100,000 inside. The Soccer Aid team was visibly upset, and they were not alone. Viewers have taken to X, formerly Twitter, to echo their frustration at the huge loss. One penned: "Oh no! The £100K is gone," while a second voiced out: "£100K gone. I'm furious and raging." Other ITV fans were quick to question the star's process. "Why hasn't he got a system? Lucky numbers & bad numbers. Looks like he's just choosing randomly with no strategy," quipped one. Speaking to press, Conor revealed he'd sought advice from past winner Greg O'Shea. Islanders are forbidden from revealing their involvement in the series before entering the villa. Fellow Irish rugby player Greg, 30, won series five alongside Amber Gill. Conor shared: "I know Greg through rugby circles so I spoke to him about going on Love Island. "He just said 'be yourself, it's a really really really cool experience that not many people get. "So enjoy it and yeah take it day by day and if you can be yourself you can't really go too far wrong'. "So that's my plan. He was like 'my advice might be a bit different from others because I won'." He added: "I'm 25 and I've only had one relationship and it wasn't very long. "So I feel like I'm maybe doing something wrong or maybe I'm not in the right places. Kyle has since spoken out about being axed saying: 'I fully co-operated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. 'I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.' Masked thugs stormed a wake in Stafford and hacked at a dad with a blade in February. Ashman, 23, was one of two quizzed but released with no further action. Sources said the channel was unaware of the incident and he was not flagged as part of contestant checks. The victim, 38, nearly lost his arm. He was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment and kept in for around two weeks. Another mourner was glassed, one struck with a metal pole, and two people run over by a car during the 15 minutes of terror at a social club in Stafford. Ashman, who lives in the town, was one of two men to be nicked on suspicion of affray then bailed. Police confirmed that after the matter had been investigated the pair were released with no further action only last month. A source said: 'This was a horrific attack which could have been even worse. 'Ashman may have signed up to one of the biggest shows on TV with this hanging over his head.' It is not suggested that Ashman, whose job involves laying and repairing water pipes, was involved in the attack.

Released in the same year as Midsommar, the underappreciated comedy-drama Fighting with My Family is currently on Netflix, but you've only got until Monday, 23rd June to watch it. Directed by The Office legend Stephen Merchant and based on the inspiring story of Norwich-born wrestler Saraya Bevis, aka Paige, this inspiring drama follows her rise to success in the WWE from humble beginnings. As Paige's career goes from strength to strength, her brother Zak Zodiac (played by Jack Lowden) struggles with her new celebrity status. While Fighting with My Family isn't quite as well-known as some of Pugh's more recent hits, it's developed a passionate cult following and is well worth a watch before it leaves Netflix. ‌ In addition to Pugh and Lowden, iconic British stars Lena Headey and Nick Frost star as Paige's parents, while US A-listers Vince Vaughn and Dwayne Johnson also make appearances. Fans have been raving about the film since its release in 2019, with one five-star Google review admitting: 'Honestly obsessed with this film. 'Watched it about 10 times! I'm in such awe when I watch her.' And a final fan called it 'extremely heartwarming, inspiring, funny and just all around fantastic!!!!'
