Trade of obscene videos: Cyber patrol squad gathers details of suspicious social media accounts
A cyber patrol squad of the Kerala Police has identified several suspicious Instant Messaging (IM) application accounts, reportedly created by unidentified persons to facilitate the secret purchase and sale of obscene content.
The investigation, currently in full swing under various cybercrime units, gained momentum following the recent arrest of a suspected youth from Eramangalam village in Kozhikode district. The arrest was based on a tip-off from the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau.
According to police sources, the origin of several videos—allegedly shared to insult women and their family members—has already been traced. Cyber patrol squads from different States are also collaborating to collect and exchange incriminating digital evidence.
'The youth arrested from Kozhikode was reportedly involved in trading objectionable videos via Telegram. His bank account details have provided crucial evidence, revealing suspicious financial transactions linked to the crime,' said a police officer involved in the investigation. He added that more persons connected to the illegal operation are likely to be identified soon.
Cyber officers from both Kozhikode city and rural units said social media surveillance across the State has been intensified in response to increasing complaints from victims. They also revealed that several social media accounts, created and operated by unknown persons based in foreign countries, have been identified recently for legal action and swift deactivation.
