Nara Lokesh lays stone for Rs 22,000 crore ReNew green energy project

ANANTAPUR: Andhra Pradesh marked a significant step toward a sustainable future with the groundbreaking ceremony of a Rs 22,000 crore, 4.8-gigawatt hybrid renewable energy project by ReNew Power in Bethapalli village, Guntakallu constituency, Anantapur district. Minister for Education, IT, and Electronics, Nara Lokesh, laid the foundation stone on Friday and hailed the project as a cornerstone of India's clean energy revolution, signalling the return of industries that had previously left the state. Addressing the gathering, Lokesh hailed the project as a testament to bold decision-making and sustainable progress. 'This is not just an industry, it's a movement that will power the grid, ignite the aspirations of unemployed youth, and pave the way for a brighter future,' he said. He underscored the state's abundant sunlight and clean air, advocating a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy and dismissing the need to seek solutions beyond Earth. The project aligns with Andhra Pradesh's Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy, launched in October 2024 under Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's visionary leadership. Lokesh described the policy as a blueprint for India's green revolution, positioning Andhra Pradesh as a trendsetter. He highlighted the return of ReNew Power, a major investor before 2019, noting, 'Six years later, ReNew has returned stronger, reflecting confidence in our governance.' State Power Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar reinforced this, stating, 'Companies that fled during the previous government are now returning under this people's government, drawn by our investor-friendly policies.'

Piloting India's clean energy revolution with Renew Power: Lokesh

Anantapur: Andhra Pradesh is to set a new benchmark in clean energy following the foundation of Rs 22,000 crore integrated renewable energy complex by Renew Power in Betapalli village, Guntakal constituency in Anantapur district. IT Minister Nara Lokesh laid the foundation stone for the 4.8 GW hybrid project, calling it a 'cornerstone in India's clean energy revolution." Addressing the gathering, Lokesh said, 'This is not just a project – it is a movement. A bridge between our dreams and the future generations. When we have abundant sunlight and clean air, why search for another planet?' Laying stress on sustainability, he said that Andhra Pradesh was making huge strides to become a "cleaner, greener, greater" state, positioning itself as India's 'green powerhouse'. This mega initiative is part of a broader vision that has brought clean energy giants like Tata Power, NTPC, Vedanta Serentica, SAEL Industries, and Brookfield to the state in just eight months. Cumulatively, these projects, involving investments more than Rs 3.5 lakh crore, can develop more than 72 GW of renewable energy by 2029. In Phase 1, Rs 7,000 crore will be invested in 587 MW solar, 250 MW wind and 415 MW battery storage facility. In the final plan, the total will be 1,800 MW solar, one GW wind and 2,000 MW battery storage. This is expected to create 10,000 direct and indirect jobs and energise the local economy. Lokesh highlighted that the Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) policy launched last October is a blueprint for India's green energy roadmap. He lauded Renew Chairman Sumanth Sinha for trusting the state's leadership, saying this partnership symbolises shared values and vision. 'Unlike others who only look at policy, our leader looks at possibilities,' Lokesh said, while attributing the state's progress to the foresight of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. After a five-year stagnation, Andhra Pradesh is witnessing a clean energy revival, he pointed out. He praised Prime Minister Modi's national target of 500 GW renewable energy and acknowledged the Centre's cooperation in restarting development projects in Amaravati. 'When I went to Delhi, I was asked what Andhra Pradesh vis-à-vis Hyderabad, Chennai or Bengaluru. I said we have Brand Chandrababu with us,' Lokesh asserted, stating that this credibility is what draws global companies like Renew and TCS to Andhra Pradesh. He urged all concerned leaders, NREDCAP and district officials to ensure timely execution of the projects. 'We are not just laying concrete we are laying a vision,' he affirmed. Later, Lokesh also announced that a High Court bench will soon be established in Kurnool.

ReNew kicks off work for Rs 22K cr green energy complex in Andhra Pradesh

Green energy major ReNew on Friday marked its re-entry into Andhra Pradesh after six years, with a Rs 22,000 crore investment to develop the country's largest single-site renewable energy complex in Anantapur. The groundbreaking ceremony for the 4.8-gigawatt project (including solar, wind, and battery energy storage) was conducted by state industries minister Nara Lokesh. This comes a day after the State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB) cleared 19 new industrial projects worth Rs 33,720 crore. These investments are expected to generate employment for 34,621 people across key sectors such as energy, tourism, IT, and electronics. Since the new government took charge, SIPB has cleared 76 projects worth Rs 4.95 trillion so far, creating 450,000 jobs. "This is a new era focused on renewable energy, and Andhra Pradesh is key for India's clean energy journey. This is one of the major investments in the state since it came out with an integrated clean energy policy in October 2024, which ensured single-window clearance and restored investor confidence through contract sanctity," said Sumant Sinha, chairman and chief executive officer of ReNew. The project is expected to be completed in the next two years and is likely to create around 8,000–10,000 jobs over a period of five years. ReNew was the largest renewable energy investor in Andhra Pradesh prior to 2019, with 777 MW installed capacity. However, the company suspended further development due to PPA cancellations during the previous administration. Its return signifies a strong vote of confidence in the policy stability and proactive leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Lokesh said. Highlighting the scale and impact of the project, he added, 'The launch of the ReNew Renewable Energy Complex is a symbol of bold ambition and sustainable progress. With an investment of Rs 22,000 crore, this project is not just about empowering grids — it is about energising hope, fuelling ambition, and lighting the way to a cleaner tomorrow.' The combined capacity cumulatively in all phases includes 1,800 MWp solar, 1 GW wind, and 2,000 MWh BESS. This is the first major project under the Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy, introduced by the Andhra Pradesh government in October 2024, offering structured incentives and fast-track approvals for clean energy investments. Reaffirming Andhra Pradesh's leadership in the sector, Lokesh concluded, 'Every megawatt generated here sends a message to the world: India leads from the front, and Andhra Pradesh stands at the helm.' The project aligns with Andhra Pradesh's ambitious target of 72 GW renewable energy capacity by 2029, as announced during RE Invest 2024. The past eight months have seen a wave of clean energy investments from major players like Tata Power (Rs 49,000 crore), NTPC (Rs 1.86 trillion), Vedanta's Serentica (Rs 50,000 crore), Brookfield (Rs 50,000 crore), and SAEL Industries (Rs 6,000 crore).
