ReNew kicks off work for Rs 22K cr green energy complex in Andhra Pradesh
Green energy major ReNew on Friday marked its re-entry into Andhra Pradesh after six years, with a Rs 22,000 crore investment to develop the country's largest single-site renewable energy complex in Anantapur.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the 4.8-gigawatt project (including solar, wind, and battery energy storage) was conducted by state industries minister Nara Lokesh. This comes a day after the State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB) cleared 19 new industrial projects worth Rs 33,720 crore. These investments are expected to generate employment for 34,621 people across key sectors such as energy, tourism, IT, and electronics. Since the new government took charge, SIPB has cleared 76 projects worth Rs 4.95 trillion so far, creating 450,000 jobs.
"This is a new era focused on renewable energy, and Andhra Pradesh is key for India's clean energy journey. This is one of the major investments in the state since it came out with an integrated clean energy policy in October 2024, which ensured single-window clearance and restored investor confidence through contract sanctity," said Sumant Sinha, chairman and chief executive officer of ReNew. The project is expected to be completed in the next two years and is likely to create around 8,000–10,000 jobs over a period of five years.
ReNew was the largest renewable energy investor in Andhra Pradesh prior to 2019, with 777 MW installed capacity. However, the company suspended further development due to PPA cancellations during the previous administration. Its return signifies a strong vote of confidence in the policy stability and proactive leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Lokesh said.
Highlighting the scale and impact of the project, he added, 'The launch of the ReNew Renewable Energy Complex is a symbol of bold ambition and sustainable progress. With an investment of Rs 22,000 crore, this project is not just about empowering grids — it is about energising hope, fuelling ambition, and lighting the way to a cleaner tomorrow.'
The combined capacity cumulatively in all phases includes 1,800 MWp solar, 1 GW wind, and 2,000 MWh BESS. This is the first major project under the Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy, introduced by the Andhra Pradesh government in October 2024, offering structured incentives and fast-track approvals for clean energy investments.
Reaffirming Andhra Pradesh's leadership in the sector, Lokesh concluded, 'Every megawatt generated here sends a message to the world: India leads from the front, and Andhra Pradesh stands at the helm.'
The project aligns with Andhra Pradesh's ambitious target of 72 GW renewable energy capacity by 2029, as announced during RE Invest 2024. The past eight months have seen a wave of clean energy investments from major players like Tata Power (Rs 49,000 crore), NTPC (Rs 1.86 trillion), Vedanta's Serentica (Rs 50,000 crore), Brookfield (Rs 50,000 crore), and SAEL Industries (Rs 6,000 crore).

‘We don't have any compulsion to go for IPO tomorrow'
Bengaluru-based media technology company Amagi, which has initiated an initial public offering (IPO) process recently, is now expanding into Japan, Australia, Latin America, France and Germany. In an interaction with Uma Kannan, Baskar Subramanian, CEO & Co-Founder of Amagi, says they are seeing a tremendous opportunity in front of them for the next 10 years where they can build extremely large media tech company in the world and that they don't have any compulsion to go public tomorrow. The company's annual revenue in FY24 stood at Rs 942 crore. Edited excerpts: You are a media SaaS unicorn and have been in the business for over 15 years now. What does the market look like? Our customers are TV channels, content creators, live producers, sports news, and anybody who is creating content in the mid-tier to large enterprises. We don't work with the creator economy and influencer economy today; we don't have any product portfolio for it, but we work with the larger mid to enterprise sort of customers. Fundamentally, the world is becoming streaming, and all of us are only watching on IP, internet devices, be it on our phone or connected television, what we call smart TV in India. This has changed things for our customers. One, it's fragmentation of viewership. In the early days of cable, you could go to one channel and always watch the content. Now there are so many places where people are consuming content, be it YouTube, Netflix, Prime, social platforms, connected TV devices to everywhere else and this is becoming a big challenge for the broadcasters and TV channels. This is very similar to what happened in the retail industry. Suddenly people are buying in supermarkets, e-commerce stores and now quick commerce. TV is now connected in every home in India. How are you looking at the Indian market? In India, we have clients, and the country has obviously dramatically changed, given 5G connections. Here we work with Samsung, whose many channels are coming to Samsung TV Plus with the back-end being Amagi. We work with the likes of Republic TV, Times Now and Zee television and provide OTT content. India is a growing market and we have now started to expand but the country is only very close to about a percentage (1%) of our revenue. So, we continue to have a big focus on the international markets with 70% revenue coming from the US. However, we are seeing India as a growing market and it will start to become bigger and bigger for us as we go forward. What are the market opportunities that you are seeing, and whether you have competitors in India as well as outside? We started in the US, expanded into Europe, and then in Asia, we started in Singapore. We are now expanding into Japan, Australia, Latin America, France, and Germany. It's a global market and we are seeing a tremendous opportunity in front of us for the next 10 years where we can build an extremely large, world-class media tech company in the world. Amagi's competition is all traditional hardware players. And we are the only company in the world that talks about a glass-to-glass complete end solution. It is reported that you are looking to raise Rs 3,200 crore through a public listing. Are you planning to hit an IPO soon? If we go for an IPO, we'll go in India. Going through the process, understanding and evaluating markets are very different. We don't know when we do it because timing matters in this industry. As a company, we don't have any compulsion to go for an IPO tomorrow. We are a profitable company, we have money in the bank and we have investors who came in 2022. So, the idea is that eventually we will have to be a public company. If the market is really good, then maybe by the end of the year (we will go for the IPO), or else next year.

B'luru stampede: Somanna slams govt, defends suspended top cop
Mysuru: Union minister of state for railways V Somanna on Sunday said even an entire year's state budget cannot compensate for the tragic loss of lives in the stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium. His remarks came in response to questions from the media regarding the Karnataka govt's revised compensation of Rs 25 lakh per victim, up from the initial Rs 10 lakh. "Even the amount of one full year's state budget cannot compensate for the lives lost in the stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium," Somanna said. "Royal Challengers Bengaluru reached the IPL finals after 18 years, and the authorities should have planned accordingly. Unfortunately, the chief minister mishandled the situation. Perhaps, he acted on poor advice from his associates," he added. The minister also criticised the suspension of Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda, calling it unjust. "I've known the work of IPS officer Dayananda for many years. His suspension is unfair, especially when he had no direct role in the stampede.
