FM Sitharaman interacts with students, staff of Ramakrishna Mission Ashram school in Meghalaya
New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday visited the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram School in Sohra, Meghalaya, and interacted warmly with the students, teachers and staff members, highlighting the government's continued engagement with educational and livelihood initiatives in the North Eastern region. During her visit, FM Sitharaman explored various facilities at the school, including the Tailoring and Weaving Centre that operates under the Swavalamban Alternative Livelihood Unit for the East (SALUTE) initiative. She appreciated the efforts being made to provide skill-based training and alternative livelihood opportunities through such centres. The Finance Minister was accompanied by Swami Anuragananda, Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission. Together, they toured the campus and spoke to the school community, acknowledging the positive role of the institution in the region's development. One of the most touching moments of the visit was her interaction with 90-year-old Kong Lolin Lyndem, who had both studied and taught at the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram School. FM Sitharaman shared a few words with her, appreciating her long association and contribution to the school. Meanwhile, Meghalaya marked a significant milestone in its development journey on Friday as Union Finance Minister Sitharaman inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple key projects worth Rs 1,087.81 crore in the state. Speaking at the Integrated Public Programme held at LARITI – International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture earlier this week, FM Sitharaman praised Meghalaya's steady progress and visionary leadership under Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. Highlighting the Centre's support, the Finance Minister said that Meghalaya has been allocated a total of Rs 5,400 crore under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme. Commending the effective use of funds, she remarked, "I am happy that the government has used the amount effectively for capital assets. I want to place on record my appreciation for Meghalaya's efforts. The funds are being fully utilised. Some states have struggled to use their entire share, but Meghalaya has made the most of its allocation."

"I am happy that the govt has used the amount effectively for capital assets. I will put on record my appreciation of Meghalaya's efforts- the funds are being fully utilised. Some states are not able to utilise their share in full; here we have Meghalaya, using its quota entirely," Sitharaman said in the presence of the CM. She stated that the Union govt looks at the northeast as a region to empower, act, strengthen and transform and highlighted the construction of over 540 km of roads in Meghalaya, a five-fold increase in optical fibre coverage, since 2014. Sitharaman lauded the state for its performances in schemes like Jal Jeevan Mission, PM Awas Yojana, PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Swachh Bharat Mission and others. "The total money which has been given to Meghalaya since 2021 till today is 5,400 crores," she said and expressed her happiness in the way state has utilised the amount in building capital assets. Sitharaman invoked the eternal ethos of the Khasi community. "Kamai ia ka Hok (earn righteousness), Tipkur Tipkha (respect for one's roots), and Tip Briew Tip Blei (know man, know God) — these principles should inspire governance across India," she said. Expressing his gratitude to the Union govt for its continued support to Meghalaya, CM Sangma said, "The hon'ble Union finance minister's visit is important, not only for official programmes but also to connect with the citizens of the state; to understand first-hand the problems we face, and to provide necessary guidance and solutions for the way forward." H e mentioned about Meghalaya's goal of becoming an USD 10 billion-dollar economy and pointed out that Meghalaya is now close to becoming a $6-billion economy, with a growth rate nearing 15%, significantly higher than the national average. He informed the FM that Meghalaya has successfully leveraged a large number of schemes through Externally Aided Projects, which serve as a major source of funding for smaller states. These initiatives have enabled the state to implement a wide array of developmental projects, with total funding nearing Rs 12,000 crore, contributing significantly to the state's overall growth. Dignitaries also released the 'PRIME Impact Report, Meghalaya on the Move: Achievements over 7 Years', highlighting the state's achievements in governance, innovation, and enterprise across sectors. Key projects launched today included 75 digital libraries in remote areas (Rs 162 cr, SASCI).

He informed the Union Finance Minister that Meghalaya has successfully leveraged many schemes and projects through Externally Aided Projects (EAPs), which serve as a major source of funding for smaller states. These initiatives have enabled the state to implement a wide array of developmental projects, with total funding nearing Rs 12,000 crore, contributing significantly to the state's overall growth. Dignitaries also released the PRIME Impact Report, Meghalaya on the Move: Achievements Over 7 Years, highlighting the state's achievements in governance, innovation, and enterprise across sectors. A cheque distribution ceremony was also held during the event, benefiting recipients under schemes like PM MUDRA, PM SVANidhi, PMEGP, and NPS Vatsalya, reaffirming the Government's commitment to grassroots financial inclusion. Entrepreneurs received the cheques from the Finance Minister and Chief Minister and are all set to start and expand their entrepreneurial ventures ranging from cultivation, bakery, printing & stationery, cafe, homestays, among many. In a significant boost to Meghalaya's organic farming sector, Sitharaman flagged off a 2-metric-tonne consignment of premium organic pineapples to LULU Retail, Dubai, under the IFAD-supported Megha-LAMP initiative. Sourced from farmers of the Jirang Organics Farmer Producer Company in Ri-Bhoi, this consignment underscores Meghalaya's emergence as a key player in the global horticultural value chain.
