Inter set to appoint former player Chivu as manager to replace Inzaghi
Inter Milan will appoint their former player and youth coach Cristian Chivu as manager to replace the recently departed Simone Inzaghi once details are worked out with his current club Parma, Inter president Giuseppe Marotta said on Friday. Inzaghi left Inter on Tuesday, four years to the day since his appointment and three days after his side suffered a 5-0 defeat to Paris St Germain in the Champions League final to end the season trophyless, and was named coach of Al-Hilal a day later. Italian media reports had already named Chivu as the new manager with the 44-year-old Romanian set to sign a two-year contract, and Marotta, speaking at the Serie A Festival, all but confirmed the news. "To win, money alone is not enough, expertise, planning, experience, and many other qualities are needed," Marotta said. "All these qualities are what we believe to have, for example in the case of Chivu. I'm saying this because I cannot give official confirmation as there is a bureaucratic aspect we need to overcome with Parma." While Inzaghi arrived at Inter after being in charge of Lazio for five full seasons, winning a Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups with the Rome-based team, the club are now putting their faith in a coach with very little coaching experience at this level. Chivu spent seven seasons as a defender at Inter, ending his playing career at the club in 2014 and was part of Jose Mourinho's treble-winning side of 2010. He returned to Inter in 2018, taking charge of underage teams and moving up through the ranks to manage the youth team where he won the league title in his first season in charge in 2022. Chivu left Inter at the end of the 2023-24 season, and in February this year he took on his first senior managerial role when he was named Parma manager to replace Fabio Pecchia with the club in the Serie A relegation zone. Parma had lost five of their last six games under Pecchia, while Chivu suffered just three defeats in his 13 matches in charge, securing the club's survival with a win at Atalanta on the final day of the season. Chivu has little time to settle in with the Club World Cup fast approaching where Inter begin the tournament on June 17 when they take on Mexicos' Monterrey in Los Angeles followed by two games in Seattle against Urawa Red Diamonds and River Plate.

Coach Inzaghi to leave Inter Milan: club
ROME: Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi is leaving after four years by 'mutual agreement,' the club announced on Tuesday, as Italian media reported he was moving to Saudi Arabia. 'The club and Simone Inzaghi are parting ways. This is the decision taken by mutual agreement,' Inter said in a statement. Both Inter and Inzaghi said the decision had been made at a meeting involving the coach and club President Giuseppe Marotta on Tuesday afternoon. The parting came just days after Saturday's 5-0 thumping by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. According to renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Inzaghi's next job could be with Saudi club Al-Hilal, as he suggested a deal was in place for the next three years. Simone Inzaghi will earn €26m net per season as salary in Saudi Pro League as new Al Hilal head coach. The contract will be initially valid until June 2027. — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) June 3, 2025 Meanwhile AFP report added that talks had already been swirling about his exit, and last month Inzaghi played down rumors about a two-year deal with Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal worth 50 million euros. Italian media said Tuesday this reported had been confirmed. According to Romano, Inzaghi could earn up to €26 million ($29.5 million) per season in the Saudi Pro League as new Al-Hilal head coach, adding in a post on X that any contract would be 'initially valid until June 2027.' Inzaghi took over Inter in 2021 and had a contract until 2026. The 49-year-old guided the club to one Serie A title — Inter's 20th — and two Italian Cups. He led the team to two Champions League finals in the past three seasons but lost both. On track to repeat the treble heroics of 2010 just a few weeks ago, Inter ended the season trophyless after falling away in each competition. In its statement, the club said Inzaghi's management was 'characterised by great passion, accompanied by professionalism and dedication.' His trophies had 'brought the club back to the top of Italian and European football,' it said. Marotta thanked him 'for the work done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today's discussion, which led to the common decision to separate our paths.' 'Only when we have fought together to achieve success day by day, can we have a frank dialogue like the one that happened today,' he said. In a separate statement, Inzaghi thanked the players, managers and staff, but most of all the fans, adding: 'I will never forget you.' * With AFP

Desperate Inter Milan supporters beg stewards to let them back into San Siro after leaving Champions League classic against Barcelona at 3-2 down - as fans declare it 'serves them right'
Desperate Inter Milan fans were left pleading to get back into San Siro after leaving early before the Italian side reached the Champions League final in an extraordinary tie against Barcelona. Davide Frattesi scored an extra time winner to give Inter a 4-3 victory on the night over Barcelona in an all-time classic. The hosts went two goals up in the first half thanks to Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Çalhanoğlu but Barcelona appeared to have completed a remarkable turnaround with Eric García and Dani Olmo on the scoresheet before Raphinha gave the Catalans the lead in the 87th minute. With only two minutes of stoppage time remaining, 37-year-old centre-back Francesco Acerbi dramatically smashed the ball into the roof of the net to take the tie to extra time and see San Siro erupt. But a number of unlucky Inter fans had already raced out of the stadium and were forced to beg stewards to allow them to return with little success. A video posted by TNT Sports on X shows a small group of fans hopelessly pleading with a steward outside the 80,000 seat stadium. — TNT Sports BR (@TNTSportsBR) May 6, 2025 The unfortunate Inter fans missed a tense end to a spectacular semi-final which saw Simone Inzhagi's side reach the Champions League final for the second time in three seasons. Nine minutes into extra time Fratessi sparked euphoric scenes by curling a left-footed shot into the bottom corner and climbing up a security fence to celebrate in front of the home support. Lamine Yamal was then denied twice by Yann Sommer as the Italians held out to keep the score at 7-6 on aggregate and to reach the final in Munich. Fans took to social media to berate Inter supporters for leaving early. One said: 'Missing one of the greatest games in history, no real fan would walk out at that point.' Another added: 'Serves them right! Jog on home and miss one of the greatest games in your clubs history.' Fans on social media were quick to berate the unlucky Inter Milan supporters who left early 'No sympathy, don't let them in they deserve the consequences,' another said. The semi-final was the joint-highest ever in Champions League history, level with Liverpool's 7-6 victory over Roma in 2018. Inter lost to Manchester City in the final two years ago and will play Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain at the Allianz Arena on May 31. The Gunners go into this semi-final second leg on the back of last week's 1-0 loss with a final shot to salvage their season.
