UN Secretary-General Meets Arab League Chief Amid Gaza Crisis, Peace Talks

Mohamed Mandour United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres met Monday with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on the sidelines of the high-level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question, currently underway at the UN headquarters in New York from July 28 to 30. According to Jamal Rushdi, spokesperson for the Arab League chief, the meeting included delegations from both organizations and focused heavily on the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Both leaders expressed grave concern over what they described as a continuing campaign of extermination being carried out by Israel against civilians in the Gaza Strip. Aboul Gheit and Guterres emphasized the critical importance of the ongoing conference in reaffirming the viability of the two-state solution and establishing a credible path toward ending the occupation and realizing Palestinian statehood. The two also reviewed broader regional developments, including the deteriorating situations in Sudan, Libya, and Syria, as well as recent developments concerning Iran's nuclear file.
