Speaker highlights parliament's role in democracy
ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq emphasised the vital role of parliaments in sustaining democracy, asserting that parliamentary supremacy is essential for the stability of democratic systems. The Speaker in his message on the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism said that that a functional, transparent, and effective parliament serves as a true voice of the people and plays a pivotal role in strengthening democratic institutions. Highlighting Pakistan's engagement on the global stage, He said the National Assembly remains an active and dynamic member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), contributing positively to the promotion of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law worldwide. He stressed that fostering public participation, transparency, and accountability is indispensable for building a vibrant and responsive parliamentary system. The Speaker reaffirmed the National Assembly's commitment to safeguarding parliamentary autonomy and promoting democratic values, legal order, and fundamental human rights across the country. He further stated that Pakistan's parliament would continue to work closely with the IPU towards the achievement of global peace, democracy, and sustainable development goals. ISLAMABAD: On the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism, Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has paid rich tribute to the democratic aspirations of the people of Pakistan and reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the supremacy of Parliament as the true voice of the nation. In a statement issued by the Media Cell Bilawal House, Chairman PPP said that Parliament is not merely a structure of bricks and stone—it is the embodiment of the people's will, the sanctuary of their hopes, and the guardian of their freedoms. 'Each elected voice in Parliament echoes the struggle and sacrifices of our people—especially the countless martyrs of democracy, including Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto,' he said. Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that strong, independent, and inclusive Parliaments are essential for peace, justice, and sustainable development. 'We must never allow anyone to undermine the sanctity of the legislature. The history of Pakistan has taught us that every time Parliament is weakened, the people suffer. Every time it is silenced, the nation pays a heavy price,' he warned. Chairman PPP called upon all democratic forces to unite in defending parliamentary traditions and in restoring Parliament to its rightful place at the heart of national decision-making. 'As a young democrat, I see Parliament as the place where dreams of equality, justice, and dignity for every Pakistani can be shaped into law,' he added. PM calls to strengthen democratic institutions
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged the nation to renew its resolve to strengthen parliamentary institutions, uphold democratic values, and ensure that the voices of the people are truly reflected in the lawmaking process. In a message on the International Day of Parliamentarism, he said, "The day is observed every year on June 30 to reaffirm our global commitment to reinforcing democratic institutions." "The day also celebrates the vital role of Parliaments in promoting inclusive governance, ensuring meaningful representation of women and youth, and embracing technological innovation in legislative practices," he said. The PM noted, "Our Parliament occupies a central place in our democratic framework. Through its legislative authority and the vigilant work of its standing committees, Parliament ensures accountability, transparency, and oversight of the executive." "The Constitution of Pakistan enshrines representation of women through reserved seats under Articles 51 and 59. Our women parliamentarians have also risen to leadership positions: currently, eight women Senators and four women Members of the National Assembly serve as Chairpersons of Parliamentary Committees, breaking glass ceilings and setting an example of inclusive and empowered leadership," he remarked. The prime minister said, "Parliament has also remained proactive in enacting progressive legislation, particularly to advance gender equality and social protection." He said, "As we mark this important day, let us renew our resolve to strengthen parliamentary institutions, safeguard democratic values, and ensure that the voices of the citizenry are truly reflected in the lawmaking process." Chaudhry Nisar Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the residence of disgruntled PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and inquired after his health. According to a statement issued by the PM House, both leaders discussed national and international issues. The meeting was held in a very pleasant atmosphere, and they relived their past memories.
