Mara to enhance collaboration with Cambridge University
LONDON: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) will be enhancing its collaboration with Cambridge University, says Datuk Dr Ashraf Wadi Dusuki. The Mara chairman said he had a discussion with the university's representatives, who were told 12 Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) taught the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) syllabus. "Student performance was very encouraging, with 147 scoring straight As. "We (Mara) also have a comprehensive educational ecosystem. "They (Cambridge representatives) were very excited when we shared these facts. "Our focus is not only sending students overseas but to ensure a path for them to enter Ivy League universities," he told reporters in London on Sunday (June 1). Ashraf Wadi is in London as part of the delegation for Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's working visit to Britain. He said Cambridge representatives have also agreed to go to MRSM to give students a taste of the Cambridge orientation. "In that sense, students can be prepared early," he said. Mara has also agreed to conduct joint research and co-funding with Cambridge in areas such as quantum technology and artificial intelligence, said Ashraf Wadi. "For example, we will send five lecturers for master's and doctorate courses in Cambridge and the university will sponsor another five," he said. He added that Mara has also agreed to conduct leadership professional courses to produce professors and lecturers for academia and also for industries. "The training module will be developed by Cambridge and will take one month," he said. On another matter, Ashraf Wadi said three top universities in the United Kingdom have agreed to offer discounts on tuition fees for Mara-sponsored students, namely Warwick University, Birmingham University and Edinburgh University. "Both Warwick University and Birmingham University have agreed to offer a 20% discount on tuition fees and Edinburgh University offered 10%. He said this could save Mara about RM103,000 per student over the span of three years. He added that with the savings, Mara could look into increasing allowances. "I met with students in Sheffield and Manchester and the feedback that I got is that their cost of living has increased significantly," he said.

Pune students excel in IGCSE and A level exams
Pune: Students of schools affiliated to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE – Class X), AS Level (Class XI) and A Level (Class XII) in the Cambridge International Education Board Exams 2024-25 have produced meritorious results. In IGCSE, an A* grade means a percentage ranging from 90-100 and an A grade means 80-89%. In AS Level, an A grade means 80-100%. Over 17,000 students from 420 schools from across the country wrote the exams in the March series. The exam series saw nearly 85,000 entries — the largest-ever March series held in India, marking an 11% increase from the previous year. Cambridge IGCSE witnessed a 12% jump from last year, with over 62,000 entries. Cambridge International AS & A Levels saw an increase of 10% with over 20,000 entries. Over 800 schools from across India offer the Cambridge international curriculum, which is taught in over 10,000 schools in 160 countries. Vinay Sharma, senior vice-president, International Education at Cambridge, said, "We extend our sincere congratulations to all learners in India receiving their March exam results. The results are a testament to their diligence and the commitment of their educators, parents and schools." The most popular subjects for both Cambridge IGCSE and International AS & A Levels remained mathematics, physics and chemistry. Cambridge IGCSE biology is experiencing a surge in popularity, with entries up by 16% compared to last year. Students from VIBGYOR campuses demonstrated academic excellence across disciplines, with numerous A* and A grades and subject distinctions. Aditya Aina was the topper from the NIBM campus for IGCSE and scored eight A* grades, equivalent to 93.6%. "I did a lot of self-revision, practised papers and reviewed my notes. The English papers were the most difficult. I plan to take up science for the next two years," said Aditya. "Aditya was consistent through the year and did not take too many external classes. He balanced his studies with other co-curricular activities like the Model United Nations. His father has been battling cancer since last year. Despite this, Aditya scored well," said his mother, Bhairavi Aina. Some other students from VIBGYOR High (NIBM) who scored well included Rachit Shrivastava, who scored 91.9% with seven As, and Zunairah Ahamadi, who scored 89.1% with six As. In Class XII, Vedant Bhat scored 91.7% with three A*s, Siddh Gandhi scored 90.3% with two A*s and Yamuna Seth scored 89.3% with two A*s. I will be studying data science and statistics in the future," said Vedant. Billabong High International School in Amanora also secured 100% results in IGCSE. Forty per cent of the students scored 90% and above. Ayan Atmakuri topped with 92% and secured A* in physics, chemistry, maths and computer science. YSISS students surpass international average in Cambridge exams
State Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee speaking to reporters at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly media room on Tuesday (May 20). KUCHING: Students at Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) scored above the international average in the Year Nine Cambridge checkpoint exams, says Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee. The state Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister said 99 students from YSISS Petra Jaya took the exam last year in English, Mathematics, and Science. YSISS students achieved an average score of 32 in English and 39 in both Mathematics and Science, exceeding the international averages of 25 for English and 31 for Mathematics and Science. "The results are very good. Through this exam, we can gauge our standards compared to international students," he said at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (May 20). The Cambridge checkpoint grading scale ranges from 0 to 50, with performance bands from basic (1-10) to outstanding (41-50). Year Nine is equivalent to Form Three. Dr Annuar then added to his earlier response to Iskandar Turkee (GPS-Jepak), who had asked about YSISS students' achievements in the Cambridge exam. In addition to overall scores, students were graded on various topics in each subject, including biology, chemistry, and physics in Science, and algebra and geometry in Mathematics. "Our students also scored above the international average for each topic. Again, this is very good," he said. In response to Iskandar earlier, Dr Annuar said the state government plans to build a new YSISS in Bintulu, in the Jepak new township area. The school will use the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) syllabus to ensure education quality. "The effectiveness of teaching and learning will be assessed periodically through a monitoring and feedback mechanism based on Cambridge University's standards," he added. Currently, there are three Yayasan Sarawak international secondary schools in the state, located in Petra Jaya, 12th Mile Kuching-Serian Road, and Sibu.
