Labuan Students Make Island Proud With World-Topping IGCSE Maths Scores

LABUAN, May 29 (Bernama) -- Labuan students have made the island proud as two of its achievers, Sharaneshri Saravanan and Nicole Chia Xin Dong earned the 'Top in the World' title for International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Mathematics in the Nov 2024 exam series, each securing a flawless 100 percent score.
The two high achievers are students of Labuan International School (LIS), with Nicole having been part of the school since primary level, while Sharaneshri began her academic journey there in Kindergarten.
The awards ceremony took place today at Sunway University, Selangor, where the honours were presented by Kanjna Paranthaman, Country Regional Director for Southeast Asia and Pacific, International Education, Cambridge University Press & Assessment.
LIS principle Fadlin Aimuni said their exceptional performance not only highlights individual excellence but also underscores the school's strong academic foundation.
'The prestigious award is conferred by Cambridge Assessment International Education to students who achieve the highest standard mark globally in a single subject.
'Both students are exemplary role models, excelling not only in academics but also in sports, music, and debate, actively representing LIS in various competitions.
'Their achievements reflect the school's holistic approach to education that nurtures excellence across mind, body, and character,' she told Bernama today.
She said this record-setting milestone has set a new standard of achievement for LIS and serves as a powerful inspiration to the next generation of learners in Labuan.
'This is more than just a top academic result, it's a moment of pride for the whole LIS community. Our students have proven that with dedication, support, and balance, it's possible to achieve excellence in every area,' Fadlin said.

The Bioactive Antimicrobial Material Enriched with Citrus Extract for Sustainable Applications (BioCitrusProtect) project, which also won the Best Green Invention award, combines chitosan, bacterial cellulose, and naringin extracted from citrus to create a natural and effective solution for inhibiting harmful microorganisms, with potential applications in food packaging and coatings. Other projects that won gold medals included QUANTUMLFA: Revolutionising Hepatitis B Detection, a rapid test kit for detecting Hepatitis B surface antigen, and Sustainable Innovation: Biodegradable Microbeads from Pineapple Fibre, a sustainable scientific solution designed to replace plastic microbeads in skincare and personal care products. Other gold award recipients include the Digitalisation of Clear Aligners Production Through Direct 3D Printing project, which introduced a fully digital workflow for producing clear braces, and REP4WRD®: Agile Best Practices for Industry, a framework designed to help organisations effectively implement Agile methodologies.
