Your Stories Q&A: What's with all the dirt near I-690 and Bear Street in Syracuse?
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – You ask, we answer! Question: What are crews doing with the large mounds of dirt off I-690 near Bear Street? If you drive on I-690 near the Inner Harbor and not far from Destiny USA, you will likely notice large mounds of dirt being dumped in the median between I-690 eastbound and westbound at Bear Street. While the work is happening on 690, it's actually related to the I-81 Viaduct Project. 'As part of contract three of the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project, soil that has been excavated from the Inner Harbor area is being repurposed for use in other areas of the project, including to enhance the median between Interstate 690 eastbound and westbound and the Bear Street off-ramp from I-690 eastbound,' said NYSDOT spokesperson, TeNesha Murphy. According to the I-81 Viaduct Project website, contract 3 calls for a large portion of W Bear Street to be reconstructed with sidewalks, bike and pedestrian paths, a connection to the Empire State Trail and the road to be resurfaced. West Bear Street to the on-ramp to I-690 will be widened and extended. The NYSDOT said this will improve safety by helping traffic merge onto the interstate. Contract 3 also calls for Spencer Street leading to the I-690 on-ramp to be widened. This is near the popular The Gem Diner. Construction on Phase 3 is expected to be completed by the end of this year, according to the I-81 Viaduct Project's website. Submit a form.
