Major construction project on I-90 starts Monday
CUYAHOGA COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) – A years-long rehabilitation project to completely re-do a portion of Interstate 90 west of Cleveland will begin on Monday. A stretch between Hilliard and West Boulevards near Rocky River and Lakewood will undergo a complete overhaul of the pavement from the ground up, according to ODOT. I-TEAM: Why were Lorain officers shot? Still not clear The plan also includes a new concrete median, new street lights, and improved drainage in an area that has had flash flooding in the past. On Monday, contractors will begin adding temporary pavement to be able to divert traffic. By Friday, both the eastbound and westbound lanes will be shifted toward the outer shoulders. That new traffic pattern will stick around until next spring, Brent Kovacs said. Kovacs, the public information officer for ODOT's 12th district, added that this portion of the road was put in in the 1960s and 70s. 'The thing motorists may not understand is that the surface may look smooth that they drive on, but it's really the base material that is starting to fail and that we need to replace,' he said. 'It has well exceeded its lifespan, and once this project is done, it'll be decades and decades until we have to come back and do something here.' Families of officers hold lemonade stand for Lorain police after deadly attack Lane restrictions and ramp closures are expected throughout the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed by the fall of 2028. 'Please slow down. Follow the posted speed limit and give more space to the vehicles around you and going through these construction zones,' Kovacs said. He also suggested allowing more time for your commute in the early part of the project as drivers adjust to the shifted traffic pattern. Drivers can keep up with real-time traffic updates by using ODOT's OHGO app. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Motorist rescued by strangers after car rolls into Mississippi River at Dresbach rest area
Jun. 30—DRESBACH, Minn. — A man was rescued by strangers after his vehicle rolled into the Mississippi River off Interstate 90 between Dakota and La Crescent on Monday, June 30, 2025. The man had a medical emergency while traveling on Interstate 90 and he pulled into the Dresbach rest area where he lost control of the vehicle, according to a Facebook post from the Winona County Sheriff's Office. He traveled down a steep embankment and landed in the Mississippi River. While on a cross-country camper trip, Brittany Pashkow and Dustin Colson-Leaning were parked near the Dresbach rest area and saw the vehicle roll down into the river. Pashkow called 911 and Colson-Leaning jumped into action to help the motorist who was semi-conscious in the vehicle. The vehicle was submerging into the river and Colson-Leaning was able to pull the driver's door open to free the motorist. He then assisted the motorist to shore to receive medical care. "I'd like to thank them for being in the right place at the right time AND taking immediate action," Winona County Sheriff Ron Ganrude said in an email. The vehicle was completely submerged by the time law enforcement arrived on scene, the post said. The motorist was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. "Without the quick actions of Brittany and Dustin, the end result would have been a lot different," the sheriff's office wrote in the post. "We wish them safe travels as they make their way back to Massachusetts, and we want to applaud them for their life saving efforts."

Semi carrying whiskey tips over on I-90
A semi-truck carrying whiskey tipped over on Interstate 90 Friday morning. Washington State Patrol says speed was a factor. It happened in the eastbound lanes near milepost 45. No one was hurt. One lane is currently open to get around the crash, but drivers should expect delays for the time being. State patrol posted a picture showing the crates of whiskey strapped in, saying, 'Hoping it survives when the trailer is rolled back over.' No word when all lanes will be back open.

These speed cameras raise awareness, but do not issue tickets
This speed camera flashes motorists exceeding the speed limit without ticketing them. (WSDOT pic) PARIS : Since April, the US State of Washington has been testing a novel system of 'educational' speed cameras on some of its highways, namely Interstate 5 in Skagit County and Interstate 90 near Liberty Lake. What makes these speed cameras unique is that motorists who get flashed exceeding the speed limit are not ticketed. Instead, they receive a letter informing them of the offense they have committed and the potential cost of a fine they would have had to pay, ranging from US$135 to US$432. Moreover, these offenses are neither recorded nor passed on to insurance companies. The locations of these first two speed cameras were not chosen at random, but based on accident data, targeting areas where speed has already been a major factor in serious or fatal collisions. In just a few weeks, over 8,000 drivers have already received this type of warning letter. This pilot programme is being implemented by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Its aim is to make drivers aware of the dangers of excessive speed and encourage safer behaviour on the roads. Indeed, speeding is often the cause of tragic accidents. In 2023, the state recorded 810 deaths on the roads, and there were 358 fatal or serious injury crashes where speeding was cited as a factor on state-run highways. The programme is due to run until the end of June 2025, at which point WSDOT will analyse the data collected and public feedback to decide whether it should be continued. At the same time, Washington State is increasing the number of speed cameras in active road construction work zones. Fines of up to US$248 for repeated violations are levied there, after an initial 'warning' incurring no charge.
