Farming God's Way course promotes food security at All Souls

Farming God's Way course promotes food security at All Souls Sixty-eight budding farmers have taken a major step toward food security after completing the five-day Farming God's Way (FGW) course. Hosted last week at All Souls Anglican Church in Sheffield, the course aimed to equip first-time farmers with the skills to sustain themselves and their families. Both theoretical and practical training were delivered by FGW senior trainer Daniel Wiens of Inundo Development, in collaboration with All Souls farm manager Denis Fortune. 'This training is to empower people to grow high-quality food with high yield at a low input cost,' said Wiens. 'This year, we ensured full translation into isiZulu during training, while also incorporating performance to help communicate the message. It's been a huge success.' Fortune, who has been involved in all previous FGW courses held at All Souls, agreed. 'This was the highest calibre of participants I have seen so far. Everyone was ready to get involved and learn,' he said. 'The goal of FGW is to train anyone to maintain a 2×1 farm plot, which should be enough to sustain themselves and even allow for surplus produce to sell. Hopefully, some entrepreneurs will emerge.' The FGW course is structured around 16 core 'keys', divided into biblical, management and technology principles. The biblical and management keys cover connection with God's word and personal management skills, while the technology keys speak to practical agricultural lessons. True to its philosophy, FGW promotes sustainable, low-cost and chemical-free farming. Participants learn methods like crop rotation, no-till farming and the use of natural by-products such as mulch, referred to as 'God's blanket' – a 2.5cm organic layer that fertilises and protects the soil. With a bit of land, seeds and some know-how, food should be abundant for anyone willing to work for it.
