Gosford, Inverell previews: Adam Duggan hoping for a Divine result in the wet
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Trainer Adam Duggan had a nice opinion of Divine Bene in his early trackwork and trials but a couple of unflattering runs to start his career put that into question. It wasn't until Divine Bene got onto a wet track that he started to perform to a higher level and placed in three consecutive runs as he built into his first campaign. 'He is a horse I had a bit of time for early days but didn't show a lot in his first couple of runs,' said Duggan. 'Once we got him going with a couple of runs under his belt, we worked out he didn't have much of a turn of foot but he could sustain the same speed throughout. 'We also found he had a real liking for wet track. I don't think I've had a horse who has had so many runs on a wet track.' Divine Bene has raced on wet ground in eight of the 10 career starts with seven of them on heavy where he has a win and four minor placings. He returned this campaign with a nice win first-up over 1550m on the Beaumont before a third to Lutetia at Newcastle both on Heavy 8 tracks before a second to Sirius Flyer in a Soft 5 at Quirindi last start. 'It probably wasn't wet enough for him at Quirindi the other day,' he said. The four-year-old gets his preferred conditions when steps out in the Class 1 Handicap (1200m). 'I'm happy to have Ash Morgan back on. He rode him really well to win first-up,' Duggan said. 'He's also in at Inverell. I'll discuss it with his owners but Gosford is my preferred option.' Duggan also has Purple Haze entered for the Super Maiden Handicap (1200m) on his home track. The gelding battled away for third to Yes Siree on a Heavy 10 at Wyong on debut on May 1. 'He has been a real work in progress,' said Duggan. 'He was aided by a fair few scratchings in a fairly soft race on debut if I'm being honest but in saying that, I would be surprised if he doesn't improve. 'I think the 1200m will suit him better and eventually a bit further than that.' Warwick Farm trainer Clarry Conners has been pleased with the way Okami Star has raced this campaign and gives him a change of securing another win in the Class 1 Handicap (1600m). The gelding resumed with a second to Pelosa at Hawkesbury followed by a fifth at Kembla before breaking through with a narrow win from Murphilly at Wyong. Last start, he boxed on a long neck fourth to Ocean One at Hawkesbury. 'He has come back a nice horse this time in,' said Conners. 'At Hawkesbury last start, he went around and got to the front then just eased up on him. 'He's a big striding horse and it would have been better if he kept going on him. 'I'm happy with the horse though.' Conners also feels Proclivity can bounce back from a luckless run last start when he contests the 2&3YO Maiden Handicap (1600m). After a debut second to Caltsar at Newcastle, the gelding finished sixth to Monte Veebee at Kembla. 'It was a good run at Newcastle on debut then at Kembla everything went wrong. He got knocked down and pushed back,' he said. 'Aaron Bullock rode him in his first start and was impressed with the horse. 'I'm very happy to be able to get him again this week. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ A slow start and untimely bump put paid to the chances of Angels Cloud last start but trainer Marc Quinn couldn't be happier with his mare and expects her to break through for a well-earned win when she heads to Inverell. Angels Cloud started a $1.90 favourite at Glen Innes earlier this month following three handy placings since joining Quinn's stable. Unfortunately, she was put out of business in the first couple of strides when she settled further back than expected on her way to finishing second behind Immortal Lass. 'I really thought she would have won at Glen Innes the other day but she took a backwards step when the gates opened and Cody's (Morgan) horse got a march on us and that was the end of the race for her,' said Quinn. 'She has had a good couple of weeks since then. 'Obviously last week was a bit of a washout for us. We missed trackwork for a couple of days but they are not going to lose much fitness going on the walker for a couple of days. 'Despite the weather, the horses coped with it really well and she had a lovely gallop on Saturday.' Angels Cloud has drawn ideally on barrier 4 in the Country Boosted Maiden Plate (1100m) with Matthew McGuren to again partner her. 'She has drawn well and Matthew decided to stick with her which is good,' he said. 'All she needs to do is step away and I think she will be hard to beat. Quinn is weighing up his options for Perhaps Perhaps in the Class 1 and Maiden Plate (1800m) but expects her to run a much improved race if she does start. The four-year-old debuted for Quinn with a handy fifth to Justifiably at Port Macquarie on April 19 before backing up on a heavy track there eight days later when down the order behind Imarealamerican over 1500m. She then finished a somewhat unlucky fifth to Visualise over 1400m at Glen Innes. 'Her first run for us was really good and we thought we would try and rider her handier second-up but I don't think she appreciated that and the quick back-up,' he said. 'We didn't want to come back in distance but there wasn't a lot of options for her after so we took her to Glen Innes. 'I thought the run was passable and the step up to 1800m suits her quite well.'

Shayne O'Cass' best bets, inside mail for Inverell on Friday, May 23, 2025
Racenet and The Daily Telegraph form analyst Shayne O'Cass provides his best bets and race-by-race analysis at Inverell on Thursday. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. BEST BET Race 10 No. 3: TAKEMINE Won two from 21, both wins were at Inverell. Reliable type. NEXT BEST Race 7 No. 7: RETHINK IT Only visit was a win on Cup Day here this year over this trip. VALUE Race 2 No. 6: CASINO COLLECTION Trials and starting price suggest she is a good deal better than her debut. DAILY DOUBLE 1st Leg: 2, 2nd Leg: 3 QUADDIE Race 7: 1, 3, 7 Race 8: 2, 3, 13 Race 9: 1, 3, 8 Race 10: 3 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Matthew McGuren looks a real contender for the TAB Jockeys Challenge. INSIDE MAIL - INVERELL RACE 1: PAYNE RACING LISZTOMANIA BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP 1800m EVERLASTING KISS (6) won her only start so far at Inverell and better yet, it was over this same trip. Nope, she won by a little over a length. As for more recent times, she was fourth to Existential Bob at Wyong last start and he of course won at Ipswich on Wednesday. MINDSPACE (3) has won four times with four placings with a handful of honourable fourths too. CASINO COLLECTION (6) had trialled rather well prior to her debut (fittingly) at Casino where she started at $2.70. Beat one home but had excuses and she is obviously way better than that. Expect more here. CITY GOLD SPEED (1) had every chance on debut at Scone when a 'fading' third but it was the Cup and the winner, I Am Brave, is at least city grade. Bet: Casino Collection to win, quinella 1, 6 JU TWO (4) could be saved for elsewhere but is ready to win, anywhere. Homeland has placed at four of his nine starts. His is in fact, three placings and a fourth in his time with Greg Howells. Well placed here only but for the wide draw perhaps. LUCKY ON LANDING (5) turned in an encouraging debut at Mudgee from a wide draw over 1200m. In box 5 here and 1400m. OL' MATE COOP (13) was tipped out after finishing a distant third to Shaggy at Coffs Harbour on debut. The Tony Newing-trained gelding resumed with a closing third at Grafton over 1130m. Barrier 4 this time, fitter, and the added metres seems like it will assist. SHOW US YA TEXTS (11) has been trialling like she won't stay a maiden for long. PIEDI VELOCI (4) is a big watch on its debut. AUSBRED YAHOO (3) has only managed to win once in 25 starts but she has placed seven times and five of them are seconds. She doesn't run too many bad races and does seem to run her best races when the jar is out of the track. Sent out the right signs first-up. WHISKEY MISS (14) is a million times better than her brief resume would suggest. TREAD SOFTLY (4) is a well-travelled horse who has raced in Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and naturally, here in NSW. To his credit, he has won six times including once at Eagle Farm. First-up here off a big trial win. RHYTHM IS A DANCER (1) is a six-time winner himself with eight placings. Has the race fitness after a respectable fourth of 15 in the Scone Country Cup last Friday. RETHINK IT (7) is two from 28 but one was at Inverell at this same trip. It was on Inverell Cup, Jan 1 this year, so it wasn't a bad line-up. Find this easier than the Glen Innes Cup last start. Ditto that for CASSIA LANE (1) who was one spot ahead of Rethink It at Glen Innes. Cassia Lane has two wins and a second from four visits to Inverell. NAVY STEEL (2) has two wins from his five starts. The son of Merchant Navy is '141' this current campaign, all three were rather strong races, perhaps not unfair to say that they were better than this? LAMPKIN LANE (13) has won only two of his 46 starts but placed 11 times, some of them were 'runs' every bit as good as the winner. He does look to be getting close. SNOW FALCON (1) is flying, pardon the pun, and arrives here on a hat-trick after those 'over the top' wins at home at Grafton. Note, she was runner-up to Bodhi Boy at Port Macquarie four runs back. Eager to see how ULTIMATE SAY (8) follows up a hugely impressive debut win. Never easy the next time but has drawn well here. B et: Snow Falcon to win, quinella 1, 8 TAKEMINE (3) has an overall record of two wins, six seconds and two thirds from 21 starts which all in all, makes him a pretty reliable type. But what makes him an appealing betting proposition is that both of those wins were here at Inverell. COOL FIZZ (2) has three wins and 10 seconds, one of those seconds was at this track and distance. Her most attractive stat is that all 3 wins are at this trip. Bet: Takemine to win INVERELL BEST BET Race 10 No. 3: Takemine Won two from 21, both wins were at Inverell. Reliable type. NEXT BEST Race 7 No. 7: Rethink It Only visit was a win on Cup Day here this year over this trip. Gunnedah preview, inside mail and tips: Family matters to Inverell trainer Todd Payne
Inverell trainer Todd Payne arrives at Gunnedah on Monday with suitable assignments on the agenda for both the younger and older siblings of his undisputed stable star Lisztomania. Dream Ahead's son Lisztomania went within inches of running down last month's $1 million Country Championship Final winner Know Thyself in what was another now typically barnstorming effort from Payne's six-year-old. On Monday at Gunnedah it will be the turn of his seven-year-old half sister, Kalahari Heart and five-year-old half-sister Desert Cougar to uphold the family honour in their respective races. Desert Cougar, a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, came from midfield to wind-up a close and closing fourth when she resumed at Tamworth on April 24 in a 1000m Country Maiden. 'She had a few little niggles when we first got her so we gave her a run and then we put her in the paddock and she's come over everything and I was really happy with her run the other day,'' Payne said. 'She's probably just looking for 1200m but another 1000m run will top her off. 'This is just another stepping stone but I am happy with the way she has progressed after Tamworth. 'She's a nice horse going forward.' And while Desert Cougar is making her Gunnedah racetrack debut, Kalahari Heart is much more familiar with the venue, located three hours south of her Inverell address. The daughter of the four-times Group 1 winner Show A Heart has raced at Gunnedah four times for a win and a second. 'She loves Gunnedah'' Payne said. 'She was sort of unlucky, every time we went somewhere through this prep, it was either washed out or there was a fire or something happened, so she went a long time between runs and there was no racing around so we were forced to go to the unsuitable 1100m last time but back to 1400m and blinkers on, I think she'll be thereabouts.' Kalahari Princess' is a very reliable broodmare for her former trainer, breeder and owner Mark Taylor given she has produced foals at each of her past four seasons at stud. For the record, she delivered a Nicconi gelding in 2021, a Cosmic Force colt in 2022 and a filly by the Inglis Nursery winner Acrobat in 2023. Her 2024 foal is a colt by North Pacific and will be offered at Lot 56 at the Magic Millions Weanling Sale on May 25 on the Gold Coast. â– â– â– â– â– RACE 4 Justice Please is by Justify out of a Camelot mare which equips her to run 1600 to 2000m at some stage. Third-up here at 1400m off a 1200m then 1300m, both were Provincial maidens. Drawn wide but surely, she stands up in this grade. Stablemate Oakfield Mercury has trialled rather well and has Aaron Bullock to help with the wide alley. Mad Harry is 21 start maiden but has placed eight times. Bet: Justice Please to win, quinella 2,9. RACE 5 Interventionist is unplaced in all five previous first-up runs but they haven't all been bad and this race looks within his reach. That said, he has a wide draw so one would expect he is going to be giving away a fair start. Fleetly, on the other hand, has barrier 1 coupled with the race-fitness being a last start winner. Harder here but capable of taking the next step. Bet: Interventionist each-way or if scratched Fleetly to win, Daily Double 1st Leg 3, 2nd Leg 12. Lady Olenna was costly when beaten at $1.45 on debut. That said, the winner that day is above-average. As for Lady Olenna, she won back her fans with an emphatic win in a 900m Maiden at Scone with Aaron Bullock on from a good draw; same story here. Eighty Eight Stars won at Gunnedah last preparation. Has some respectable country form to support him. Market the best guide. Bet: Lady Olenna to win. RACE 7 Exceedaqa is a Kris Lees-trained filly whose record reads; eight starts for a win, a second and two thirds. The two glaringly obvious highlights are her debut third at Doomben behind stablemate Miss Busslinger no less and a fourth at Kempsey one day to Sumo Fish which made it to last month's Country Championships Final. Placed to win here. Tigers Roar has only managed to win once in 17 starts but he has placed six times and has some provincial form. Wasted Days looks to be closing in on his second win. Bet: Exceedaqa to win, exacta 12 to beat 2. â– â– â– â– â– BEST BET Race 3 No. 12: Miss Arisa Well-bred filly that has looked the part in her trials. NEXT BEST Race 1 No. 1: Musumeci Can build on a meritorious recent debut at Tamworth. VALUE Race 4 No. 9 Justice Please Suited dropping back to country grade and stepping up to 1400m. QUADDIE Race 4: 2,9 Race 5: 3,7,13 Race 6: 4,6,9 Race 7: 2,5,12

Tamworth preview: Green Shadows is chasing gold in Tamworth Cup
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. The Big Dance last November was an afterthought for Green Shadows according to co-trainer Gerald Ryan but it's at the forefront of his mind this year. Ryan and co-trainer Sterling Alexiou have targeted the Tamworth Cup (1400m), which carries Big Dance eligibility, as an ideal starting point for Green Shadows who races extremely well first-up. 'The Big Dance will be the plan for him this year. He has to get through this race first and we will see how he goes,' said Ryan. 'About six weeks ago we decided to target the Tamworth Cup first-up with him. 'It would be nice if he could book his place in the Big Dance now and we can make a plan to have him spot on in November.' The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! Green Shadows scored a first-up win in a Benchmark 78 at Warwick Farm on April 1 last year and progressed to winning a Midway at Randwick before capturing the Goulburn Cup at his eighth start for the preparation on August 25. He then had to stay up until November 5 for the $3 million feature. 'The Big Dance was an afterthought with him last campaign. He won the Goulburn Cup at his eighth start and was over the top by the time he got to Randwick three runs later,' he said. 'He still ran an honest race. He drew bad and was out wide all-the-way. 'He spelled well and I reckon he grew which is strange at his age. 'He has comeback well, his work has been good and his trials have been solid without his blinkers on.' He will try and replicate the success of Big Dance winner Gringotts who qualified for the race by winning the Tamworth Cup. Inverell trainer Todd Payne has his stable star and Country Championship Final runner-up Lisztomania in the Cup as well as the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday. 'Tamworth looks more tempting as the rail is out nine metres at Randwick which doesn't help but he does race so well there,' Payne said. 'He hasn't missed a place in six starts there and that's what makes it hard not to look at that race.' Lisztomania has drawn wide in gate 14 in the Tamworth Cup, the same barrier he had when a close second in the Country Championship Qualifier. 'It doesn't really matter too much with him because he will be coming down the middle of the track anyway,' he said. 'He will go for a spell after this and our next mission is The Kosciuszko and we will go into that fresh.' Payne also has three other runners for the day including Desert Cougar, who is a half-sister to Lisztomania, in the Maiden Plate (1000m). The daughter of Capitalist only had one run for Payne at the end of last campaign when fifth to Sharpen The Knives at Armidale on December 8. 'She ran a handy race and we put her away,' he said. 'She trialled well the other day and I'm very happy with her going into this race. I think she is a chance.' Payne also saddles up Celestialconqueror in the Super Maiden (1400m). 'He's a nice horse but will want further as he gets into his preparation,' Payne said. 'The 1400m first-up is a good starting point for him and the blinkers go on. He's worked in them and is a lot more focused.' Takemine will back up in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1000m) following strong closing second over 1100m at Armidale last week. 'She is dropping back to 1000m and will get back but the last time she raced at the track and distance, she rattled home to be beaten a nostril,' he said. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ It's been a long and frustrating preparation with Duped By Spin but trainer Craig Widdison is hoping she can pick up a well-earned win when she crosses the border. Duped By Spin started her campaign at Wagga on November 1 and had a couple of hiccups along the way but found some consistency in the past two months with consecutive placings before contesting last week's Albury Cup. 'She's had a fairly long preparation but nothing has gone right for her,' said Widdison. 'Every time we thought we had he ready, something went wrong then her last few runs had been good up until the Cup last week. 'We were hoping to get to the fence and have a cheap run but that didn't eventuate.' The five-year-old finished second last behind Matusalem in the Listed event but will appreciate a drop back in grade when she backs-up in the Benchmark 82 Handicap (2000m). Prior to that, she was second in the Tom Patton Cup at Wagga, second in the Albury Mile behind County Kilkenny and a close fourth to Star Buyer in the Gundagai Cup. 'Her run in the Albury Cup was good on a heavy track behind County Kilkenny who grows a leg on the wet,' he said 'In the Gundagai Cup, she was left in front and fair way out and just got swamped late. She is a better chaser. 'She has taken no harm out of the Albury Cup and this looks a nice race for her. 'Nick Souquet is back on as well. He knows her quite well and has had some luck on her. 'She deserves another win and hopefully she can get that here.' Widdison's other runner is Sister Shay who is looking for a breakthrough win in the Maiden Handicap (1500m) after placings runner-up in her three runs for Widdison following a debut seventh at Kyneton for Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman. 'She has been great with three seconds in-a-row but it's also been a bit hard to take,' he said. 'I have thrown the blinkers on her this week in the hope they can help her find an extra length or so. 'We have also gone with a claim this week, not that Wardy (Brendan Ward) has done anything wrong. 'We just wanted to try something different and that two kilos might just make the difference.'
