The 2025 Movie That's Already Made $2 Billion Is Finally Coming to U.S. Theaters
Since its release in China earlier this year, one movie has dominated the global box office: Ne Zha 2. This animated film is a sequel to Ne Zha, which was released in 2019, and both are loosely based on a 16th-century Chinese novel called Investiture of the Gods. With superhero-like powers and a modern take on mythological stories, Ne Zha 2 has grossed at least $2 billion at the box office in China. However, the movie may now be ready to top its own record.
On August 22, A24 will distribute and English-dubbed version of Ne Zha 2 to movie theaters in North America, Australia, and New Zealand, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Michelle Yeoh, who starred in A24's hugely successful film, Everything Everywhere All at Once, in 2022, will star as the lead voice actor in the new version of Ne Zha story focuses on demigod Ne Zha, who has mortal parents, and struggles to find his place in the world. There's also an ancient force trying to destroy the entire world, which only Ne Zha can stop.
As THR points out, the introduction of a dubbed version of Ne Zha 2 to the U.S. represents a "litmus test" of whether or not a global hit will connect with American audiences as well.
