Kyle Larson Blames Talladega Nights For Making NASCAR a 'Joke'

NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson thinks the 2006 comedy movie, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, made the sport look like a joke. Although Larson admitted that he liked the movie, he believes it didn't do much good for NASCAR. Larson's comments arrive amid reports of a Days of Thunder sequel in the pipeline that could help boost NASCAR's popularity. The sport has been adopting several measures to increase fan interest following a reported slump in the sport's following. NASCAR enjoyed immense popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s, which began to fade after the economic crisis in 2008. In the recent past, NASCAR collaborated with Netflix for two seasons of the NASCAR: Full Speed docuseries, seasons 1 and 2, as an attempt to increase fan following. The introduction of the Chicago street race is also said to have popularized the sport. Larson, the 2021 Cup Series champion, gave his opinion about the Talladega Nights movie, arguing that it worked against NASCAR rather than introducing the sport to new fan bases. Speaking on the Games With Names podcast, co-host Sam Morrill asked Larson if drivers liked Talladega Nights and if they found it funny or dumb. Larson said: Kyle Larson, driver of the #5 Chevrolet, walks the grid during qualifying for the NASCAR Cup Series Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol at Iowa Speedway on August 02, 2025 in Newton, Iowa. Kyle Larson, driver of the #5 Chevrolet, walks the grid during qualifying for the NASCAR Cup Series Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol at Iowa Speedway on August 02, 2025 in Newton, Iowa."I mean I like the movie. I think it did not do anything good for our sport. I think it turned our sport into like a joke, unfortunately." Larson also opened up about the possibility of a Days of Thunder sequel being produced, especially considering Hendrick Motorsports chairman Jeff Gordon's keen interest, and his friendship with Tom Cruise. Larson added: "I was with Jeff Gordon the other night and he's good friends with Tom and he went to whatever the premiere or whatever of Mission Impossible. He's like, When I saw Tom, he's like, 'We're doing it. We got to do another Days of Thunder.' I hope they do it." When asked if he would do a cameo, Larson said with a smile: "I would absolutely be in it. I would like to be in it." Back in June Gordon revealed a confirmation from Cruise that a Days of Thunder sequel was coming. He said: "Let's do Days of Thunder 2, I am all for that. Tom Cruise has told me it's gonna happen, so let's make it happen. I can't go back to driving, I am too old for that, so gonna have to be one of our four or all four of our Hendrick drivers, Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, William Byron. When I came into NASCAR, Days of Thunder had just come out. It played a huge role in the growth of NASCAR. So let's bring it back." Co-producer of the F1 movie, Jerry Bruckheimer, recently confirmed that a sequel to the Days of Thunder is being worked on. When he was asked if he was going to collaborate with Cruise for the movie, he said: "Well, there's always new technologies. There's always new ways to do things and to see things, and Tom is such a great individual - comes up with phenomenal ideas. So we'll have something really exciting for an audience once we pull it together."

NASCAR's Daniel Suarez Has One Way to go After Trackhouse Split

Following the announcement by Trackhouse Racing that it was parting ways with NASCAR Cup Series driver Daniel Suarez after the 2025 season, The Athletic's reporter Jordan Bianchi has revealed the most viable option left for the Mexican driver in 2026. The number of full-time seats in the Cup Series campaign is nearly full next year, leaving no room for Suarez. Bianchi admits that it would be risky for Suarez to enter free agency next year. Instead, it would make more sense if he raced in the Xfinity Series for a year and returned to the Cup Series in 2027. He wrote: "Unfortunately for Suarez, he's entering free agency at a time when not a lot of viable options exist. Nearly all 36 full-time seats are already taken for next season. This is why many within the industry thought Suárez's best opportunity to reset his career was to take a ride in NASCAR's second-tier Xfinity Series, likely with Kaulig Racing or JR Motorsports, then re-enter free agency a year from now in what is anticipated to be a much more robust market." Suarez, however, is inclined to remain in the Cup Series and likely sees a potential opportunity opening up in the future. While Spire Motorsports could be one option, according to Bianchi, it remains to be seen if it would be willing to hire Suarez in place of Justin Haley. MoreSuarez joined Trackhouse in 2021 and has since won two Cup Series races. Being friends with the Trackhouse team owner, Justin Marks, the two mutually decided it was time to close this chapter. Fortunately for Suarez, Marks revealed that he would help him find the next opportunity in NASCAR. Opening up about going their separate ways, Marks said: "Look, Daniel's been a huge part of this company for four and a half years now and when we sat down and mapped out our three-year and our five-year plan and the sponsorships and everything that we're trying to accomplish over the next five years of the company, we just got to a point where we felt like that relationship had beared a lot of fruit for us, but it just was time to move on. "So, as we grow and as the team grows, obviously, we have to identify different opportunities. Look, Daniel has been a huge part of this company and a great friend of mine. We met last night, me and him in the hotel for an hour down in the lobby and we talked about our time together, everything that we've accomplished together and him and I are in a really good place. "It's just this isn't a sport where you do the same thing forever and as we grow, we just felt like it was time to wrap up that relationship and work to try to help him to find the next opportunity, but continue to grow as a company [is] what we're trying to accomplish."

Last year, Penske Racing's Ryan Blaney led 201 of the 350 laps to become the inaugural winner of this race. William Byron, Chase Elliott, Christopher Bell, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. rounded out the top five, with Stenhouse's result being particularly impressive since he started the race back in 35th. Kyle Larson was on the pole last year, but finished the race 34th. On Sunday, Joe Gibbs Racing's Chase Briscoe will lead the field to the green flag after running a 23.004-second lap in qualifying. Byron starts second while Larson starts third. Austin Cindric, Blaney's Penske teammate, starts fourth, while Brad Keselowski, who is in must-win territory if he wants to make the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, will start fifth. Chase Elliott currently leads the regular season point standings, but playoff points would have Denny Hamlin in front if the playoffs began today. The biggest gap between playoff and regular season standings belongs to Shane Van Gisbergen, who is fourth in the playoff standings thanks to his road course wins but just 27th in the regular season standings.
