Victim injured in Des Moines apartment fire has died
DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man who was critically injured in an apartment fire on Tuesday morning has died. Just after 6 a.m. the Des Moines Police Department and Fire Department responded to an apartment fire in the 3700 block of 57th Street in the Merle Hay Neighborhood. Iowa HHS confirms third case of measles in 2025 When firefighters arrived at the scene they found an adult male, identified as 63-year-old William Melroy, inside his unit fighting the fire, the DMPD said. Melroy was injured and transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He was later airlifted to the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center's Burn Unit. On Wednesday afternoon, the DMPD announced that Melroy succumbed to his injuries overnight. According to the DMPD, evidence collected in the investigation so far does not suggest the fire was intentionally started. Third case of measles in Iowa this year reported by HHS
DES MOINES, Iowa — On Wednesday afternoon Iowa Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that it's confirmed a third case of measles in the state this year. Iowa HHS said the case was confirmed in an unvaccinated child in eastern Iowa. The child was exposed to the virus during international travel. According to Iowa HHS, the child did visit different public areas in eastern Iowa while contagious, including a Costco, Walmart, and Marshalls. To learn more about those locations visit the HHS website. A new rhino is calling Blank Park Zoo home On Tuesday, HHS reported the second confirmed measles case in the state. The case also occurred in eastern Iowa in a vaccinated adult male, however HHS said that the cases confirmed so far are not related. As of Wednesday, there have been three confirmed cases of measles in Iowa. The first case was reported in May in an unvaccinated adult female in central Iowa. Measles is a highly contagious, and potentially deadly disease. According to HHS the most effective way to prevent the disease is through the MMR vaccine. Iowa HHS reports second case of measles in state this year
DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Health and Human Services is reporting that a second confirmed case of measles has been detected in Iowa this year. According to the Iowa HHS website, the second case was confirmed in a vaccinated adult male between the ages of 18 to 40 in eastern Iowa in June. It is unknown at this time whether the patient traveled outside of the state. Iowa DNR reporting fish kill at Des Moines lake In May HHS announced the first confirmed case of measles in the state since 2019. The infected individual was an unvaccinated adult female and had traveled outside of the state and internationally. The announcement comes as the highly contagious disease continues to spread across the country, with 34 states reporting cases. According to the CDC, over 1,100 cases have been reported in the country as of June 5, a majority of them occurring in Texas. Measles is a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease. It spreads through the air when a person infected with the virus coughs or sneezes. Symptoms appear roughly 7-21 days after infection and include: cough, red and/or watery eyes, nasal congestion, fever, rash, and Koplik spots. If you believe you've been exposed to measles or may have measles HHS says to call your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Two baby girls surrendered under Safe Haven Law in February
DES MOINES, Iowa — Two baby girls were surrendered to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services under the Safe Haven Law in February. A baby girl born on February 8 and a baby girl born on February 12 will both be placed with foster families until a permanent placement is determined, according to the Iowa HHS. Polk County approves $750,000 to fund school with housing for at-risk youth These are the first two babies surrendered in 2025. This brings the overall total to 76 infants surrendered since the law was put into effect more than two decades ago. A total of eight infants were surrendered in 2024, according to the Iowa HHS. The Iowa Safe Haven Act is an option for parents who determine they cannot care for an infant up to 90 days old. Designated safe haven's locations include hospitals, police and fire stations.
