Being aware of dangerous substances during Poison Prevention Week

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — With this week being Poison Prevention Week, the Iowa Poison Control Center in Sioux City is reminding people to be aware of the possible dangers in their own homes. Many household substances can lead to poisoning if ingested or used in the incorrect amounts. While anybody at any age could be at risk of accidentally being poisoned, children are the most vulnerable. Indiana Wesleyan players hold clinic on court named after longtime school sponsor Bob Roe 'Under five, particularly, they're curious, they're learning about things in their environment by putting them in their mouths. So, the toddler may be most vulnerable and that's the importance of all the things to prevent, keeping products in their original containers, keeping them up, away from a child's reach,' said Linda Kalin, nurse & executive director for the Iowa Poison Control Center. Officials said parents need to take an extra second to make sure items are stored away safely. 'Any medication really unless it's for the child should be safely stored away. Something simple as oven cleaner and products like that, that you may be using put on the counter to answer the phone or a doorbell, that takes a second, So, again, storing them away,' said Kalin. If you or a loved one does come in contact with a poison, call the Iowa Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
