Iowa roads see decrease in fatal crashes at the start of ‘100 deadliest days of summer'

(Photo by Kathie Obradovich/Iowa Capital Dispatch) Memorial Day 2025 kicked off what the Iowa State Patrol calls the '100 deadliest days of summer,' a period of time marked by an increase in teen driver crashes and fatalities. This time of year, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, is when many younger drivers are hitting the roads for the first time and others may be indulging in the holiday season. Law enforcement agencies, including the Iowa State Patrol, increased their presence on the roadways over the holiday weekend and noticed a continued pattern of decreasing fatal crashes over the past three years. 'Our focus is to make the roadways a safe and enjoyable experience,' said Sgt. Alex Dinkla, public information officer for Iowa State Patrol. 'This is one of those periods where that extra enforcement, we know, did pay off.' The state patrol arrested 21 individuals for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and covered over 47 crashes across the state. The Iowa Department of Transportation reported two fatal accidents in the days leading up to Memorial Day. Alex Dinkla, public information officer for Iowa State Patrol Many of the crashes occurred at intersections around the state. Dinkla noted that drivers often forget the blind spot on both sides of their car, between their windshield and door window. These blind spots can obscure entire vehicles from the driver's view. Dinkla recommends drivers check two or three times before crossing an intersection to ensure they spot any threats. In 2023, the DOT reported four fatal crashes in the days before the holiday, one of which was attributed to alcohol. In 2024, there were three fatal crashes. This year, the number dropped to two. Dinkla said that while the patrol doesn't 'want to call that a success because that's still two fatalities,' it's evident the extra presence and effort to educate the public is making a difference. Going forward, Dinkla said, the ISP plans to utilize their Air Wing Unit, a unit of five pilots and aircrafts primarily used for traffic enforcement, more during other holidays and times of peak travel. Founded in 1956, the unit currently consists of three Cessna 182 aircraft, one Cessna 206 and one SR-22 CIRUSS. Two of the aircraft have thermal imaging equipment to aid in missing-person cases, fugitive location and specialized surveillance. 'None of us know when we may or may not be involved in a fatal crash,' he said. Boone man killed in Thursday morning crash on Highway 30
BOONE COUNTY, Iowa — A Boone man was killed in a crash on Highway 30 Thursday morning. At around 8:23 a.m. the Boone County Sheriff's Office and multiple other agencies responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of Montana Road and Highway 30, just southwest of Boone, involving a Ford Ranger and Ford Mustang. According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, the Ford Ranger was traveling southbound on Montana Road and failed to yield to a Mustang that was traveling eastbound on Highway 30, and the two vehicles collided. Former Marshalltown substitute teacher accused of sexually exploiting student The driver of the Ranger, identified as 89-year-old Dale Ray Crouse of Boone, was transported to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries, according to the sheriff's office. No other injuries were reported. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Boone County Sheriff's Office, Boone Police Department, Boone Fire Department, and personnel from the Boone County Hospital. The Iowa State Patrol will be handling the investigation into the crash. Iowa teen killed in head-on crash in Jefferson County
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Iowa — A 17-year-old driver died Thursday morning, and the other driver was transported by air ambulance to Iowa City following a head-on crash in southeast Iowa. A crash report from the Iowa State Patrol said the collision happened in the 1300 block of Packwood Road. That's about 12 miles northwest of Fairfield. Sausage plant planned for Perry, 500 new jobs to be created The ISP said a Toyota Camry driven by Ava Ford of Packwood was southbound on Packwood Road when it crossed the center line and struck a Dodge Ram pickup truck head-on. Ford died as a result of the crash. The driver of the pickup truck, 40-year-old Clinton Weaver of Lancaster, Missouri, was injured and transported to University of Iowa Hospitals. His condition was not released in the report. The Iowa State Patrol said it is still investigating the cause of the crash. Pedestrian struck after driver falls asleep on I-35, Iowa State Patrol says
DES MOINES, Iowa – A pedestrian was injured in Webster County Sunday after a driver fell asleep at the wheel on I-35. The Iowa State Patrol said the crash happened around 6:35 p.m. at Mile Marker 62 on southbound I-35. That's about four miles south of the Cumming exit. Police say West Des Moines teen, missing two days, has been found Dale Acker, 62 of Greenfield, was driving a Chevy Equinox southbound when he fell asleep and entered the west side ditch, according to the ISP crash report. The SUV struck Eric Randolph, 42 of Des Moines, who was in the ditch. Randolph was transported to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. His condition was not listed. Des Moines man dies after Webster County crash
DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man died Thursday, and two others were injured following a crash in Webster County. The Iowa State Patrol's crash report said the collision happened at US 20 and P29 around 4:03 p.m. The intersection is about 12 miles from Fort Dodge, to the southwest. According to the report, a Honda Fit driven by Hal Chase, 82 of Des Moines, was traveling north on P29 and didn't stop for the stop sign controlling access to eastbound Highway 20. An eastbound Lincoln Nautilus driven by 78-year-old Diane Witt of Arcadia broadsided the Fit. Arrest made in Ames vehicle burglaries Chase, Witt, and a passenger were transported to UnityPoint in Fort Dodge, where Chase was pronounced dead. The ISP did not release the conditions of the others involved in the crash. The investigation into the crash continues.
