Local boxing gym hosts event honoring late teammate

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – It's been almost a year since Argen 'Lil G' Garcia passed away in a tragic car crash. Garcia was a member of the local boxing gym Gorilla Heavy Hitters, learning the fundamentals of boxing while getting his first taste of combat sports. Child killed in Gardendale crash, several others injured To honor and commemorate his life, Garcia's parents asked Gorilla Heavy Hitters if they could hold a yearly event to celebrate their son, who was passionate about the sport. Without hesitation, Owner Iram Sanchez put the event together and called it 'Lil G Amateur Fight Night'. 'We want to hold this memorial event do it once a year. In memory of him,' says Sanchez. 'It's going to be a good event. He was full of life as soon as he walked in, and the whole room would get excited. He was just a special kid, very brave, a great fighter. He had a bright future.' For the special event, Sanchez ordered multiple custom belts that display Garcia's picture and say Lil G. Sanchez tells us every fighter who wins during the bout will receive a belt. Gorilla Heavy Hitters hosting first promotional event in Odessa

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Gorilla Heavy Hitters is a local boxing gym set to have its debut promotional boxing event, 'Legacy Fights,' at the Ector County Coliseum on April 26th. Featured on the bout are local talent in the surrounding areas of West Texas. The mastermind behind Gorilla Heavy Hitters is manager and owner Iram Sanchez, who says that he's been dreaming of having his very own promotion for some time now. 'I've always had a dream to have my own promotion company and to help kids and just to build champions,' says Sanchez. 'It means a lot to me to have opened the doors for these kids with GHH Promotions.' Co-headlining the event are two of Odessa's own, brother Conrad Martinez and Iram Sanchez. Conrad is currently 9-2, coming off a loss last July. However, he views the experience that he learned from his last fight will end up helping him in this next one. 'We learned that we belong there at that stage,' says Martinez. 'I'm just ready to get in the ring and, you know, show the people what I've been working on.' Iram Sanchez holds a 1-0 record as of now and is taking full advantage of fighting in front of the home crowd, saying that it's his time now.
