Over 30,000 narcotic pills seized in W. Iraq
BAGHDAD, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) announced Wednesday the seizure of over 30,000 narcotic pills and the arrest of several suspects in two security operations in the western province of Anbar. In the first operation, one of the country's "most wanted" drug traffickers was arrested in the Ramadi district, INSS said in a statement, adding that the suspect had more than 3,000 Captagon pills and a quantity of crystal meth. The second operation targeted a warehouse engaged in "illegal activities," where Iraqi security forces seized over 30,000 smuggled psychotropic pills, it said. The INSS did not disclose details about the other arrests but stated that all detainees and confiscated substances were handed over to judicial authorities for legal action. The Iraqi government has waged "a war on drugs," identifying it as a main source of funding for terrorism.

Shafaq News/ The Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) arrested multiple suspects and seized more than 30,000 narcotic pills in two separate operations in the western province of Al-Anbar. In a statement released on Wednesday, the agency said in the first operation, a joint security team apprehended 'one of the country's most wanted drug traffickers in Ramadi.' The suspect was caught in possession of over 3,000 Captagon pills and a quantity of crystal meth. The second operation, according to the statement, targeted a pharmaceutical warehouse engaged in 'unauthorized' activities. Authorities seized over 30,000 smuggled psychotropic pills and 2,500 unauthorized Tramal injections. All detainees and confiscated items were referred to the relevant judicial authorities for legal action. The General Directorate for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances announced earlier that in the first quarter of 2025, the security forces arrested more than 3,000 suspects and seized over two tons of illicit substances.

President Joseph Aoun arrived at Baghdad International Airport at 10 am on Sunday, where he was received by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani, his office director Ihsan Al Awadi, the head of the Iraqi National Security Service Abdel Karim Al Basri, along with several senior Iraqi officials, the Lebanese ambassador to Iraq Ali Habhab, the chargé d'affaires Nada Majoul, and embassy staff. The President and the Iraqi Prime Minister proceeded to the platform where the Lebanese and Iraqi national anthems were played, followed by an honor guard review. President Aoun then greeted members of the Iraqi delegation, while Prime Minister Sudani greeted members of the Lebanese delegation. From the airport, President Aoun made the following statement: 'I am pleased to accept the invitation of my brother, His Excellency the President of the brotherly Republic of Iraq, Abdul Latif Rashid, whom I previously met in Cairo on the sidelines of the extraordinary Arab Summit held in the Egyptian capital. This visit is also an opportunity to meet with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani, reflecting the depth of the historic brotherly relations that bind Lebanon and Iraq and embody our shared commitment to enhancing cooperation and coordination in various fields. This visit is an opportunity to thank the Iraqi leadership and the brotherly Iraqi people for their continuous support to Lebanon and for the valuable assistance they have provided to the Lebanese people, especially during the recent war witnessed by Lebanon. We also highly appreciate the shipments of Iraqi oil, which have provided vital support to Lebanon in its difficult circumstances, expressing the sincere spirit of Arab brotherhood and its noble meanings. I must also congratulate brotherly Iraq on its outstanding success in hosting the Arab Summit and the Arab Economic Development Summit, which marked an important milestone in the path of joint Arab work. Iraq foils two 'innovative' drug smuggling attempts
Shafaq News/ Security forces foiled two drug smuggling attempts in Baghdad and Basra using what they described as 'innovative' concealment methods, the Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) said on Friday. In Baghdad, authorities arrested a suspect after discovering 700 grams of methamphetamine hidden inside electrical appliances, while another in Basra was detained for attempting to smuggle 400 grams of the same substance concealed within footwear. The agency stated that both operations were the result of meticulous intelligence work and sustained field efforts, executed in coordination with the judiciary following the acquisition of necessary legal approvals. The suspects have been referred to the appropriate authorities for further legal proceedings. The announcement comes days after security forces in the Kurdistan Region seized 30 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine in Al-Sulaymaniyah, one of the largest drug hauls in the area this year. Authorities there have warned of a growing drug crisis fueled by regional trafficking routes and domestic distribution networks. Iraq has become a key transit country for synthetic drugs such as methamphetamine and Captagon, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with trafficking routes stretching from Iran and Afghanistan toward Gulf states. Security experts say the country's porous borders and limited enforcement capacity have made it vulnerable to regional smuggling networks.

Iraq sentences drug 'kingpin' to death
Shafaq News/ A suspected drug 'kingpin' was arrested in Baghdad on Saturday in an intelligence-led raid, the Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) said. During the raid, INSS officers confiscated 1,350 LSD blotters, over 12 kilograms of marijuana, 800 grams of cocaine, 1,850 narcotic pills, and a set of drug-use tools, the agency affirmed. The suspect was reportedly apprehended in the act and referred to the Third Al-Karkh Criminal Court, which sentenced him to death under Article 27 of Iraq's Anti-Narcotics Law. Earlier, Iraqi authorities intercepted a drug smuggling attempt at the southern Shalamcheh border crossing, seizing nearly two kilograms ofcrystalmeth.
