Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court receives British Ambassador
Baghdad-INA Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court, Judge Jassim Mohammed Abboud, affirmed on Wednesday that the Constitution guarantees the rights and freedoms of Iraqis, including voting, elections, and candidacy. A statement from the court, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that "Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court, Judge Jassim Mohammed Abboud, received the British Ambassador Irfan Siddiq and his accompanying delegation in his office at the Federal Supreme Court." It pointed out that "during the meeting, the need to strengthen joint cooperation in all fields between the Republic of Iraq and the United Kingdom, particularly in the field of constitutional justice, was addressed." The Chief Justice emphasized that, "Despite the difficulties facing Iraq, the 2005 Constitution of the Republic of Iraq, as a document of the Iraqi people that may not be violated for any reason, has established the fundamental principles of sound democratic construction, with the goal of achieving popular democracy and realizing the principle of the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power, in accordance with Articles 5 and 6 of the Constitution." It added, "Iraq is about to hold general elections for the next parliamentary term, and the measure of the success of the elections depends on the real level of popular participation." It explained that "the Constitution guarantees the public and private rights and freedoms of the Iraqi people, including the right to vote, elect, and run for office, it is prohibited to infringe upon or influence these constitutional rights by any party or for any reason, leading to the building of a strong civil state based on national identity and transcending sectarian, ethnic, and interest-based quotas." He continued, "The Constitution also requires the preservation of public funds and the prevention of encroachment upon them, in accordance with Article (27), given that public funds are sacred and their protection is the duty of every citizen. It is prohibited to use such funds for illegitimate purposes." For his part, the British Ambassador affirmed that "his country is keen to cooperate with the State of Iraq in all areas, including cooperation to achieve the constitutional goals of sound democratic construction, the preservation of public funds, and the rule of law."

Al-Sudani met today, Monday, with the British Ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Irfan Siddiq. The meeting reviewed avenues of mutual cooperation and efforts to strengthen the economic partnership in light of bilateral agreements and understandings between the two countries. The statement read 'During the meeting, His Excellency highlighted Iraq's current openness in the fields of development and infrastructure construction, as well as the state's expanded capacity in service delivery. He pointed to the potential for cooperation between the public and private sectors and British companies across various investment activities.' It further said 'Ambassador Irfan Siddiq affirmed his country's desire to deepen cooperation and partnership with Iraq, and to pursue joint efforts in support of regional stability.'

Iraqi-British Cooperation Puts Basra on the Water Sustainability Map
Iraqi and British companies are continuing work on the project to treat and exploit sustainable (non-conventional) water resources in Basra Governorate. This project aims to transform useless water into sustainable resources for human, agricultural, and industrial use. The project includes treating agricultural drainage water, sewage water, and highly saline water resulting from tidal, as well as treating the saltwater entering the Shatt al-Arab. The new British Ambassador to Iraq, Irfan Siddiq, toured the project, accompanied by officials from the implementing companies. Ambassador Siddiq told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "I am very happy about my first visit to Basra as the new British Ambassador, and a visit to this very important project, the Comprehensive Water Project, must be part of it." He added, "Water needs in Basra are a major and very important priority, and one of the foundations of life. As a result of the lack of investment in recent years, there are environmental problems and a lack of clean and potable water." He emphasized that this project, through the investment of British companies, will contribute to "providing significant quantities of water." A huge amount of pure water suitable for human and animal use in Basra," describing it as "a very important project, which enjoys the full support of the British government, and we are proud of it." Siddiq explained that the visit is "the first, but also a comprehensive visit from the British Embassy, and there is a temporary presence of the British Consulate in Basra." He wished "every success for this project and this initial phase, which, if successful, will lead to the signing of the full contract for the project." He pointed to "reliance on partnership with the federal and provincial governments," expressing hope that "if the initial phase is successful, the project will be expanded to other governorates in Iraq."

Iraq and the UK discuss strengthening security cooperation
