New Orleans mother seeking answers in son's 2022 unsolved murder

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A New Orleans woman is seeking justice for her son, who was murdered almost two and a half years ago. 'It'll be three years, Aug. 27. Long as I don't have justice, no, I'm not going to be alright,' said Sharon August. New Orleans man killed in early Thursday morning crash in Ascension Parish Pain, heartbreak and desperation are what August feels daily as she looks for answers to her son's murder. 'I just ask God, give me the strength. I asked God to let me know who did. I need justice,' said August. According to police, on Aug. 22, 2022, they responded to a shooting on General Taylor Street around noon that claimed the life of 31-year-old Kevin August. Today, the only way she sees her son is by looking at photos. Since her son's murder, she has called the detectives daily. She wants more to be done in the case. 'It doesn't take two years. Every time I call the detective the voicemail is full. I can't leave a message, and I never get a phone call back. It's like they kicked me to the curb,' said August. Severe weather postpones Irish Channel Parade set to roll Saturday 'Every day, every week, every month that goes by, the trail gets colder and colder and people's memories, ' said Rafael Goyeneche with the Metropolitan Crime Commission. Goyneche explains during 2022, violent crime was escalating, and the number of officers was decreasing. He adds as cases get older, it takes something extraordinary for the police to be able to crack the case, but that doesn't mean that they're not trying. 'It can't just be a CrimeStoppers tip saying that so-and-so committed the murder that may give the police, a lead. It has to rise to the level of probable cause to arrest, arrest, and prove beyond a reasonable doubt to convict,' said Goyneche. August says she will continue to pray hoping the next time she gets a call from the police will be about the person who killed her son. 'Somebody needs to say something. Somebody saw something. A mama shouldn't have to bury her child, it should be the other. Kevin should have buried me, I'm the mama. I never thought I'd bury my child,' said August. The New Orleans Police Department says it is still looking into leads. Severe weather could impact whether Irish Channel Parade rolls

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Many have already marked their calendars for the Irish Channel Parade, but luck may not be on their side due to severe weather expected on Saturday, which is likely to push the parade back. 'Generally, if it was just rain. People wouldn't have an issue with that. We can all go outside and have fun and some showers, but it's a threat of severe weather. That's a bit more concerning. Severe storms roll through, we have to worry about people's safety,' said WGNO Meteorologist Carrigan Chauvin. Music, food lineup announced for 2025 French Quarter Festival Tracey's bar owner Jeffrey Carreras explains the parade is a great boost for business. 'Everybody wants to be Irish for a day. It's a big day for us. I mean, it's, you know, it's a fun day … We specifically, shortened the menu, corned beef, cabbage, roast beef po'boy what we are known for,' said Carreras. But with the parade's status up in the air, he says his only hope is to see the Irish celebration happen. 'You know, it'll happen. I don't think they're going to cancel it altogether. It's too much involved with this. Sunday, Monday is going to be a beautiful day. So St. Patrick's Day is actually Monday. So the 17th, hopefully, we get a good crowd for that,' said Carreras. Covington Celtic Club Parade rescheduled due to weather As officials with the Irish Channel Parade contemplate when the parade should roll there is a chance for the parade to go on, just on another day. 'Next weekend does look good if that's the time frame that they are looking at for rescheduling. The weekend following, like I said, we're going to see more and more of these setups next week. And following that could also be a little dicey outside given the time of year it is, situations like we're seeing this weekend will occur more often,' said Chauvin. Those with the Irish Channel Parade say if it rains they plan to walk, however with severe thunderstorms they'll reschedule.
