Sky is the limit for Noah Harris says Wicklow athletics chairperson

Tadhg Evans Wicklow People What were you doing in your leaving-cert year, aside from studying or pretending to study? In what is by no means a surprise, Parnell Athletics Club's Noah Harris has set a time worthy of appearing in next August's European Under-20 Championships in Finland. He did so at the Belfast Irish Milers meet last week, on his way to finishing fourth in the Men's International 3,000-metre race. His time of eight minutes and eight seconds was almost two seconds within the standard needed to appear in Tampere.

Ace day out as Aoife O'Connor completes hat-trick at the Louth Championships

That was despite the fact that a lot of the older Ace AC athletes did not attend as they were competing in Belfast at the Irish Milers meeting. Niamh Faulkner has been showing some fine form at training and she won the U15 200m in style to secure her first Louth title. Other sprinters to medal were Daniella Adebola (U19 200m gold) and U18 athlete Chloe Hanley who secured a 200m silver medal. Ace AC also collected many medals in the middle distance events. U14 contender Seamie Sheridan won silver in the 1500m, with his teammate Adam Cumming just behind in the bronze medal position. In the U16 age group Kate O'Donnell won gold in the 1500m, U15 Taylor Gregory also won his 1500m and the ever-improving duo of Liam Lynch and Killian Sheridan won silver and bronze respectively in the Boys U17 1500m. However, the Ace AC stars of the day were U16 all-rounders Aoife O'Connor and Naiya Semple, who won no fewer than five medals between them! Aoife won three silvers in the long and short distance hurdles, plus the javelin, while Naiya - who is just returning after injury - won silver in the long jump and bronze in the 200m. Caoimhe Carolan was second in the U13 long jump, while Brian O'Gorman also got an impressive second place in the Boys U17 long jump. Other athletes to impress on the day in Bush were Alphie Marron, Aibhlin Kelly and Farah Smith and Ace AC will be hoping for lots more success this coming Sunday on day two of the Louth Championships. At the Irish Milers event in Belfast there were some great performances and several PBs. U17 athlete Daniel Hanley ran in the 800m and finished with an impressive PB of 2:04, while Tadgh Forde Dunne continued his long-awaited comeback from injury and also got an 800m PB. In the U18 age group Rhys Clarke impressed again with a new 800m PB, as did Lorcan Forde Dunne in the 1500m with a time of 3:51. U19 contender Shea O'Donnell and senior athlete Danny Nugent both continued their good form as they set new PBs over the 1500m distance.

Drogheda & District AC's Aaron Hanlon on podium after stunning marathon debut in Belfast

The extraordinarily talented local primary school teacher said afterwards: 'The atmosphere was brilliant and the course just got tough between 25 to 30km where it was hilly and windy, but it was a fantastic experience.' Hanlon was modest about his efforts. There is no match for his ability and this race showed the discipline it takes to succeed. Hanlon was unlucky to have a stitch at the 30km mark but now holds the fastest marathon record in Drogheda & District AC and the expectation is that unless he breaks it himself, it will stand for a long time to come. Elsewhere, on Saturday, Colin Leonard was crowned Leinster road champion at the annual Athletics Leinster Championships. No one could catch Leonard in the 6K race which he completed in a very tidy 19:45. The Louth ladies team - comprising D&D duo Yasmin Canning and Mary Leech as well as Karen Costello of Dunleer AC placed third and Leech also won a category prize and felt good, finishing the tough 3K race in 11:28. Canning wasn't far behind, finishing in 12:09. Top of the pops at the Graded series round one at Morton Stadium, Ernesto Saborio won his 800m heat with a time of 2:06.03. Jimmy English performed very strongly at the 100m - running twice in a time of 12.60sec for both - as did Frank Cruise with an excellent 14.41sec. Kerry McHugh had a nice run too, completing the 800m in 3:22.24, and Sophie Kinsella brought her time down to 2:36.05 - very good running from both of them. Another Drogheda & District clubman, Chris Keenan, showed that he's race-fit with a solid run at the Irish Milers Mens' A 1500m, finishing with a good time of 4:04.41 for the metric mile.
