Man dies in horror Roscommon house fire as emergency services rush to the scene and Gardai conduct technical exam

A MAN has died following a house fire in Frenchpark in Co Roscommon last night. Gardai were alerted to the blaze at 7.15pm yesterday and rushed to the scene. Advertisement Emergency services battled the inferno and it was extinguished by fire crews. The cause of the fire is not yet know, however locals report hearing an explosion before the blaze broke out. Gardai have confirmed a man's body has been removed from the scene. The body has been transferred to University Hospital Galway where a postmortem will take place. Advertisement READ MORE IN NEWS The scene is now sealed for a technical examination. In a statement this morning Gardai said: "Gardai assisted fire services at a house fire in Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon yesterday evening Wednesday 18th June, 2025. "Gardai were made aware of the incident at 7.15pm. "The fire has been extinguished by fire services. DISGRACED former Bishop of Ferns Brendan Comiskey, who resigned amid a clerical sexual abuse scandal, has died aged 89. The Advertisement Comiskey resigned amid claims he failed to report allegations of sexual abuse against Fr Sean Fortune. The pedophile priest later took his own life while out on bail and Comiskey admitted while resigning he found Fr Fortune difficult to deal with. Resigning, Comiskey said: "Father Fortune committed very grave wrongs and hurt many people. "Despite the difficulties he presented in management terms, I should have adopted a more informed and more concerted approach to any dealings with him and for this I ask forgiveness.' Advertisement READ MORE IN NEWS Comiskey's resignation was also prompted by the airing of a A lawsuit against the Pope found over 100 abuse allegations against 21 priests as far back as 1962. The allegations prompted the publication of the Ferns Report, following an inquiry into the sexual abuse allegations. This report found that Comiskey had: "failed to recognise the paramount need to protect children, as a matter of urgency, from potential abusers." The former Bishop took a step back from public life after the series of bombshell revelations that left his name disgraced. Pope Francis addresses sex abuse claims at mass in Vatican City One of Fortune's victims was the advocate and former Director of Amnesty International Ireland, Colm O'Gorman, who subsequently founded the charity One in Four for victims of abuse. Reacting to news of Comiskey's death, O'Gorman said: 'The Ferns Report, published 20 yrs ago this October, sets out in stark and graphic terms, his record on clerical child sexual abuse." Advertisement 'At the Diocesan level, he oversaw the cover up of the rape and abuse of hundreds of children by priests operating under his authority as Bishop.' O'Gorman told how Comiskey managed the cover-up of sexual abuse with 'directives from the Vatican'. He said: 'I think people see the individual, the Bishop who behaved badly and orchestrated this cover-up. "But the reality of the situation is that Brendan Comiskey and every other Bishop who covered up child sexual abuse and moved priests did so at the direction of the Vatican.' Advertisement PRIOR CAREER Before his career in the Catholic Church met a disgraced end, Comiskey was ordained in 1961. This was done in the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. He was Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Dublin for a time, appointed in 1979. He was then appointed Bishop of Ferns in April 1984, where he remained until his resignation in 2002.
