Promote new Iban vocabulary for language growth, says Pasima president
Isa shows the 'Diksionari Salin English – Iban' (An English – Iban Translation Dictionary) which has the latest Iban vocabulary and the translations in English. KUCHING (May 7): The usage of newly-added words in the Iban vocabulary should be promoted to further elevate the growth of the language, said Persatuan Anak Seni Iban Malaysia (Pasima) president Isa Lee. He explained these new words include loanwords from English, such as 'Inspirasyen' (Inspiration) and 'Chempian' (Champion). Additionally, he noted that the vocabulary also includes rarely-utilised words, such as 'Jelekah' which means 'Attitude' and 'Lelemu' (knowledge gained from spiritual or religious practice). 'Radio stations, print media and song lyricists should take bold steps to introduce new vocabulary or words in the Iban language. 'This is to ensure the Iban language is moving forward and not stagnant. We should not be content with what we have now. These new words are added to enrich the language,' he said. Isa, who is a recording artiste, also advised Iban song lyricists to always refer to Iban dictionary or consult Iban language experts to ensure correct spelling and proper usage of words in their songs. He said this would help to avoid confusion, which could negatively impact the perception of Iban songs. 'Nevertheless, I would say that the quality of Iban songs have improved a lot in line with the changing times and trends. 'I still hope to see more variety in Iban songs such as R&B or jazz,' he added. On another note, Isa said the said his latest single, 'Sulu Aku Ambai Orang' (My Sweetheart Loves Another Person) has received very encouraging support since its release in March. He expressed gratitude to those who have supported him through the print, electronic and social media platforms. Iban vocabulary Isa Lee lead Persatuan Anak Seni Iban Malaysia
