49ers injury woes continue as key players return and others sidelined
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The injury list for the San Francisco 49ers went through a bit of a shuffle with a few key players returning from injuries Tuesday while significant questions remain on several others just a week before NFL rosters will be cut to 53 players. Starting cornerback Renardo Green was at practice for the first time since injuring his hamstring late last month and running back Isaac Guerendo returned after missing about two weeks with a shoulder injury. San Francisco got a handful of other players back on Tuesday who had missed less time with defensive linemen Nick Bosa, Jordan Elliott, Sam Okuayinonu and safety Jason Pinnock back. But the news wasn't all good with backup quarterback Mac Jones sidelined this week with a knee injury that is not expected to keep him out for the season opener and backup running back and special teams stalwart Patrick Taylor going down with a season-ending shoulder injury that landed him on injured reserve. With several other players still nursing injuries that are keeping them out of practice and putting their availability for Week 1 in question, planning the initial 53-man roster is a difficult proposition. 'It's a really complicated thing that we really can't talk about enough because it's always changing each day,' coach Kyle Shanahan said. 'It will be all the way up to when we make that decision.' The biggest questions appear to be at offensive line where left guard Ben Bartch (left elbow) and and right guard Dominick Puni (right guard) are out with injuries that could sideline them for Week 1 and at receiver where Jauan Jennings is still out with a calf injury. Jennings, who is also seeking a new contract, has been sidelined most of camp with a calf injury that also kept him out of the offseason program. The Niners need to get him back on the field soon if he is going to be ready for the opener on Sept. 7 in Seattle. 'Any player, not just Jauan or anyone, but people need to practice,' Shanahan said. 'They need to get ready to play an NFL season or you end up getting hurt. So, hopefully he can get his health back so he can get that out there and start practicing. Just running routes, doing things like that.' First-round rookie defensive end Mykel Williams was expected back this week but is still having issues with his knee so will be out at least another week. Rookie defensive tackle C.J. West is also out at least this week with a knee injury. Rookie nickelback Upton Stout didn't practice Tuesday because of a calf injury but could return soon. Several other players were also out Tuesday, including receiver Jordan Watkins; defensive backs Tre Brown, Richie Grant and Fabian Moreau; and running back Jordan James as injuries have once again been a major issue for San Francisco this summer. 'Obviously we have too many guys down,' Shanahan said. 'So we've got to look into all that stuff and figure out whatever we can do better.' With Jones unavailable for the preseason finale, the Niners brought back Nate Sudfeld on a one-year deal to take Taylor's place on the roster. Sudfeld spend the 2022 season in camp with San Francisco before getting beat out by Brock Purdy. With Purdy expected to sit out or play only a series or two on Saturday night, Shanahan needed another quarterback along with Carter Bradley to play against the Chargers. The 49ers will likely have several players on injured lists after cut-down day with receiver Brandon Aiyuk (knee) and safety Malik Mustapha (knee) expected to miss at least the first four games on the physically unable to perform list, and rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke (knee) slated to start the season on the non-football injury list. Defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (knee) still has been unable to practice all of camp and could open the season on the physically unable to perform list. Promising undrafted rookie running back Corey Kiner went down with a 'serious' high ankle sprain last week and is a candidate to start the season on short-term injured reserve along with defensive tackle Kevin Givens (pectoral). The Niners can put two players on IR next week who don't count on the 53-man roster and will be eligible to return after missing at least four weeks. ___ AP NFL:

49ers sign former 2nd-round pick RB as Christian McCaffrey injury insurance
The San Francisco 49ers need Christian McCaffrey to be healthy. In order to bounce back from a rough 2024 season, an injury-free campaign from CMC is paramount. Last year, the 49ers struggled all year, and it's in large part because McCaffrey missed almost the entire campaign with two separate and serious injuries. Despite that, San Francisco let its running back depth chart get thinned out this offseason. They traded Jordan Mason to the Vikings. That left second-year back Isaac Guerendo as the main backup to McCaffrey. They also have Patrick Taylor and fifth-round rookie Jordan James. But this week, the 49ers have added to the mix. San Francisco signed Ameer Abdullah, according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. MORE: Joe Burrow shares honest feelings on Trey Hendrickson's contract situation Abdullah is one of the oldest running backs in the league, at 32, but he has a strong pedigree. Abdullah was once a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in 2015. Since then, Abdullah has suited up for the Vikings, Panthers and Raiders after leaving Detroit. Overall, Abdullah has played in 141 NFL games, including 26 starts. Last season with Vegas, Abdullah ran for 311 yards and two touchdowns and caught 40 passes for 261 yards and three more scores. At this point in his career, Abdullah is still an occasional dual-threat out of the backfield. He also has some history with playing on special teams. The 49ers hope they don't need to figure out how much Abdullah has left in the tank, but he's a worthwhile signing at this point in the summer, just in case. 2025 NFC West RB duo rankings
See how the four RB duos in the NFC West stack up against each other entering the 2025 season. It is the time of the offseason, as we have done for years here on Cards Wire, where we go through each position and rank players and position groups in the NFC West. We continue by looking at the top running back duos for the Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. Not much has changed since last season. The only difference from the start of last season is that the 49ers now have Isaac Guerendo as the primary backup running back instead of Elijah Mitchell or Jordan Mason. 1. 49ers: Christian McCaffrey, Isaac Guerendo Based on our starting running back and backup running back rankings, this makes sense. McCaffrey is the top starting back in the division, assuming he has recovered fully from last season's injuries. Guerendo is the top backup, too. With the top starter and top backup, combined with probably the best running scheme in the league, this makes sense. 2. Cardinals: James Conner, Trey Benson Conner was third in the starting RB rankings we did behind the Rams' Kyren Williams, but it wasn't by much. He is been a more dynamic and efficient runner than Williams but not as productive. Benson is No. 3 in backups but has starter potential and his production late in the season gives the Cardinals a pairing very similar to the Niners. 3. Seahawks: Kenneth Walker III, Zach Charbonnet Walker was the lowest-ranked starter but Charbonnet was No. 2 as a backup. Both are productive in the run game and passing game. 4. Rams: Kyren Williams, Blake Corum Williams had nearly 1,300 yards and rushed for 14 scores but Corum had the lowest rushing production and per-carry average of all the backups. The Rams' rushing attack was more workhorse than explosive. Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. 2025 NFC West RB rankings: Stacking up the backup RBs in the division
See how the four backup RBs in the NFC West stack up against each other entering the 2025 season. It is the time of the offseason, as we have done for years here on Cards Wire, where we go through each position and rank players and position groups in the NFC West. We continue by looking at the four starting primary backup running backs for the Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. All four guys are the same as how the season ended last year. Let's see how they stack up against one another. 1. Isaac Guerendo, 49ers Guerendo was back on the depth chart but ended up as a starter. He had games with 99, 85 and 78 yards. While of the four backups in the division, he is the one who would probably make the worst RB1, he is a perfect complement to Christian McCaffrey. 2. Zach Charbonnet, Seahawks He started six games last season have had over 50 yards in five of them, including one game of 134 and another with 91. He also had 42 receptions for 340 yards, gaining a total of 909 yards from scrimmage with nine total touchdowns. 3. Trey Benson, Cardinals Benson expects a bigger role in his second season. He started slowly and looked like a rookie. By the end of the year, he rushed for 291 yards and a touchdown, averaging 4.6 yards per attempt. He believes he and James Conner can pair up as a two RB1s in the offense. He has the makings of a big play back who could also be a workhorse, but he hasn't accomplished yet what Charbonnet has. 4. Blake Corum, Rams In limited action, he had 207 yards on 3.7 yards per carry. He was not particularly efficient and seems to have the least upside of the four division backups.
