Packers Could Cut 3x Super Bowl Champion Following Brutal Preseason Showing
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The usual case for teams during training camp and preseason is to test out rookie players to see if they need development, are ready to start, or will be cut when the 53-man roster decisions come about. That does not mean that veterans are absolved of these tests as well, and that is certainly the case for the Green Bay Packers. More news: Browns Urged to Cut Shocking Quarterback in Big Training Camp Move The Packers usually have a stacked wide receiver room, and the 2025 season will be the same. With a room that includes Jayden Reed, Matthew Golden, Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, and Dontayvion Wicks, the team has some solid weapons and backups. Green Bay also has multi-Super Bowl champion Mecole Hardman on the roster. The issue is Hardman was used sparingly by the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Packers might view him as a cut candidate. MoreMore news: Vikings Questionable Quarterback Situation Hit With Brutal Ranking Following a brutal preseason showing, Hardman is also being pegged as a cut candidate by Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport. "Based on his performance in Green Bay's preseason opener, though, Hardman could start the 2025 season looking for work. After a performance that included a key drop and a muffed punt, the 27-year-old told reporters he wasn't going to let one shaky outing rattle him. 'It's short-term memory,' he said. 'Windshield wipers. You've got to clear out the fog and come in this week with a better mindset. A better mentality of going out there and getting better.' But Hardman has never come especially close to living up to his draft slot. And on a Packers team loaded with young talent at wide receiver, he has no margin to make the sort of errors he made in his Green Bay debut." Hardman, already being an underutilized wide receiver, is bad enough, but dropping a key pass and muffing a punt is not going to help his case at all. He is currently third on the depth chart, and he may not even carve out a role on special teams. The Packers having a lot of offensive weapons for Jordan Love to dish the ball to, and when Watkins returns from injury, there might not be space for Hardman. Then again, he might stay on the roster simply as injury insurance for the team. For more on the Packers and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

Recently waived 49ers WR signs with new team
The San Francisco 49ers have been forced to make frequent transactions early in training camp due to injuries, allowing some talented players to be exposed to waivers and free agency, including wide receiver Isaiah Neyor. San Francisco waived Neyor as part of their 10 transactions before Monday's training camp session, and while he went unclaimed on Tuesday, he opted to sign a deal with the Green Bay Packers. The 24-year-old was a two-star recruit out of Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas, before beginning his collegiate career at Wyoming where he earned All-Mountain West in his third year there. In 2022, Neyor transferred to Texas, and two years he later, he made his way to Nebraska. In his six years between three schools, Neyor appeared in 33 games and caught 87 passes for 1,595 yards and 17 touchdowns. His best single year came in Wyoming in 2021, when he recorded 44 receptions for 870 yards and a conference-leading 12 touchdowns. Now, Neyor will get an opportunity to compete for a depth spot in a talented receiver room that also includes 2025 first-round pick Matthew Golden, Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Mecole Hardman and more. It's unclear if the 49ers had interest in bringing Neyor back, but if they did, they didn't act fast enough or show enough interest to get him in the building again. Now, their wide receiver room is 12 deep, including Brandon Aiyuk (PUP), Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, Jordan Watkins, Demarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowing, Russell Gage, Terique Owens, Junior Bergen, Isaiah Hodgins, Robbie Chosen and Equanimeous St. Brown. It would've been tough for Neyor to crack San Francisco's 53-man roster at wideout, but he could've been in play for a practice squad spot had he made it through the rest of training camp and the preseason article originally appeared on Niners Wire: WR Isaiah Neyor lands with Packers after release from 49ers

49ers undrafted 'freak' WR wows in training camp with spectacular catch
The San Francisco 49ers need a break at wide receiver. Thursday's practice provided some optimism that they may have one coming. Undrafted rookie wide receiver Isaiah Neyor has all of the tools to be an effective player in the NFL. Pre-draft he measured in at 6-4, 218 pounds and blew every workout he did out of the water. 49ers veteran tight end George Kittle only needed a couple of OTAs before calling Neyor a 'freak' in a podcast appearance. The UDFA didn't take long to make his mark in his first NFL training camp. He made a spectacular grab in the team's second day of camp that drew plenty of praise on social media. NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco described the reception on Twitter: The play of this 49ers camp (in two days) and, perhaps, many past camps: Isaiah Neyor makes an acrobatic, sprawling catch from Mac Jones 50 yards down the field. Jason Pinnock, Dallis Flowers and Darrell Luter were in tight coverage. A tumultuous college career led to limited production at three programs across six years. He wound up playing 33 games and hauling in 87 catches for 1,595 yards and 17 touchdowns. The challenge for Neyor in camp was going to be making enough noise to work his way into the conversation for a roster spot. His reps will be relatively limited and he's entering his first camp at the back of the depth chart. Injuries around the top of the receiving corps have opened up opportunities for more looks, and Neyor took full advantage Thursday. Making catches like the one Maiocco described will help him get on the map. Continuing to climb the depth chart will mean providing more consistency where circus catches aren't all he article originally appeared on Niners Wire: 49ers UDFA Isaiah Neyor makes incredible catch in training camp

George Kittle Raves About Nebraska Alums on the 49ers roster
George Kittle Raves About Nebraska Alums on the 49ers roster originally appeared on Athlon Sports. San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle may be a University of Iowa alum; however, that hasn't stopped him from giving major credit to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. During an appearance on the Bussin with the Boys Podcast , Kittle heaped high praise on the former Nebraska playerd whom he now shares a locker room. I have two Nebraska players on my team for the first time in a couple of years," Kittle said. "Luke Gifford, love that guy." He has also had some high praise for undrafted wide receiver and Husker standout Isaiah Neyor. "I watched him. He was running a route, and he got, like, nine and a half yards in two strides. I was like, 'Holy S__.' It was insane. We watched it like 10 times as a tight end room. We're like, 'How is he doing this?" Kittle said. He goes on to say that he believes that the Husker standout can possibly crack the 49ers rotation next season. "I mean, if you're that tall, just make plays and do well on special teams; at the bare minimum, he should make the practice squad," Kittle added. Kittle continued to heap high praise on Nebraska football. "Football is also better when Nebraska is good and it is," Kittle said. He went on to praise Memorial Stadium, stating it was "one of his favorite stadiums" he has played in. He added, "It is like an NFL stadium in college," Kittle said of Memorial Stadium. "That's why I like it. It's tall. It's a great stadium." Neyor, who transferred to Nebraska from Wyoming, spent five years in college. While he wasn't too productive, finishing his collegiate career with 87 catches. He has also caught 17 touchdown passes and averaged a whopping 18.3 yards per catch. Though he went undrafted, he has shown flashes of being a productive receiver and should carry on if he gets a shot in the NFL.
