Report – Inter Milan Set Sights On Towering Atalanta Defender & Compile Three-Man Backup List
Inter Milan have identified Atalanta star Isak Hien as an ideal defensive reinforcement for the summer transfer window. According to Tuttosport via FCInterNews, Inter chiefs will pay close attention to Hien's performance tonight. Simone Inzaghi will be able to observe Hien first-hand when Atalanta take on his Inter side this evening. Indeed, Hien will face a formidable challenge in Bergamo. Gian Piero Gasperini must rely on the Swedish ace to contend with Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez. Therefore, this fixture could be a perfect audition for the ex-Hellas Verona defender. Hien isn't the only defender on Inter's radar. Udinese's Jaka Bijol has been on the club's shortlist for almost a year, though negotiations have never taken off. Meanwhile, Bologna's Sam Beukema is also an exciting prospect for the Nerazzurri. Finally, Koni De Winter has caught Beppe Marotta's eye amid a phenomenal season at Genoa. However, Hien will likely be Inter's priority in the upcoming transfer window.

Four Serie A Defenders Top Inter Milan Summer Shortlist To Replace Acerbi & De Vrij
Isak Hien, Jaka Bijol, Sam Beukema, and Mario Gila are all targets for Inter Milan in defense next summer transfer window. This according to today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They name the quartet as prospective replacements for Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi. Inter Milan are having to think about the future in defense. At the moment, Francesco Acerbi and Stefan de Vrij remain important players at the back for the Nerazzurri. However, they turned 37 and 33 respectively this season. That means that Inter can hardly rely on either for much into the future. Therefore, Inter will be thinking about long-term replacements for the veteran duo. Naturally, Inter Milan will seek a defender with a similar profile to de Vrij and Acerbi. That will mean a defender who is tall and physically strong. Inter want someone who can mark centre-forwards and clean up in the penalty area. Moreover, Serie A experience would naturally be an asset. And according to the Corriere, there are four names in particular on the Nerazzurri's shortlist. There would be Atalanta defender Isak Hien, already familiar with playing in a back three.

Gasperini: ‘Atalanta need to be optimistic' in Champions League
Gian Piero Gasperini feels Atalanta 'need to be optimistic' in the Champions League play-off against Club Brugge after their controversial defeat and reveals Ademola Lookman's condition. It kicks off at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo at 20.00 GMT. You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from this game and Milan-Feyenoord on the Liveblog. La Dea were fairly content to settle for a 1-1 draw in the first leg, but ended up losing 2-1 thanks to a comically soft penalty awarded in stoppages for Isak Hien placing his arm across Gustaf Nilsson. That means they need to win by one clear goal tonight to force extra time in this play-off and get a victory by more than that for access to the Round of 16. 'This is the Champions League, we need to be optimistic because there are two legs, home and away,' Gasperini told Sky Sport Italia. 'In the old days, a 2-1 away defeat was a decent result, but it is much less now with the away goals rule gone. In order to go through, we simply have to win. 'Club Brugge play with sharpness, technique and pace, so we must do better than in the first leg, even if the result didn't really reflect how many chances we created. It will be difficult for us, but also for them.' The injury crisis continues to intensify for Atalanta, who are missing Isak Hien, Daniel Maldini, former Brugge defender Odilon Kossounou, Gianluca Scamacca and Giorgio Scalvini. At least Sead Kolasinac returns to the starting XI and Lookman is back on the bench after several weeks out. 'It has not been a fortunate time for us in terms of results and incidents, many of them really obvious incidents, not to say extremely controversial, but we have to keep going and give our best,' continued Gasperini. 'This is our 39th game of the season, already six more than at this stage last year, so little injuries will happen. Lookman could've potentially started, I made a different choice. We can only hope for the best.'

CdS: Atalanta penalty incident highlights need to rethink VAR protocol
Italian sports outlets echoed Atalanta's indignation at the controversial late penalty call that sealed their fate against Club Brugge in the Champions League, with Corriere dello Sport highlighting how the decision exposed the clear limitations in the way VAR is currently being used. Referee Umut Meler awarded the hosts a penalty in injury time for the softest of contacts between La Dea's centre-back Isak Hien and Gustaf Nilsson, sparking disbelief and fury from the visitors. The Italian paper criticised the refereeing team, claiming that the VAR could have corrected the unfair decision in 'half a second', an 'injustice' that was only doubled afterward, as footage clearly showed Club Brugge's forward collapsing to the ground without justification. 'The venom in the closing stages of a match that demonstrated, once again, the urgency and need to rethink the VAR protocol, which is proving inadequate,' Corriere dello Sport wrote. 'As happened at San Siro on Monday, as happened in Empoli on Saturday, as happened last night in Bruges: it would have taken just half a second for the men at the monitor to correct an injustice, which instead, in hindsight, becomes double.' Cds went on to wish a lengthy suspension for the referee: 'As for referee Meler, he can go ahead and book a long vacation in the coming months,' it reads. 'Seeing him on the field again would indeed be worse than his mistake.' Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini also expressed his frustration with the decision, claiming that 'football is becoming a completely different sport.'
