Kate Hudson says being called 'rom-com queen' gives her "mixed feelings"

Hollywood star Kate Hudson, who is known for her roles in romantic comedies like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, You, Me and Dupree, and Bride Wars, is happy being called "rom-com queen," but she wants to explore more as an actor. "It's a mixed feeling because -- now that I'm older I love it," said Hudson, who appeared on the Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce podcast for promoting her film Running Point, reported People. She added, "I think what happens when you have a very successful rom-com, it sort of becomes what people expect from you and want from you, and as an actor you're sort of like, 'Yeah, but I want to do a million different things.' " Hudson rose to fame with her portrayal of Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe's musical drama Almost Famous (2000), for which she won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and received an Oscar nomination in the same category. She went on to star in rom-com movies and gained popularity. "As Hollywood goes, they love to put you in a box. They love it. And so I think when you're younger, you don't want to be pigeonholed into an idea that that's what you do. And the second you have success in a rom-com as a woman, it's like they just want you in that," shared Hudson, adding, "So it's like you love it, and then at the same time you're like, 'Yeah, but I want to do other things. I don't want to just do this all the time'," she said. Although she became successful in one genre, she never stopped herself from exploring different career options. With her 2024 debut album, Glorious, she proved her talent in music as well. She said, "pursuing music took a very far back seat to what was happening in my career" when she first found success in acting, according to the outlet. In Running Point, Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, the newly appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball franchise. Being thrown into the job after a scandal forces her brother (Justin Theroux) to resign, Kate's character has to work on proving to her sceptical family, board members, and the sports community that she is the perfect fit for the job. "It's not just all about romance," she added in that interview, sharing that a lack of emphasis on her character Isla Gordon's love life was "one of the big things for me" that convinced her to join the series, according to People.

Netflix renews Running Point for season 2 just one week after premiere

Netflix has officially renewed Running Point for a second season, just a week after its premiere on February 27. The streaming platform announced the renewal on its official social accounts. Series lead Kate Hudson, who stars as Isla Gordon, shared the news in a video message, thanking viewers for their support. 'A good basketball team owner knows when to listen to the fans. So we hear you, and so did Netflix,' she said. 'Running Point is officially coming back for Season 2! Thank you so much to everyone who watched the show so far! You're really the reason why we're able to come back and do another season.' The comedy series follows Isla Gordon, the daughter of a legendary pro basketball team owner. After a scandal forces her brother to step down as team president, Isla is unexpectedly promoted to the role. Facing skepticism from her family, the board, and the sports world, she must prove she was the right choice for the job. Alongside Hudson, the ensemble cast includes Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Jay Ellis, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Max Greenfield, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Roberto Sanchez, Uche Agada, Dane DiLiegro, and Justin Theroux. Running Point is created by Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen, who also serve as executive producers. Stassen is the showrunner. Hudson executive produces in addition to starring, while Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss and special projects manager Linda Rambis are also part of the executive team. Warner Bros. Television, through Kaling's Kaling International banner, produces the series. The rapid renewal highlights the strong reception of Running Point, reinforcing Netflix's commitment to fresh, sports-themed comedy content.

I might not be able to stop myself watching Netflix's new comedy

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. When you're constantly trying to cement your place atop the pile of the best streaming services on the market, in a brutal war to retain subscribers, sometimes you need new series that offer broad appeal, rather than just niche indie hits. That would certainly be the rationale I'd assume on Netflix's behalf when it comes to Running Point. The new show, which recently got its first full trailer and will drop on Netflix on 27 February, in a couple of weeks' time, looks like an all-family comedy, with elements that should appeal to a wide range of audiences. It has slapstick comedy and workplace drama, but also is grounded in the world of elite sports, to make things stick. In fact, in its story of an unassuming person taking charge of a huge sporting institution, it rings more than a little like Apple TV+'s hit Ted Lasso, although the comparison doesn't hold that much water. For one thing, Running Point is set in LA against the backdrop of the NBA, and it has much less of a fish-out-of-water theme. The show will see Kate Hudson play Isla Gordon, the odd fish of a family that owns the biggest NBA team in the region, the LA Waves (clearly a stand-in for the real-world Lakers). When an accident befalls another family member, she's named as the person to lead the franchise, despite the wishes of her cantankerous brothers. Image 1 of 6 Image 2 of 6 Image 3 of 6 Image 4 of 6 Image 5 of 6 Image 6 of 6 As a woman in a hugely male-dominated sector, expect plenty of fireworks as she pushes back against patriarchal norms, but this is a comedy series (from Mindy Kaling, no less), so it should all be light-hearted. There will clearly also be some romantic sub-plots, not least between Isla and her franchise's hunky head coach, even as his on-field performance takes a nosedive. Of course, this sort of crowd-pleasing series can go one of two ways, and we won't really get a sense of how well it's written until it arrives. It could be a bit lightweight, but the last few decades have repeatedly proven that hit comedy series don't need to be serious to find potentially massive audiences. Netflix will certainly be hoping that Running Point can manage that.
