Tsunami Alert Issued for Hawaii, Alaska, With Evacuations Underway after Massive 8.8 Magnitude Quake Strikes Off Russia
A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck the northern Pacific Ocean on Tuesday evening, triggering tsunami warnings across Hawaii, sections of Alaska, and the West Coast, after the first tsunami waves had already reached parts of Japan and Russia. The earthquake hit an area 74 miles east of Kamchatsky, along the southeastern coastline of Russia's Pacific peninsula, at 1:24 p.m. Hawaiian Time. It struck 11 miles underground and triggered widespread tsunami alerts across the region. Several aftershocks followed, with magnitudes as high as 6.9. People in Honolulu are being advised to evacuate to elevated areas, as the waves caused by the earthquake are expected to arrive in Hawaii at 7:17 p.m. On High Alert Tsunami alert in Hawaii and Alaska after 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit off Russia X Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on O'ahu has opened sections of its access roads to help residents reach higher elevations, according to a post from the base on X. Governor Josh Green called on Hawaiians to stay calm and leave coastal areas if necessary. He reassured the public by noting that no lives were lost during the 2011 tsunami, which brought waves as high as seven feet, during a press conference. Dr. Chip McCreery, a tsunami specialist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, shared an early outlook on the potential impact the islands might face. "This is not a small threat, this is the kind of threat where the water could flood the land," McCreery told local Island News Tuesday. "The models are showing in some places tsunami amplitudes of roughly 10 feet above normal sea level." "But for those of you who watch the surf normally a 10-foot surf wave is good for surfers... but a 10-foot tsunami is quite different," McCreery explained. "What that means, it's like all of sea level will rise to 10 feet above normal sea level and stay high like that for maybe five, 10 minutes before it goes back down." "It will affect all the coasts within the state," warning there could be "multiple floodings" of the islands that could last for hours. Alaska in Danger Tsunami alert X A tsunami alert has also been issued for Alaska's Aleutian Islands. Some areas along the state's mainland coast are under a more severe tsunami warning, while other sections are currently under a lower-level tsunami watch. Waves are forecast to arrive in parts of Alaska by 4:46 p.m. local time, according to Fox Weather. The Pacific Coast—covering California, Washington, and Oregon—is also under a tsunami watch, with waves projected to reach northern areas around 11:40 p.m., and southern California roughly an hour afterward, according to reports. The National Weather Service later elevated the status for Los Angeles, placing the city under a more urgent tsunami advisory. "The Tsunami should arrive near 1AM tonight. If you are located in the coastal area, move off the beach & out of harbors & marina. Do not go to the coast to watch," National Weather Service Los Angeles warned in a post to X. "Be alert to instructions from local EM officials." Coastal areas of California have also been put under a tsunami watch. President Trump addressed the developing and potentially disastrous situation through a message on social media. "Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii," the president wrote on X. "A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way," Trump wrote, adding. "STAY STRONG AND STAY SAFE!"

Hawaii Men Sentenced for Abducting, Killing Beloved Pet Pig to Cheat in Hunting Contest
Two Hawaii men were sentenced to one night in jail after abducting and killing a beloved pet pig from an animal sanctuary in order to win a hunting contest. Prosecutors charged Jayden Jarnesky Magana, 18, and Krys-Ryan Saito Carino, 20, with first-degree animal cruelty, theft of livestock and criminal property damage for the theft and killing of 'Eddie,' a beloved pet pig from Kitty Charm Farm in Maui, according to Hawaii News Now, Island News and KHON2 News, who cited authorities. Authorities said the men stole Eddie and took a fake Instagram video on May 11, 2024 of them hunting the pig, killing him, gutting him and hanging him from a tree. According to the outlets, the 250-pound deceased pet was then entered into a feral pig hunting competition, in which the two men won $1,000 cash. Both men entered no contest pleas and were ordered to serve one night in jail on Wednesday, even though Jarnesky-Magana faced up to 10 years, Hawaii News Now reported. Jarnesky Magana was also sentenced to four years of probation, according to the outlet. Eddie's owner, animal rescuer Sarah Haynes, told Island News that she felt 'numb' among a mix of other emotions as she cried upon hearing about the men's sentences. "Children could hug him. We swam in his pool with him. He was my treasured pet, a therapy pet to many," Haynes said to the outlet. The courthouse was crowded with about three dozen people who held up signs for Eddie and shouted 'no excuse for animal abuse' and 'protect our pets,' according to Hawaii News Magana didn't address the court, but was visibly crying while he had his attorney, Wendy Hudson, read a letter aloud for the judge, the local outlets said. 'I believe that community service will be a better option for me as it will show my love and support for the community, and it will help me as I'm still learning how to do things... I am very sorry, please forgive me." Haynes told KHON2 that the strict release conditions on Jarnesky Magana provided her some solace. 'He can't hunt, he can't own animals. So there is a very strict probation, and I'm really happy with that,' Haynes said to the outlet. 'My hope is that this has been scary enough for him that he'll make a change and also that other people hear about it.' Read the original article on People

Doctor Accused of Trying to Push Wife Off Scenic Hawaii Cliff Charged With Attempted Murder, Bail Set at $5 Million
A doctor in Hawaii who was arrested this week has been charged with second-degree attempted murder after allegedly trying to push his wife off a cliff in Hawaii, Honolulu police said. The 36-year-old woman, who has not been publicly named, survived the March 24 attack at a famous scenic spot in Oahu, Hawaii, but remains in critical condition. Her husband, 46-year-old Gerhardt Konig, initially fled the scene but was arrested later in the evening, the Honolulu Police Department previously said in a statement. He was charged with second-degree attempted murder, police said in an update on Wednesday, March 26. Bail was set at $5 million. Konig is expected to make his first court appearance on Thursday, Island News reports. His attorney, Myles Breiner, told the outlet his client does not have a criminal history. "Why he did this? That's a mystery... he has nothing on his record here or anywhere else he's ever lived in," Breiner told Island News. "So it's rather surprising that out of nowhere, he would engage in this kind of behavior." PEOPLE has also reached out to Konig's attorney for comment. Honolulu police found the woman on a hiking trail after they received a report of a man beating a woman, per their initial statement. The victim alleged to police that Konig, her husband, tried to throw her off the trail before striking her in the head several times with a rock. It wasn't immediately clear who reported the attack, but police say there were two witnesses who also called 911. Konig allegedly attacked his wife because she refused to take a picture with him, Hawaii News Now reported, citing police. The woman suffered multiple injuries to her head and face, according to the Honolulu Emergency Services. Pro surfer Makai McNamara placed in medically induced coma following terrifying wipeout
A group of surfers, lifeguards, and other concerned individuals recently gathered around American pro surfer Makai McNamara after he was knocked unconscious. McNamara was wiped out by a massive wave at Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii, which is widely considered one of the world's most dangerous surf breaks. According to Island News, McNamara was a frequent Banzai Pipeline visitor and was hit by the large wave this past Sunday. The aforementioned group of responders helped McNamara reach safety on the shore. Eli Olson, who also surfs professionally and is described as a friend of McNamara, said the ordeal was a "freak accident." "It was just a bad wave, kind of a freak accident, and he went head first into the reef," Olson told Island News. He also described McNamara as "one of the best [surfers] out there." Olson estimated McNamara was underwater for two minutes before anyone was able to reach him. He also noted that responders attempted "CPR compressions" during the rescue. "He was underwater for close to two minutes before I got to him. First thing, I just wanted to like keep his head above water so he didn't take more water in," Olson said. "I gave him a couple [of] breaths. Try to give him a couple [of] compressions." He added, "We're getting hit by waves out here. We're getting kind of recycled in the waves and then we got him in life first, did another round of CPR compressions, and he started coughing up water." McNamara was able to eventually regain consciousness when he was "brought him back to life on the sand," Surfer reported. McNamara was later transported to a local hospital where medical personnel placed him in an induced coma for three days. McNamara's father Liam provided an update on his son's status 24 hours after the harrowing incident. "It's been 24 hours since the incident, and he's on his road to recovery," he said in a video posted to Instagram. "He feels your energy. He feels your love. He feels your positive vibes, and we appreciate each and every one of you for your support." "I thank the lifeguards and everybody who helped, so many people. Thank you so much for helping save my son," Liam continued. "The next two days he'll be here in the hospital, and we just need the continued prayers and positive energy," he added. "Makai's a strong young man, and he's going to get through this." Meanwhile, Olson described the rescue as a "team effort" and expressed his hopes that Mcnamara makes a "full recovery." "All that matters is Makai makes a full recovery and we can laugh and share waves with him soon," Olson noted via Instagram Stories.
