Anerley Park revived as Killarney residents reclaim public space
Anerley Park, in Killarney, has quietly transformed from a neglected, overgrown patch of land into a vibrant green space, thanks to a group of dedicated residents who refused to let it fade away.
After its original palisade fence was stolen during Covid-19, the park became vulnerable. It soon attracted vagrants, the grass grew wild, and municipal maintenance dwindled. Residents watched as a once-inviting space fell into disrepair.

Instead of giving up, a few neighbours began clearing the park. They trimmed grass, removed litter, and planted small gardens, slowly bringing life back to the area. Bradley Kirton, one of the volunteers, said the idea of installing a proper fence soon followed.
He reached out to Cochrane Clearvu Fencing, who generously sponsored the new fence, marking a turning point in securing the space and protecting the community's efforts.
What started as a simple clean-up, turned into a full community restoration. More green areas have been beautified, and early garden beds are now in bloom.
Resident Ismail Randeree believes the changes go beyond appearance. He said the community's presence in the park discourages misuse, simply by showing that the space is cared for.
Their goal is to keep Anerley Park in line with the standards of the wider Killarney area… Safe, clean, and welcoming for all.
