'Prisoner 24': Hamas releases footage of alleged wounded Israeli hostage

Hamas releases video of reportedly Maxim Herkin, Times of Israel reported (Image Credit: X) The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades , Hamas's military division, released footage on Saturday depicting what seemed to be an Israeli captive who sustained injuries during a Gaza strike. The unverified four-minute recording shows a person with bandages covering his head and left arm, who identified himself as "Prisoner 24". Speaking Hebrew with a Russian inflection, he indicated he had been wounded in a recent Israeli attack. The footage, showing the individual on the ground, referenced the Israeli Independence Day celebrations on Thursday, suggesting recent filming. His message aligned with previous hostage videos from the organisation, requesting public pressure on Israeli authorities for the release of remaining captives. Hamas claims that he was in a tunnel allegedly targeted in an Israeli airstrike. Government hostage pointman Gal Hirsch had spoken with the family of Herkin. According to Hirsch's office, the parents implored that Israeli news outlets not air the video of their son. The militant group continues to hold 58 hostages captured during their October 2023 assault on Israel. Military officials confirm 34 are deceased. Additionally, Hamas possesses the remains of an Israeli soldier who died in a 2014 Gaza conflict. The Hamas incursion resulted in 1,218 fatalities on the Israeli side, predominantly civilians, according to AFP calculations using official data. A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on January 19, substantially reducing over 15 months of conflict. Israel recommenced significant operations throughout Gaza on March 18 following an impasse regarding ceasefire progression. Israeli authorities state their renewed campaign aims to secure the release of remaining captives, though critics suggest this approach endangers their lives. Hamas has distributed multiple hostage videos since the truce ended. These recent images emerge as mediator efforts for a new ceasefire have reached an impasse.

Windsor students learn different jobs in medical field

WINDSOR, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – UHS workers from a variety of departments were at Windsor High School, giving students hands-on practice with different jobs in the medical field. UHS personnel set up five stations throughout the school for the students to rotate through. Including lab services, nurse education, respiratory therapy, medical technology, and surgical techs. With the surgeons, students got to perform a mock surgery on someone's stomach, while another station included a breathing pig lung. One senior, Leigha Bloom, is looking to become a prenatal nurse and was accepted into the nursing program at SUNY Broome. 'Cause there's just so many different fields. So, if somebody was looking to go into health care and didn't know exactly what they wanted to do, today really let you know all these different options that you really do have. It's not just the one's that are most popular like nursing or being a doctor. There's so many more opportunities for everybody else to have,' Bloom said. At each station, the UHS workers described their jobs and the required schooling. Students also got to try on scrubs and get dressed as if they were going to perform a surgery. Brookside students get their hands dirty in the garden with CCE

SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Cornell Cooperative Extension was teaching elementary students how to get their hands dirty, and start their own garden. CCE met with several classrooms at Susquehanna Valley's Brookside Elementary to give a lesson on growing plants. Two years ago, CCE helped build the wooden garden beds that the classes are using. The initiative is part of CE's farm-to-school program, focused on teaching students where our food comes from. Before planting, each student got to try a bite of fresh spinach and arugula.A 4th grader, Robert Carangelo, had never gardened before, but says he had a blast. 'And I've never tried gardening before. So, when I go home, I'm going to ask my family to start a garden. Probably potatoes, strawberries, mangos, and apples,' Carangelo said. The students were taught how to properly space the plants around one foot apart. Every student dug their own hole and planted it themselves. Binghamton students celebrate Israeli Independence Day

BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY (WIVT/WBGH) – Local college students held a celebration yesterday in honor of Israeli Independence Day. Binghamton University's Hillel commemorated 77 years of Israeli Independence with carnival games, prizes, and even some Israeli food. Following the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack and the ensuing war in Gaza, many Jewish students say these have been challenging times. Hillel's Vice President of Programming, Ellie Spivak, says that celebrating this holiday amidst the war has a deeper meaning. 'This event is very significant, especially now. It's been a very hard time the past two years since October 7th. So it's really important for us to come together today and remember that we are also here to celebrate. We have hard times and we have happy times as well,' Spivak said. The celebration comes the day after another annual remembrance day in which Jews honor fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism. Spivak says Israeli Independence Day is a demonstration of light amid the darkness. SUNY Broome simulates disaster scenarios with local EMS

TOWN OF DICKINSON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Controlled chaos on SUNY Broome's campus today, as several programs and local EMS teamed up to create a realistic version of a tragic accident. Over 300 students participated in the mock accident, acting as victims, triage officers, law enforcement, and others. In the fictional scenario, a group of friends were hosting a graduation party when a car drove into a crowd, killing and injuring several people. The mock accident is a chance for students to experience what a real emergency might feel like, everything from the blood to people screaming. One student involved Ayden Doolittle, was playing a Public Information Officer, and we interviewed him amidst the chaos. 'We've got everybody from nurses, to EMS workers, to law enforcement. So, there's a lot of people here that have never seen anything like this. This is a very big situation, and especially with all of the noise that's going around. We've got people screaming, we've got birthing mothers, we've got even news here, trying to talk to us, it's a lot, and it's going to be a lot of pressure on everybody,' Doolittle said. Before the event started, SUNY Broome made several announcements to the surrounding community that the noise and sirens were a planned drill. This is the college's 10th mock disaster.
