At least five killed in 'intense' Russian strikes on Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions
At least five people have been killed and 13 injured in Russian strikes overnight on Tuesday that targeted the Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions, days before US President Donald Trump's deadline for Moscow to agree to a truce or face additional tariffs expires. One person was killed in a strike targeting the city of Lozova in the Kharkiv region that hit critical infrastructure, including high-rise buildings and a residential area, the city's mayor said, calling it the "most intense attack" on the town since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion in early 2022. "Sadly, people have been injured, including two children. Rescue workers, medics and emergency services are working at the scene. We are documenting the consequences," Serhii Zelenskyi said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched a ballistic missile and nearly 50 UAVs against Ukraine, the majority of which were Iranian-made Shaheds and their Russian equivalents. More than 25 hit Lozova in eastern Ukraine, he added. The strikes damaged a railway, including a depot and a station and left parts of the city without electricity. In the Zaporizhzhia region, four people were killed and three injured, according to Governor Ivan Federov. Related Ukraine strikes five Russian fighter jets at the airfield in annexed Crimea Russia's strikes cause fires and injuries in Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk Russia carried out "431 strikes on 16 settlements" in the Zaporizhzhia region, Federov wrote on Telegram, saying the attack struck residential buildings, homes, commercial buildings and warehouses. Zelenskyy said two people were injured in the village of Bilenke. "Once again, the Russian army is hunting civilians in an attempt to terrorise frontline cities and communities," the Ukrainian president added in a post on X. The strikes come as Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff is set to travel to Russia, days before the end of the deadline for Moscow to reach a ceasefire deal with Ukraine or face significant US tariffs. Trump has ramped up pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a truce as Moscow continues to strike Ukrainian towns and cities, shortening a previous deadline of 50 days to 8 August. Despite this, Russia has continued to strike Ukraine overnight with additional attacks on the Odesa and Sumy regions, Zelenskyy said. "Pressure must be increased, and this will undoubtedly contribute to peace," he stated. "We look forward to meaningful and decisive steps."

Remote-controlled Russian drone attack kills two in Zaporizhzhya
DPA Kiev Two men were killed by a remote-controlled Russian drone in the south-eastern region of Zaporizhzhya, the region's Governor Ivan Federov wrote on Telegram on Tuesday. He said the men were standing next to a house in the municipality of Stepnohirsk, which is not far from the front line between Russian and Ukrainian troops. Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia's full-scale invasion since February 2022. The two countries intensified their mutual attacks on strategically important railway lines overnight. A Russian airstrike on the Ukrainian railway hub of Lozova damaged the station and other infrastructure buildings, according to the Ukrainian civil defence authorities. One railway employee was killed, and 10 others were injured, including two teenagers, the Kharkiv regional prosecutor's office reported. Railway lines through Lozova connect to Kharkiv and the eastern Ukrainian front-line cities of Kramatorsk and Kostiantynivka. The city was attacked by more than 30 Russian combat drones, according to reports. Mayor Serhii Zelensky described it as the most severe attack in more than three years of war. Both warring parties aim to disrupt the enemy's supply lines to the front by damaging railway infrastructure.

Russia drone strikes on Ukraine kill one, wound 10
Russian drone strikes have killed at least one person and injured 10 in the eastern Ukrainian regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv, officials said Wednesday. Russia and Ukraine have stepped up aerial attacks even as US President Donald Trump pushes the Kremlin and Kyiv to agree to a ceasefire after more than three years of costly fighting. A 45-year-old man was killed when a Russian strike hit cars parked outside a house in Zaporizhzhia, the head of the Ukrainian region's military administration Ivan Federov said on Telegram. Two other people -- a 44-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman -- were injured. In Kharkiv, eight people were injured in drone strikes, mayor Igor Terekhov said. The Kharkiv region's military head Oleg Synegubov called it a 'massive attack by enemy drones' and told residents to 'stay in shelters'. Russia's defence ministry said it intercepted and destroyed 93 Ukrainian drones overnight Tuesday, mostly over the Kursk region. Late Tuesday, Ukraine's general staff said Russia launched 72 strikes and 646 'kamikaze drones' at Ukrainian territory since the beginning of the day. Both Kyiv and Moscow complained to the United States about striking each other's energy sites on Tuesday, with Kyiv calling on Washington to strengthen sanctions on Moscow for 'violating' agreements made at talks in Saudi Arabia. Following separate meetings with US officials, the White House said both Ukraine and Russia had 'agreed to develop measures for implementing' an 'agreement to ban strikes against energy facilities of Russia and Ukraine'. However both have since accused each other of violating the shaky agreement.
