Akash and Nita Ambani worried as heavy rainfall in Ahmedabad interrupts PBKS vs MI Qualifier 2 match; here's why

Not once, but twice, did the start of the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians witness a delay due to rain in Ahmedabad. The sight left MI owners Akash and Nita Ambani visibly worried. Although Ahmedabad received ample rainfall in the lead-up to the playoffs match, which did spark concerns about having a full game at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the forecast showed dry and favourable conditions. However, the start of the match faced two interruptions, right after Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bowl first, keeping the overhead conditions in mind. As the players got ready to come onto the field, with visuals of Mumbai No. 3 Tilak Varma doing shadow batting practice in the dugout, the camera caught the groundsmen running to cover the pitch. A slight drizzle had left them to act promptly, but the covers came off immediately. The Punjab Kings players then walked out amid the pyro techniques, before Iyer was seen running towards the boundary ropes as heavy rainfall started in Ahmedabad. As the remaining players returned to their respective dugouts, Akash and Nita were left concerned, as a washed-out game could end Mumbai's campaign on Sunday. With no reserve day assigned for the Qualifier 2 tie, a washout in Ahmedabad would send Punjab Kings into the final as they finished higher up in the points table at the end of the league stage. The Iyer-led side had ended up as the table-toppers, while Mumbai finished fourth. "If conditions do not permit a Super Over, or subsequent Super Overs within the time available to determine the winner then the team which, at the end of the relevant regular Season, finished in the higher position in the League will be deemed the winner of the relevant play-off match," clarify the IPL's Playing Conditions notice for the 2025 edition of the tournament. Punjab would then face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Ahmedabad on Tuesday's final.

‘Lost the battle, not the war': Shreyas confident of comeback after 8-wicket thrashing in Qualifier 1

'We have lost the battle, but not the war' — these were straightforward words which came out from Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer after his team was bashed by eight wickets in the Indian Premier League 2025 Qualifier 1 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, on Thursday night. Batting first, PBKS, which finished first on the points table first time since 2014, imploded against a potent RCB attack led by Yash Dayal and Josh Hazlewood in the Powerplay. Opener Priyansh Arya fell in just the second over before Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed the other opener, Prabhsimran Singh. Hazlewood picked two big scalps of skipper Iyer and in-form Josh Inglis. Eventually, PBKS were bundled out for just 101 in 14.1 overs before RCB romped home chasing the target with 10 overs to remain. Even though PBKS lost the match vs RCB, the Iyer-led PBKS are still not out of the tournament. They will play the winner of the Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians match in the second Qualifier. 'Not a day to forget, but got to go back to the drawing board. We lost a lot of wickets (in the first innings). There's a lot to go back to and study,' said Iyer after the loss. Iyer said he is not going to bother about his decision-making and PBKS failed to execute the planning, which seemed to be spot-on ahead of the game. 'I am not doubting my decisions to be honest. Whatever we did in terms of planning, outside of the ground whatever (planning) we did, I think it was on point. Just that we couldn't execute it on the field,' he said. 'Can't even blame the bowlers, as it was a low total to defend. We've got to work on our batting, especially on this wicket. In all the games we have played here, there has been some variable bounce,' he added. 'We can't give such reasons because we are professionals at the end of the day, and we have to bat according to the situation and we have to live up to it,' said Iyer.

"Committing Suicide": Sunil Gavaskar Slams PBKS Star For Failure vs RCB In IPL 2025 Qualifier 1

It was a pathetic batting performance from Punjab Kings during the Qualifier 1 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 in Mullanpur on Thursday. After getting an invitation to bat first by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the Shreyas Iyer-led side was bundled out for a paltry 101 runs as none of its batters could take his innings deep. Playing rash shots cost PBKS big and the side ended up losing the game by 8 wickets. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar showed no mercy while commenting on the batting of PBKS, especially Marcus Stoinis. For the Iyer-led team, Stoinis was the top-scorer with 26 runs off 17 balls but he too became a victim of poor shot selection. Stoinis fell as the last recognised batter for PBKS and Gavaskar didn't mince his words while slamming him. RCB spinner Suyash Sharma bowled a googly and Stoinis tried to play a horrible slog-sweep and missed the ball completely. The ball rattled his stumps. "This is unbelievable. This is committing suicide, isn't it?" said Gavaskar said on-air while reacting to the dismissal. Same was the story of other PBKS batters as well. They too did wild swinging and ended up losing their wickets. PBKS captain Shreyas was quite honest in admitting that the batters failed in the game, which led to the side's downfall. "We've got to work on our batting, especially on this wicket. In all the games we have played here, there has been some variable bounce. We can't give such reasons because we are professionals at the end of the day, and we have to bat according to the situation, and we have to live up to it. We have lost the battle but not the war," he said after the game. "Not a day to forget, but got to go back to the drawing board. We lost a lot of wickets (in the first innings). There's a lot to go back and study on. I am not doubting on my decisions to be honest. Whatever we did in terms of planning, outside of the ground, or whatever (planning) we did, I think it was on point. Just that we couldn't execute it on the field, can't even blame the bowlers, as it was a low total to defend," the PBKS captain added. PBKS will get another chance to make it to the final as they will face the winner of the Eliminator game between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians that is set to take place on Friday.

Shreyas Iyer sets unique captaincy record as Punjab Kings reach IPL playoffs after 11 years

Shreyas Iyer etched his name in the history books last year when he became the eighth ever captain to lift an IPL trophy, and the first to do so for Kolkata Knight Riders in 10 years. However, after KKR chose not to retain Iyer for IPL 2025, the 30-year-old batter had a point to prove, and he has done so in style at this year's IPL. Iyer-led Punjab Kings have enjoyed a successful IPL campaign this year, clinching their eighth win on Sunday and securing a place in the playoffs later in the day. This is the first time PBKS have qualified for the play-offs in 11 years, but what makes this milestone even more special is the record Iyer has set. Notably, Iyer has become the first captain ever to lead three different franchises in IPL playoffs. Prior to his stint with KKR, he had led Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in 2019 and 2020, including their only IPL final appearance in 2020. Iyer enjoyed a fruitful partnership with coach Ricky Ponting at the Delhi Capitals, and it has continued to bear fruit for the Kings in IPL 2025. Earlier this year, the right-handed batter became the second-highest paid player in IPL history when he was purchased for ₹ 26.75 crore at the mega auctions in Jeddah. Apart from his captaincy heroics, Iyer has also been leading the side from the front and is the second-highest run scorer for his team. In this season of the IPL, Iyer has scored 435 runs in 12 matches at an average of 48.33 and a strike rate of 174.69. The highest score for Iyer this year came during Punjab Kings' first match as he smashed a 97-run knock against Gujarat Titans to help his side post a total of 243/5 in the 20 overs that eventually saw them win the match by 11 runs.
