Shreyas Iyer sets unique captaincy record as Punjab Kings reach IPL playoffs after 11 years
Shreyas Iyer etched his name in the history books last year when he became the eighth ever captain to lift an IPL trophy, and the first to do so for Kolkata Knight Riders in 10 years. However, after KKR chose not to retain Iyer for IPL 2025, the 30-year-old batter had a point to prove, and he has done so in style at this year's IPL.
Iyer-led Punjab Kings have enjoyed a successful IPL campaign this year, clinching their eighth win on Sunday and securing a place in the playoffs later in the day. This is the first time PBKS have qualified for the play-offs in 11 years, but what makes this milestone even more special is the record Iyer has set.
Notably, Iyer has become the first captain ever to lead three different franchises in IPL playoffs. Prior to his stint with KKR, he had led Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in 2019 and 2020, including their only IPL final appearance in 2020.
Iyer enjoyed a fruitful partnership with coach Ricky Ponting at the Delhi Capitals, and it has continued to bear fruit for the Kings in IPL 2025. Earlier this year, the right-handed batter became the second-highest paid player in IPL history when he was purchased for ₹ 26.75 crore at the mega auctions in Jeddah.
Apart from his captaincy heroics, Iyer has also been leading the side from the front and is the second-highest run scorer for his team. In this season of the IPL, Iyer has scored 435 runs in 12 matches at an average of 48.33 and a strike rate of 174.69. The highest score for Iyer this year came during Punjab Kings' first match as he smashed a 97-run knock against Gujarat Titans to help his side post a total of 243/5 in the 20 overs that eventually saw them win the match by 11 runs.

IPL Final Live Score: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) vs (PBKS) Punjab Kings
Royal Challengers Bengaluru posted 190-9 against Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League final on Tuesday after opening batsman Virat Kohli top-scored with 43. Both the teams are hunting for their first title in the T20 tournament and thousands of Kohli fans filled the world's biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, anticipating an IPL crown for their star batter. The 132,000-capacity stadium was nearly packed with a sea of Bengaluru's red and Kohli's jersey number 18 dominating the stands as chants of "Kohli, Kohli" rang out. Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and invited Bengaluru to bat first with the two teams unchanged from their previous victories. Brief Scores: RCB: 190/9 in 20 overs (Virat Kohli 43, Rajat Patidar 26; Arshdeep Singh 3/40, Kyle Jamieson 3/48, Yuzvendra Chahal 1/37) vs Punjab Kings. (Live Scorecard) Listen to the latest songs, only on 13.5 1 Suyash Sharma to Nehal Wadhera Outside off, cut behind point for a single. 13.4 0 Suyash Sharma to Nehal Wadhera Another wrong 'un, outside off, Nehal looks to cut but misses. 13.3 2 Suyash Sharma to Nehal Wadhera On middle and leg, a hattrick of googlies, Wadhera clips it towards deep mid-wicket and calls for two. But Shashank is way too slow in taking the first run and has to scamper back for the second. Just about makes it, although Krunal Pandya's throw is far from the stumps at the bowler end. 13.2 0 Suyash Sharma to Nehal Wadhera Another wrong 'un, outside off, Nehal Wadhera looks to play the reverse sweep but misses. Excellent take by Jitesh Sharma, given that he would have been blinded. Gets applauded by the bowler. 13.1 1 lb Suyash Sharma to Shashank Singh WIDE. The googly, down the leg side, Shashank Singh misses his flick. The ball goes off the keeper, Jitesh Sharma's gloves towards short fine leg and the batters take the single. Jitesh immediately convinces Rajat Patidar to take the review for the wide call. And UltraEdge clearly indicates that it went off the pad. So just the single and a legal ball as well. ! STRATEGIC TIMEOUT. Just like in the RCB innings, PBKS are struggling to forge a partnership. Inglis was the only one who was seemingly comfortable and his wicket would have given a big boost to Bengaluru. Spin has been the talking point, with the ball gripping. Here's Suyash Sharma. 12.6 1 Krunal Pandya to Shashank Singh Outside off, pushed back to the bowler, who parries it to cover, conceding a single. 3 runs and a wicket from the over, Krunal Pandya finishes with figures of 4-0-17-2. Player Of The Final? 12.5 1 Krunal Pandya to Nehal Wadhera A short ball, pulled through square leg for a run. 12.4 1 Krunal Pandya to Shashank Singh Full, around off, Shashank chips it in the air, but gets it wide of cover for a single. 12.3 0 Krunal Pandya to Shashank Singh Blocks this to the leg side. 12.2 0 Krunal Pandya to Shashank Singh Around off, pushed towards cover. ! Shashank Singh walks in next at number 6, replacing Josh Inglis. 12.1 W Krunal Pandya to Josh Inglis OUT! CAUGHT! This is not the World Championship by any means but two of Australia's greatest rivals - England and India - combine to dismiss an Aussie. Poor shot by Inglis, given the scenario. This was Krunal Pandya's last over and given that he has been the best bowler, Inglis could have played him out. But the ploy of wanting to attack the first ball of every over lures him and he has given his wicket and possibly, the match away. Flighted, closer to the batter's pads, Inglis jumps down the track and looks to go downtown. But he is not to the pitch of the ball and hence, gets no elevation. The ball travels flat towards long on where Liam Livingstone waits patiently and takes a super-cool catch just inside the ropes, ensuring that he does not touch the ropes. Krunal is all over the moon and RCB will feel that they have one hand and one leg on the trophy. Inglis departs for 39 (23) and Punjab Kings are 98/4 after 12.1 overs. They were 43/0 at one stage. Equation - 93 from 47 balls. ! RCB's pace unit has been the key to their success, picking up 59 wickets at a strike rate of 16.5 - the best for them in any IPL season. This was before this match. 11.6 1 Romario Shepherd to Josh Inglis A short ball again, outside off, slower in pace, Josh waits and then plays the upper cut towards deep third for a run. 10 from the over. 11.5 6 Romario Shepherd to Josh Inglis SIX! Just over the fielder again! A short ball, outside off, Inglis picks the length in a trice and pulls it flat over mid-wicket. Once again, the fielder is in interest again but it just tips over. 11.4 1 Romario Shepherd to Nehal Wadhera On middle, worked through mid-wicket for a single. 11.3 0 Romario Shepherd to Nehal Wadhera A short ball, around middle, punched towards cover. 11.3 1 wd Romario Shepherd to Nehal Wadhera WIDE! A full toss, outside the pitch. Wadhera lets it go and then questions the umpire why isn't it given a no ball, as it landed outside the pitch. To this, the umpire responds by saying that it landed after it crossed the batter, hence the no-ball rule does not come into the equation.

He added 43 runs in five overs with Prabhsimran Singh (26) for the first wicket before Josh Hazlewood brought an end to his innings.
