99 days till the Arizona Cardinals' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 99?
99 days till the Arizona Cardinals' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 99? With 99 days till the Cardinals open the season against the Saints, we look at the players who have worn No. 99. It is officially time to start counting down to the start of the 2025 Arizona Cardinals season. They have their season opener on Sunday, Sept. 7 on the road against the New Orleans Saints. That is now 99 days away. As we have done for years, we will count down to the season opener. Some years, we focus on stats. Other times it is a season and often it is jersey numbers. Last year we focused on one player per number. In this countdown, we will look at the history of players using different numbers. Let's look at No. 99 Cardinals players to wear No. 99 No. 99 is a rare number because it was retired in 1950 for Marshall Goldberg, who was part of the Cardinals' one championship team. But it was unretired for two seasons for defensive lineman J.J. Watt, who will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday. Here is the history of No. 99, in reserve order: DL J.J. Watt, 2021-2022 RB Bob Nussbaumer, 1949-1950 FB Marsahll Goldberg, 1946-1948 Watt had 12.5 sacks in his final NFL season with the Cardinals. Denver Broncos: John Franklin-Myers tweet has fans worried
Denver Broncos: John Franklin-Myers tweet has fans worried With the NFL's free agency negotiating window wide open, the Denver Broncos have been busy retaining in-house players while also seeking outside help. One of the team's notable in-house players is defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers, who still has one year left on his contract but has made it clear he wants an extension. JFM recently retweeted a post from former NFL defender J.J. Watt that read: "Reward your players earlier and reap the benefits in the long run. Dragging it out not only ends up costing more, it creates unnecessary tension. The longer you wait, the higher the price." Today, JFM tweeted: "Still counted out.." (We would embed the tweet here, but Twitter/X has had a lot of outages today and embedded tweets aren't functioning at the time of publication.) That tweet led to a flurry of worried reactions from Broncos fans (which we can't embed) along with assurances from fans that the team will get an extension done in time. Franklin-Myers is scheduled to earn about $8 million this season before becoming a free agent in 2026. His projected market value is about $8.5 million, according to Denver will likely want to eventually extend JFM, but other moves seem to be more pressing at the moment. We are tracking all of the team's free agent additions on Broncos Wire. These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans

J.J. Watt is right, Steelers made a mistake not extending T.J. Watt in 2024
The two-time Defensive Player of the Year and future Hall of Famer DE J.J. Watt has thrown in his two cents regarding a potential T.J. Watt contract extension—and the Pittsburgh Steelers may not like it. While making an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Watt argued that the longer the Steelers delay extending his brother, the bigger the price tag will get: "My personal belief—they should have done it last year. I think there was a hometown discount to be had last year. Now, the longer you wait this year—you got Micah [Parsons] coming up. Like you said, you got Aidan Hutchinson, you got Myles [Garrett], you got these guys getting new deals. That number is gonna inch closer to fours in front of it instead of threes." Watt reiterated that while he would hate to be the 'holdout guy,' he understands that life-changing money is worth protecting his body until an extension is reached. "Congratulations to Maxx Crosby he absolutely deserves that earlier you can get a deal done the better it is for everybody" ~ @JJWatt #PMSLive — Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) March 6, 2025 Although Steelers President Art Rooney II has stated that a Watt extension is a priority, the team's lack of urgency set the team up for disastrous situations—like a holdout or trade request. Laid-Back Pat: As the Chiefs chase Super Bowl history, Patrick Mahomes exudes a steadying calm
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes felt as though he needed to apologize after he helped the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills in the AFC championship game, punching their ticket to the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season. Not for the outcome, but for quite possibly the worst spike in NFL history. In a back-and-forth tussle between two of the NFL's top teams, the Chiefs were driving early in the fourth quarter last weekend for the go-ahead score. Mahomes took off to the right and powered into the end zone and, with his adrenaline amped to the max, scrambled to his feet and attempted to spike the ball — only for it to squib out of his hand and into the sideline. See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. By signing up, you agree to our Terms and Privacy Policy. 'That," Mahomes said, 'is why I don't try to spike the ball.' It was a natural outburst of unbridled joy, though, from a quarterback whose fiery will to win has become almost legendary. But on the entire drive leading up to the score, Mahomes had been the complete opposite: calm, poised and under control. In leading the Chiefs into a matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans next weekend, Mahomes was what those in the Kansas City locker room — players and coaches alike — have come to appreciate as "Laid-Back Pat." 'The pressure part of it, when things can dilate you a little bit — when things are tight — don't do that to him,' Chiefs coach Andy Reid explained. 'He kind of flourishes in those moments when they're the toughest. He's just wired that way.' The best in sports usually are. And make no mistake, Mahomes is among the best. He already has three Super Bowl rings and is chasing a fourth, along with an unprecedented third in a row. He's a two-time league MVP who is shattering records with every season that goes by, and the face of a franchise that has reached the level of bonafide dynasty. 'He's the best player I ever played with,' Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins admitted. 'I played with J.J. Watt, and J.J. Watt is definitely a Hall of Famer. But Pat is definitely the best player I ever played with.' And he's at his best when the pressure is at its most. Need proof? How about the fact that the Chiefs have won an NFL-record 17 consecutive games decided by one possession. Or that Mahomes has a winning record — 27 wins, 26 losses — in games in which his team trailed in the fourth quarter; the next-best quarterback with at least 25 starts in league history has a winning percentage of just 38.6. Then consider the postseason, when the pressure is pushed to another level. When the Chiefs have been within one possession in the fourth quarter or overtime, Mahomes has led them to points on 13 of 14 drives. He's a combined 40 of 56 for 552 yards with five passing touchdowns, no interceptions and a run TD on them. In nine playoff games in which Kansas City trailed in the fourth quarter, Mahomes merely produced six come-from-behind wins. In two of the three losses, he at least managed to get the Chiefs to overtime. 'Whatever he's got to do to get us to the next level, to win the game," Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said, "Pat's going to do it.' It has been that way since Mahomes was a kid, the son of former big league pitcher Pat Mahomes Sr. The younger Mahomes was always the one who kept an extraordinary calm, whether he was playing baseball, basketball or football. 'I'm sure growing up in a locker room with his dad was a big part of that, or at least a part of it,' Reid said, "but some if it is just innate, that's given to you. He's one of those guys, the tighter the situation, the looser he plays.' It's hard to find a tougher situation than the Super Bowl, where Mahomes is about to play for the fifth time. In his first trip, against San Francisco in 2020, the Chiefs trailed 20-10 with just over 6 minutes left before Mahomes led them to three straight TDs and a 31-20 victory. Three years later, against Philadelphia, the Chiefs trailed 27-21 in the fourth quarter before Mahomes helped to set up Harrison Butker's field goal for a 38-35 victory. And last year, the 49ers led twice in the fourth quarter and once in overtime, and each time Mahomes led the Chiefs back in an eventual 25-22 win. Of course, the Chiefs would prefer to beat Philadelphia in a rout in their Super Bowl rematch on Feb. 9, rather than take another title game down to the wire. But if that happens, they have confidence in their laid-back quarterback to get the job done. 'He has a history of doing those things in his career, in big-time moments,' Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said with a smile. 'It's usually a critical moment that he makes the play. That's who he is.' ___ AP NFL:
