Tesla Europe sales plummeted by 52% in April — trade group – DW – 05/27/2025

Chinese brand BYD saw more pure electric car registrations in the continent than Elon Musk's EV brand in April, according to new data. Europeans are buying fewer Teslas than before despite a growing demand for electric cars, according to a study published Tuesday, in keeping with a trend seen in recent months. The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association said that just 5,475 Tesla cars were sold in April, down 52.6% from the same month last year. In the first four months of this year, Tesla sales were down 46.1% when compared with the first four months last year. This means only 41,677 cars were sold over the course of the first four months of this year. The study corresponds with data earlier this month that showed that Tesla sales in Germany and the UK fell to their lowest point in more than two years in April. Auf Wiedersehen! According to data from JATO automotive intelligence firm, 7,231 pure electric BYD cars were registered in April, compared with 7,165 Teslas in that month. Some experts have attributed a decline in Elon Musk's EV brand on the continent to a slow rollout of the latest version of the popular Model Y, while others have pointed to Musk's involvement in US President Donald Trump's administration. In Germany, people are still buying Mercedes and Volkswagen vehicles, while BYD and other Chinese brands such as Nio and Xpeng remain more popular in Spain and Italy. Edited by: Wesley Dockery

BYD beats Tesla in European EV sales despite EU tariffs in 'watershed moment,' report says

BYD sold more pure battery electric vehicles in Europe than Tesla for the first time ever last month — a "watershed moment" for the region's car market, according to a report from JATO Dynamics. New car registrations data from the automotive intelligence firm shows that BYD's Europe volumes rose 359% in April from last year as the company continues its global expansion efforts. Over the same period, Tesla reported yet another monthly drop, with total volumes down 49%, JATO said. That follows protests against CEO Elon Musk and the company in the region. According to Felipe Munoz, global automotive analyst at JATO, though the difference between the two brands' monthly sales totals is relatively small, the implications of BYD beating out Tesla "are enormous." "This is a watershed moment for Europe's car market, particularly when you consider that Tesla has led the European BEV market for years, while BYD only officially began operations beyond Norway and the Netherlands in late 2022," Munoz said. JATO added that BYD is also beating well established European car brands across the region, outselling Fiat and Seat in France, for example. That growth comes even before production begins at its new plant in Hungary, which is expected to become the center of European production operations. BYD's success in the EU comes despite the economic bloc's imposition of punitive tariffs on battery EVs made in China last October. It attributed the move to unfair trade practices. The punitive tariffs appeared to be favorable to Tesla, assigning its made-in-China vehicles a 7.8% duty compared with BYD's 17%. Other Chinese EV makers were given tariffs as high as about 35%. The EU also has a standard 10% car import duty. JATO's report said that while tariffs had an initial impact on the sales of Chinese automakers, the companies have mitigated it by expanding and diversifying their European line-ups with the introduction of plug-in hybrids. "China is not only the world leader in BEVs; its automakers are global leaders in plug-in hybrid vehicles too," Munoz said. Battery EVs run entirely on electricity, while hybrid vehicles combine an electric battery with an internal combustion engine. Hybrid vehicles have not yet been targeted by EU tariffs. Meanwhile, there has been growing demand in the region's EV segment, with JATO data showing that registrations of battery EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are up by 28% and 31%, respectively, despite declines among internal combustion engine vehicles. Registrations of all electric vehicles made by Chinese automakers in April rose by 59% year on year, reaching almost 15,300 units in April, the report added. Ahead of the EU's tariff decision last year, Rhodium had predicted that tariffs would need to be as high as 55% for the European market to be unattractive for Chinese EV exporters. In March, it was revealed that Tesla, which only sells pure battery vehicles, fell behind BYD in total annual sales. Tesla's shares have fallen over 10% over the same period amid blowback from Musk's involvement with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The CEO recently committed to leading Tesla for the next five years. BYD shares were up 3.9% in Hong Kong trading on Friday and have surged about 78% year to date.

China's BYD Outsells Tesla in Europe for First Time

BYD of China sold more electric cars than Tesla in Europe for the first time last month, reflecting an aggressive push by the Chinese automaker on the continent as well as the continuing travails of Elon Musk's company among European buyers. . BYD edged out Tesla by fewer than 100 vehicles, according to data for 28 European countries released on Thursday by JATO Dynamics, a research firm. BYD sold 7,231 fully battery-powered cars in Europe last month, versus Tesla's 7,165. Despite the small margin, it is 'a watershed moment for Europe's car market,' Felipe Munoz, an analyst at JATO, said in a statement. European car buyers appear willing to embrace Chinese electric cars, which remain cheaper than locally made alternatives despite tariffs imposed by the European Union last year aimed at protecting domestic producers. BYD's battery-powered car sales jumped nearly 170 percent in April, versus the same month last year. That far surpassed the pace of sales for all electric cars, which grew by 17 percent over that period. At the same time, Europeans are shunning Tesla, which for years was the most popular brand of electric cars in Europe. Its sales plunged 49 percent year over year in April. In Europe, Tesla's cars first became available in Norway in 2014, before becoming the leading producer of electric vehicles on the continent. It began production at a factory outside Berlin in 2022 — the same year that BYD started selling cars in Norway and the Netherlands. The Chinese automaker is building a factory in Hungary, as well as one in Turkey, which can export cars to the European Union without having to pay tariffs. This week, BYD announced that it would establish its European headquarters in Hungary, which it said would create 2,000 jobs, including in research and development. Over the past year, BYD has expanded rapidly throughout Europe. If its plug-in hybrid models are also included, it increased sales by well over 300 percent in April, compared with the previous year. By this measure, it also outsold established European brands like Fiat, Dacia and Seat in some big European countries. Germany's Volkswagen, which has struggled for years to compete against Chinese automakers as well as Tesla, topped the list of electric car sales in April, with more than 23,500 new registrations, up roughly 60 percent. Tesla's sales in Europe had been slowing even before Mr. Musk, the company's chief executive, began spending millions to back President Trump last year. But the backlash grew after he took up a role at the White House slashing thousands of jobs and making deep cuts to spending, including on foreign aid. Last month, the car maker's sales in Germany and Britain fell to their lowest point in more than two years.

INSIDE MAIL – WAGGA ME ME (12) has finished second twice in four career starts. One of them was behind a subsequent Highway winner in Urafiki. The other was first-up at Kembla on April 15 where he was passed late after a willing duel over the last furlong. Go well here. SUPER NIC (4) is a Gary Colvin-trained local with a favourable alley, Blaike McDougall, and trialled rather well. KURRAJONG (2) did some good things in his first preparation. The jumpouts of SMART ASSET (3) have been good. Bet: ME ME to win, exacta 12 to beat 4, trifecta 4 / 2, 3, 4 SPARKLENGLITTER (6) was bought online for $2,500 in May last year. The Pat Murphy-trained mare has won $34,700 in two starts, both easy wins. In fact, she won her Maiden by a three-quarters of a length then went to the Class 1 and won by four-and-a-half lengths in fast time. XSPIRITOUS (7) has a compelling set of numbers; not least that she has a win and a third from her four runs at this track and trip. Should be the main challenger to this favourite. PAPARAZZO (5) is a Craig Weeding-trained three-year-old by Holler who was runner-up to Black Caviar's daughter, Persian Caviar, on debut. Ran second again after that, spelled, and resumed a popular win at Benalla on April 14. Tyler Schiller, good draw and easy to like. SHERIDAN STREET (12) is a Doug Gorrel-trained filly who drew 12 of 12 on debut at Gundagai of all places but was still able to lead all the way, beating the subsequent winner Isaguru. Horrible draw again but has Molly Bourke on. JATO (3) was bought for $25,000 as a weanling by Neville Begg. He is by Starcraft out of a Zabeel mare so he has been waiting all his life to get to a mile and gets there at the perfect time given he is third-up off a very classy win in a 1400m Class 1 at Albury on April 24. DUPLI KATE's (2) barnstorming win (and wow, what a ride) here in the Guineas Prelude took her record to four wins and three thirds from 11 starts. TACT (7) is a lightly raced last start winner. Another one wanting a mile. Bet: JATO to win, exacta 3 to beat 2 BON HOLLER (9) has two wins and a fourth from his three starts. That fourth was to Spicy Lu who ran in the Champagne Stakes soon after. As for Bon Holler's next, and last start, he was a big winner here over 1300m with a substantial weight. Drawn well and gets B-Mac. (Blaike McDougall). PROPHET'S DAUGHTER (2) has run some good races in some good quality races and without luck from time to time. LOVE ON DISPLAY (16) was fantastic at her first NSW run. SO YOU PENCE (15) was '2, 1' first prep, long spell, then '2, 1' this prep, winning the last one by panels. Should also point out that she was a neck second on debut (November 2022) to the future Wagga Town Plate winner, The Prodigal Son. KEIKOKU (5) is purpose-built for a fast run 1200m at Wagga. Famous for being slow early but fast late as he was in the Wagga Town Plate Prelude last start. Bet: SO YOU PENCE to win, KEIKOKU each-way, quinella 5, 15, boxed trifecta 5, 7, 8, 12, 15 MEDATSU (10) is a Chris Waller-trained gelding who has been competitive to varying degrees when tried in some good races; examples one and two being his sixth in of the Rosehill Cup and the recent fifth to stablemate Matsulem in the Albury Cup. Kerrin McEvoy is two rides for one win on Medatsu. HELLUVA SOIREE (16) is two from two at Wagga, sure in easier grade than this, but she is a mare in rare form. Way overs at $61/16. LOVE ON DISPLAY (22) may have already run, if so, all roads lead to SALUTE AGAIN (1) who has some rock solid Highway form. On top of that, she was fourth in the 2024 SDRA Qualifier at Albury; the one where the Final winner, Asgarda, was runner-up. Third-up here, gets 3kg off. PRINCE PAPA (12) has only won three from 27 but he is two starts for a win and a third at Wagga and better still, is one for one at the track and distance. CASHBURN (11) and JAZZ ALL KNIGHT (15) have claims.

JATO introduces offering to detail used car data

Automotive data company JATO has launched VINView Pro, a product designed to meet the increasing demand for precise and comprehensive used vehicle information among fleet and leasing companies. VINView Pro builds on JATO's existing VINView, offering detailed build specifications for individual vehicles, including all fitted options and standard specifications. Developed in collaboration with AutoGrab, VINView Pro leverages advanced machine learning and AI systems. JATO's technology partner AutoGrab contributed its expertise in automotive intelligence to enhance the product's capabilities. VINView Pro aims to resolve issues such as inaccurate vehicle data, which can lead to mispriced listings and incorrect insurance valuations. JATO Dynamics head of retail Paul Hilton said: 'We know from regular inquiries we receive that there is huge demand for accurate build specification for vehicles. 'To express it simply, we are obtaining complex factory data from OEMs, and putting it into more everyday language that businesses can use when sourcing or supplying vehicles.' AutoGrab founder and CEO Chris Gardner said: 'Leveraging JATO's extensive vehicle data, we are refining our valuation services for the market and deepening our insights for forecasting and analytics – and VINView Pro is a key part of that.' Besides fleet and leasing companies, online marketplaces, and retailers operate in the used car space. By providing exact factory-fitted options and original pricing information, the solution hopes to eliminate guesswork and allows businesses to access accurate data through API integration. JATO said the system offers transparency and accuracy for dealerships, insurers, and service providers, improving operations and risk management. Insurers can assess vehicles based on their exact build configurations, leading to more precise underwriting and risk management. Users can access VINView Pro via JATO's Sales Link platform or an API. By entering VIN numbers or VRM, users receive detailed data on fitted options, original pricing, and standard equipment, enhancing decision-making processes for businesses and customers alike. Last month, JATO extended its two-decade alliance with Ayvens, a global leader in sustainable mobility, by renewing their long-term partnership.
