Funding agreement to raise power lines at JAXPORT approved by JEA

A plan to raise power lines over the St. Johns River is moving forward. At a JEA board meeting on Tuesday, leaders approved an agreement in which JEA will contribute $32.5 million to help get the power lines raised. JEA is working with the City of Jacksonville and JAXPORT to complete this project. It is aimed at making room for bigger and taller ships that require a higher clearance. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< The lines will be raised to 225 feet above high tide. The project area stretches from Blount Island on the north side of the St. Johns River to Fort Caroline on the south. 'We've got to be part of that solution to help that, and so we are happy to participate this time,' said JEA's Chief of Staff Kurtis Wilson. According to JEA, the total cost of the project is $117 million. The city's investment includes $22.5 million which was previously committed and matches the state of Florida's $22.5 million contribution. The remaining $65 million cost is being split between JEA and JAXPORT. 'It's $32.5 million from us and same from the port,' said Wilson. He also said that raising the power lines will upgrade critical JEA infrastructure, resulting in improvements to the resiliency of the power grid and making it compatible with new technology that will improve efficiency. This project will go to city council for final approval. As of now the project's expected completion date is set for summer 2027. Brunswick now the top port in the nation for automobiles, heavy equipment

At the Brunswick State of the Port event Wednesday, Georgia Ports President and CEO Griff Lynch announced that Brunswicks' Colonel's Island Terminal is now the nation's busiest port for automobiles, as well as heavy farm and construction equipment. It takes the top spot from the Port of Baltimore, which was forced to shut down for weeks following a deadly bridge collapse. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Lynch said the port handled more than 3 million tons of roll-on/roll/off cargo in 2024, including 841,000 cars and trucks. That's an increase of more than 13% over the previous year. Lynch said the boom coincided with $262 million in improvements completed last fall that expanded Brunswick's capacity for processing and storing autos. 'That's huge. I can't believe it myself,' Lynch said in a phone interview after his speech. He added: 'This is one of those 'If you build it, they will come' situations.' More than 90% of autos moved by rail at Colonel's Island are U.S.-made exports, according to Georgia Ports. The Port of Brunswick often gets overshadowed by its larger sister port in Savannah, the fourth-busiest in the U.S. for retail goods and other commodities shipped in containers. But Georgia officials have invested heavily in Brunswick, where Lynch said recent upgrades and expansions have caused automakers to shift business to Georgia from neighboring ports, including Jacksonville. Read: 'Well-protected': JAXPORT CEO predicts tariffs will have minimal impact on operations The Port of Brunswick plans further upgrades in the coming years. A new berth built for docking larger car-carrying ships is being designed and should open in 2027, Lynch said. The port is also building a new railyard that will eventually triple its capacity for using trains to deliver cars for export. Meanwhile, Georgia port officials are looking to Washington to fund improvements to Brunswick's shipping channel. The Army Corps of Engineers wants to widen portions of the waterway to give ships more room to turn after the South Korean freighter Golden Ray tipped over while leaving the port in 2019. Lynch said maintenance dredging is also needed to return the channel to its proper depth of up to 38 feet. ‘Well-protected': JAXPORT CEO predicts tariffs will have minimal impact on operations

The Trump Administration's 10-percent tariff on Chinese goods is now in effect and the 25-percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada could kick in within a month. The tariffs were the talk of the town at Thursday's State of the Port presentation. 'It'll impact all ports,' said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] But Green is optimistic JAXPORT is better positioned than almost any other port to weather the storm. 'There will be an impact, but it will be very minimal to us,' said Green. Green noted JAXPORT is one of the most diverse ports in North America in terms of where products are imported from and what kind of products come in through the port. 'You have break bulk, autos, you've got containers and you have cruises. So, we see ourselves well protected when it comes to that. So, if any commodity gets hit, you know, it actually helps because we're just as strong in the other,' said Green. 'People stockpiling, front loading in anticipation of potential tariffs,' said Air Van Inc CEO Ike Sherlock. Read: Cost of power line project balloons as JEA and JAXPORT work out cost-sharing agreement Sherlock said he doesn't anticipate imports slowing, especially not for priority products like those related to the medical field, IT and fintech. Instead, he anticipates consumers are more likely to feel the brunt of the impacts. 'I think we should all anticipate, for the short-term anyway, higher prices on everything,' said Sherlock. Read: Potential tariffs on imported goods could affect how much you spend on everyday items Sherlock said he doesn't anticipate the tariffs will have any major impacts on jobs around the port either. He said he also expects any impacts to trade will likely subside once the tariffs are either lifted or become the new normal.
