Former Alabama guard reportedly signs two-way contract with NBA team
Only days after being waived by the Boston Celtics, former Alabama Crimson Tide basketball standout JD Davison has now reportedly found a new home in the NBA. According to a report Saturday from NBA insider Chris Haynes, Davison has signed with the Houston Rockets. The Rockets also later announced the signing Sunday, along with the news that Davison has signed a two-way contract. A member of Boston's 2024 NBA championship-winning team, Davison has spent each of the past three seasons in the Celtics organization, with a majority of the time coming in the NBA G League. With Boston, Davison appeared in only 36 games during that span where he averaged 1.9 points per game on 38.5% shooting from the field. Davison, a former second round pick from the 2022 NBA draft, is also coming off a career-year in which he won the 2024-25 NBA G League MVP award, and now heads to Houston where the former Alabama guard joins yet another NBA title contender. Former Boston Celtics draft pick signs two-way contract with Houston Rockets
On Thursday, July 24, the Boston Celtics waived JD Davison. The Alabama product had been with the franchise for three years, winning the G League MVP in 2025. However, it hasn't taken Davison long to find a new home in the NBA, as on Saturday, July 26, he signed a two-way deal with the Houston Rockets, per the NBA's transaction logs. Davison will likely spend most of the season suiting up for the Rio Grand Valley Vipers, but will undoubtedly have his sights set on cracking Ime Udoka's rotation. Unlike his time in Boston, there could be some scope for him to earn minutes within Udoka's second unit. Outside of Fred VanVleet, Reed Sheppard and Aaron Holiday, there isn't much depth at the guard position, which could give Davion a clearer path forward. Throughout his three-year tenure with the Celtics, Davison suited up for 36 games, averaging 1.9 points and 0.9 rebounds in 5.5 minutes per contest. He will undoubtedly be hoping to showcase more of his skill set in Houston, where the team's style of play better suits what he brings to the table. Celtics fans can now continue to follow Boston's former draft pick and his development out in the Western Conference, as Davison continues to pursue an NBA career. The Boston Celtics cutting JD Davison gave them more than just cap relief
The Boston Celtics cutting point guard JD Davison gave them more than just cap relief. The Celtics elected to move on from last season's G League Most Valuable Player earlier this week, with the most obvious reasoning behind the move from the outside being getting the team's roster under the second apron, which will save the team some money. But it also got the Celtics free of all the restrictive team building impacts that status puts on the team's front office, making it easier to begin reshaping the roster in earnest for the return of injured star forward Jayson Tatum next season. What specific things does this newfound status bring to Boston in terms of team building? The hosts of the CLNS Media "How Bout Them Celtics!" podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk it over. Check it out below! Report: Rockets agree to deal with G League MVP JD Davison
July 27 - The Houston Rockets have reached an agreement with guard JD Davison, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. Davison was selected by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft. Over the past three seasons, he appeared in 36 total games for the franchise, averaging 1.9 points in 5.5 minutes per game. However, the young guard made a big impression in the G League as a member of the Maine Celtics. Last season, he earned G League MVP honors, averaging 25.1 points, 7.5 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. Behind Davison, Maine made a run to the Eastern Conference finals. Despite his success, the Celtics waived the 22-year-old on July 24. Davison will battle to make the Rockets' final roster. Houston's current backcourt options include Fred VanVleet, Amen Thompson, Reed Sheppard, Josh Okogie and Aaron Holiday. --Field Level Media

What will the Boston Celtics do with the roster spot opened up by JD Davison's departure?
What will the Boston Celtics do with the roster spot opened up by JD Davison's departure? The Celtics elected to waive the University of Alabama alum on Thursday (July 25) afternoon, presumably to get the team's roster under the NBA's second apron and all the penalties that brings teams like Boston. In so doing, they opened up a roster spot, but one that will require the right sort of player to fill on several levels, if they fill it at all. In order to make use of the roster spot in a way that makes sense, the Celtics would need to find a player making (or able to make) less than Davison did to keep the team from ending up right back where they started. Add in that the front office is likely looking for younger talent able to provide low-cost depth for when Boston gets back to trying to contend, and the pool of potential fits gets slim in a hurry -- at least before the passing of some of the regular season or other trades makes such moves less difficult. The cohosts of "Havlicek Stole the Pod" took some time on a recent episode of their show with guest Justin Turpin of WEEI to look at what Boston might do with that roster spot, as well as what else is on the team's plate in terms of issues needing closure for the rest of the 2025 NBA offseason. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say about that roster spot and more. Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on: Spotify: iTunes: YouTube:
