Unable to come to terms with the deaths of our kids: DKS

Bengaluru: Expressing deep grief over loss of life in the stampede, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar today said that he was finding it difficult to come to terms with the death of young kids. 'Can't come to terms with the tragic death of our young kids in yesterday's stampede. Those kids had a bright future ahead of them. This incident has tarnished the reputation of Bengaluru and Karnataka. We have taken this incident seriously and we will rectify the shortcomings. This is a lesson for us,' he said while speaking to reporters at his Sadashivanagar residence. Replying to a question on the stampede near Chinnaswamy stadium, he said, 'None of us expected that an incident like this would happen in Karnataka. I treat this incident as a personal tragedy. There is a lot of pain among the people of the state about this unfortunate tragedy. This is a time for mourning and not for scoring some political brownie points. The blame for this incident can't be put on one or two individuals.' 'There was euphoria among the fans of RCB as their favourite team had won the IPL after 18 long years. The victory celebration saw sudden surge of crowds leading to the tragedy. The parents of the victims appealed to us to hand over the bodies without a post-mortem, but unfortunately the procedure doesn't allow that. It can lead to legal issues in the future if the cause of death is not established,' he explained. Mastermind of 'politics over dead bodies' Asked about criticism of the BJP, he said, 'I am answerable to the people of the state and not to BJP. Their statements are incoherent and wreak of political opportunism. They are masterminds of opportunistic politics.' 'Kumaraswamy and BJP have made politics over dead bodies as their profession. We can list out all the tragedies during their term, but I don't want to stoop to their level. I have seen kids aged 14-15 dead in the stampede, no family can digest such a tragedy. The police commissioner told the organisers to cut down the programme to 10 minutes. We also spoke to the RCB management to cut the programme short,' he lamented. 'Even the KSCA President and Secretary could not go to the stadium and I had to take them in my car. My media friends informed about the stampede. The police commissioner too spoke to me,' he added. Will talk about incidents during BJP and JDS regime in the Session 'It doesn't matter what politicians say about this tragedy, they have their political calculations behind their statements. C T Ravi, Kumaraswamy, Ashok are all doing politics over this. This is not the time to rebut them. Will talk about incidents during their regime when the session convenes. I am not going to talk about what happened during Rajkumar's death. BJP and JDS are experts in the brand of 'politics over dead bodies. That is their sole agenda,' he retorted. Asked about Kumaraswamy's accusation that the DCM was responsible for the deaths, 'I will respond to Kumaraswamy later. I was in a court in Kanakapura for a hearing. I rushed to Bengaluru the moment the police rejected permission for the parade. We even stopped metro services to stop swelling crowds.'

World Environment Day: MLA GTD urges eco-protection and tree planting

Mysuru: Due to rising global temperatures and climate change, several problems are emerging. Along with development, we must also conserve natural resources. If we fail to understand that humans cannot survive without the environment, it will lead to difficulties in the future, Chamundeshwari MLA GT Devegowda said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking at a programme organised by the forest department to celebrate at Koorgalli, where the lake development and tree planting initiative was launched, he said: "For clean air and a healthy society, we need trees around us. Only then can we breathe and live peacefully." The JDS MLA added that while we have progressed scientifically, our ancestors ensured the air remained breathable by planting rows of trees. "That's why we still see many large trees," the former minister said. He emphasised that the neem trees along the Outer Ring Road in the city help the urban area maintain clean air. "Trees protect our health and well-being," he noted. He expressed concern that rivers are getting polluted. Although we say we drink clean water, in reality, we consume contaminated water. "Even in Bengaluru, though people drink water from the KRS (Krishna Raja Sagara), pollutants from the Lakshmanateertha River are mixed in it," he said. He mentioned raising this issue in the legislative assembly and emphasised that we must prevent toxic substances from entering waterbodies. "Everyone must become aware and actively protect the environment," he advised. "Every home should plant at least one tree and encourage others to do the same," he said, and praised Automotive Axles Limited for undertaking the development of the Koorgalli lake as part of World Environment Day celebrations.

"BJP, JDS playing politics with dead bodies": Karnataka Dy CM DK Shivakumar on Bengaluru stampede

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 5 (ANI): Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (secular) for 'playing politics with dead bodies, as he addressed the media for the first time after the Bengaluru stampede. Addressing the reporters, Shivakumar broke down while expressing his grief, and reaffirmed his support to the families who have been hurt by the loss of their loved ones. While expressing grief over the stampede, Shivakumar added, 'I don't want to play dirty politics. BJP and JDS always play politics on dead bodies; that is their political agenda. But they should see what they have done, we are deeply hurt, the image of Karnataka, Bangalore, we take it, we are not blaming others, though it has happened very unexpectedly.' 'We must learn an administrative lesson, let the opposition do politics on dead bodies. I will list how many dead bodies they have done politics on. But it hurts to see the little children. I have seen their pain,' he added. Further hitting out at JDS leader and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy, he said, 'Kumaraswamy has been playing politics on the dead bodies, that is his profession. I will not do politics like him about what happened during his administration. I am worried about children, I saw small children. I saw ten people. No family can digest it. I came to know about the matter from the media. Even the RCB management could not go there.' Eleven people died and more than 30 were injured in a stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy stadium as a huge crowd of nearly 3 lakh people had gathered to witness the victory celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru for winning the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Deputy CM said that the state government was shocked and reiterated that it was an unexpected event which had happened. 'We never expected such a crowd after 18 years. Things have happened, now let us be part of the grief. It is our family members, we all are shocked, CM, Home Minister, entire government,' he told reporters here. Shivakumar also claimed that the IPL team had earlier only announced to the media that they were coming to the city, and that the state government had 'no option' but to allow the event. 'We did not expect such an incident to happen in our state. RCB had told the media that they were coming (to Bengaluru). We didn't have an option; what happened here happened in our home. Everyone has their pain in their own home. I cannot say that one or two people are wrong here. We must also learn a lesson from this,' he said. He also claimed that as soon as the news of a stampede was known, he told the organisers and officials to stop the event, however, officials were not allowed to make any announcement. 'We were not even allowed to make any announcements there, I did not know who was going there. Then the commissioner came and told us he had done one or two things. I immediately told him to stop the program. No speech, nothing. This is not a time to blame anyone. It does not matter what politicians say, it is only their opinion,' he said. Earlier, Union Minister Kumaraswamy held Shivakumar responsible for the stampede, alleging that the incident was caused by the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister's 'impatience, immaturity, and irresponsibility.' The Union Minister demanded that 'the person responsible for this tragedy must be immediately sacked from the cabinet.' Following the stampede, the Karnataka High Court has taken cognisance of the RCB Victory Parade stampede at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium and is set to hear a PIL into the matter later today. Hemavathy canal protest: FIR against 3 MLAs, 2 religious heads

TUMAKURU: The Gubbi police have booked three legislators and two religious heads among others for Saturday's protest opposing the Hemavathy Express canal, a pet project of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. FIRs were registered against 11 people, including Turuvekere MLA MT Krishnappa of JDS, Tumakuru Rural MLA B Suresh Gowda and city MLA GB Jyothiganesh, both from BJP. The FIRs mentioned two khavi-wearing persons (religious heads), but did not name them. Some non-bailable charges were also included in the FIRs as one of the police personnel was severely injured. They were charged under Sections 191, 115(2), 121(1), 132, 189(2), 190, 223, 351(2) and 352 of BNS. It's alleged that they gathered unlawfully at the project site at Sunkapura, indulged in rioting, voluntarily caused hurt to the public servant by throwing stones and deterred them from discharging their duties, among others. The protesters had alleged that Shivakumar was diverting the canal to take water to his home district Ramanagara. On Friday, thousands of people protested and blocked the Bengaluru-Shivamogga-Honnavara NH-206 at the project site at Sunkapura in Gubbi taluk. They set tyres on fire besides deflating the tyres of KSRTC buses, creating inconvenience to passengers. Shivakumar claimed that 40% of the work has been completed and the Rs 1,500 crore project cannot be stalled at this stage. It's being implemented after the technical committee submitted its report, Tumakuru district in-charge and Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara claimed. Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti V Somanna had written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to stop the project, calling it 'unscientific'. Congress MLA from Gubbi ST Srinivas on Sunday said he too will oppose the project. 'I will meet Shivakumar and raise the issue as the project will affect farmers of Tumakuru district,' he told reporters. 'Attempt to murder inspector' In a separate FIR, BJP leader Dilip Kumar and his supporters Rakesh, Koushik and hundreds of others were booked on charges of attempt to murder under Section 109 of BNS. Turuvekere Police Circle Inspector Lohith BN was injured severely in stone throwing. He was shifted to Siddaganga hospital in Tumakuru.
