Congress condemns rape, murder of 9-year-old girl in Bihar

Alleging political patronage for criminals, the Congress on Sunday condemned the brutal rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl in Muzaffarpur in NDA-ruled Bihar. The party alleged in the Muzaffarpur incident, the rapist was a serial offender allowed to roam free by the administration. 'Rapists and criminals were feeling emboldened as the JD-U-BJP government had let powerful and influential people go scot-free despite serious charges,' said party spokesperson Shama Mohamed. Addressing a press conference at the AICC office here with MP Ranjeet Ranjan, Shama Mohamed revealed that after the brutal rape and heinous assault on the nine-year-old victim on May 26, she was left to die near a brick kiln. Ranjan disclosed that the victim was initially admitted to a local hospital in Muzaffarpur. After her condition deteriorated, she was referred to AIIMS, Patna, where the doctors refused to admit her, citing summer vacation and the unavailability of specialists required for multi-specialty treatment. The relatives of the girl then took her to Patna Medical College and Hospital where again she was refused admission for about five hours, she said. It was only after Bihar state Congress president Rajesh Kumar reached there that she was finally admitted. However, by that time, it was too late and she eventually lost the battle for her life, she said. Ranjan noted that had the victim been provided proper treatment at the right time, her life could have been saved. She held the JDU-BJP government in Bihar responsible for her rape and subsequent criminal medical negligence that led to her death. Shama Mohamed remarked that just because the victim belonged to the Dalit community and not an upper caste, she was refused treatment at an institution like AIIMS. She pointed out, even after she was taken to Patna Medical College and Hospital, the victim was again denied admission and was left waiting in an ambulance for about five hours until the state Congress president intervened. Mohamed disclosed that this was one in a series of atrocities and heinous crimes against women taking place in Bihar. She also referred to several similar incidents in the past.

Is communicating with Dalits a sin, asks Congress over Rahul Gandhi's Darbhanga address permission

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday (May 15, 2025) hit out at the JDU-BJP government in Bihar, accusing it of sheer dictatorship by "preventing" Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi from holding a 'Shiksha Nyay Samvad' in Darbhanga. Mr. Gandhi addressed students at Mithila University's Ambedkar Hostel, despite being allegedly denied permission to hold the event. "Is communicating with Dalit, deprived and backward class students against the Constitution? Is it a sin to talk to them about their education, their recruitment exams and jobs," asked Mr. Kharge. "It is the height of dictatorship that the JDU-BJP government prevented Rahul Gandhi from attending the 'Shiksha Nyay Samvad' program at the Ambedkar Hostel in Darbhanga, Bihar," he said in a post on X in Hindi. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh shared a video of police action in preventing Gandhi from going to the Ambedkar students hostel in Darbhanga. "India is a democracy, it is governed by the Constitution, not by dictatorship. No one can stop us from raising our voice for social justice and education," Ramesh said in his post on X. The Congress had also expressed outrage on the suggestion by the authorities to change the venue to an alternative site. Addressing the students, Gandhi claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to hold a caste census "out of fear" of the country's deprived population, to which the opposition was lending its voice. The leader of the opposition made the remark at a charged-up interaction with students in Darbhanga district of Bihar. "As you all are aware, my car was stopped at the gate (of Mithila University). But I did not relent. I got out and took a circuitous route to reach here on foot," said the Rae Bareli MP, who launched 'Shiksha Nyay Samvad', a public interaction programme in Bihar where assembly polls are due later this year.

Bihar: Congress protests against NDA govt; claims administration tried to stop Rahul Gandhi's programme in Darbhanga

Darbhanga (Bihar) [India], May 15 (ANI): Bihar Congress on Thursday protested against the NDA government and alleged that the Darbhanga District Administration had tried to stop Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's programme at Ambedkar Hostel in Darbhanga, Bihar. The Police allegedly tried to stop Rahul Gandhi from going to the Ambedkar Hostel in Darbhanga to address students at an event. Rahul Gandhi will launch 'Shiksha Nyay Samvad' in Darbhanga, Bihar, today. Darbhanga Deputy Mayor, Nazia Hasan, said that cancelling the permission at the last minute was a part of a 'pre-planned conspiracy.' 'If the administration did not want to grant us permission, they could have denied it the day we asked. But cancelling the permission at the last minute was a part of a pre-planned conspiracy. The preparations here had been going on for the last 4-5 days... The reason is that the government fears losing its seat in Darbhanga. They are scared that if Rahul Gandhi comes here, he will unite and motivate the youth... Rahul Gandhi does not require a mic or a stage for his voice to be heard. A street and a crossroad are sufficient for him,' Hasan told ANI. Congress Leader Abhay Dubey attacked the NDA alliance and said that denying permission at the last moment shows their 'political malice.' 'I want to ask the BJP and JDU government if establishing a dialogue of justice in social education has been made a crime? Are you treating the students waiting for that programme and Rahul Gandhi in the hostel like criminals?... We warn and challenge that JDU_BJP jails have not produced the iron that can imprison the steely resolve of Rahul Gandhi... Denying permission at the last moment shows their political malice, which they are expressing towards Rahul Gandhi and Dalit students... Rahul Gandhi will watch the movie Phule in Patna to internalise the difficulties Dalit, backwards and tribal students have faced in choosing the path of education,' Abhay Dubey said. National President of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), Varun Choudhary, called the DU-BJP government 'anti-Dalit and anti-students'. 'This shows that the JDU-BJP government is anti-Dalit and anti-students... The students have declared they will only get up from here once they meet Rahul Gandhi... What is the JDU-BJP government scared of? The truth is that the students will reveal their poor condition under the JDU-BJP government to Rahul Gandhi... The preparations for today's programme had been going on for some time. But permission for the programme was deliberately cancelled last night when the administration found out that the students are planning to attend the event in large numbers,' Choudhary told ANI. Earlier on April 7, Rahul Gandhi visited and joined the Congress' student wing's (NSUI) 'Palayan Roko Naukri Do' rally in Begusarai. The Bihar Legislative Assembly election for all 243 constituencies is scheduled to be held in October or November this year. The last assembly elections were held in October-November 2020. (ANI)

"Is it against the Constitution to communicate with Dalits": Mallikarjun Kharge slams Bihar govt

New Delhi [India], May 15 (ANI): Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge slammed Bihar's NDA government for allegedly stopping Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi by the Bihar police when he was on his way to the Ambedkar hostel in Darbhanga. The Congress president asked if it is a 'sin' to talk about the employment and education of the Dalit and backward class students. Kharge further highlighted that there is a 'height' of dictatorship in the JDU-BJP Bihar government which prevented Rahul Gandhi to attend the 'Shiksha Nyay Samvad' program in Darbhanga. 'Now is it against the Constitution to communicate with Dalit, deprived and backward class students? Is it a sin to talk to them about their education, their recruitment exams and jobs? It is the height of dictatorship that the JDU-BJP government prevented Rahul Gandhi from attending the 'Shiksha Nyay Samvad' program at the Ambedkar Hostel in Darbhanga, Bihar. The birthplace of democracy, Bihar will remember this injustice and will give a befitting reply to JDU-BJP when the time comes', Mallikarjun Kharge's 'X' post said. Rahul Gandhi also criticised the Bihar government and called them a 'Double Engine Dhokebaaz Sarkaar', while addressing a gathering in Darbhanga on Thursday. The latter alleged that he was stopped by the Bihar Police on his way to Ambedkar hostel in Darbhanga and said that the central government is against democracy, the Constitution, and the minorities. 'The Bihar Police tried to stop me. But they could not stop me because your power (minority community) is watching over me. We told PM Narendra Modi that you have to conduct census... Under your pressure, PM Narendra Modi announced caste census in the country. Scared of your pressure, he placed the Constitution on his forehead. But their government is against democracy, the Constitution, and the minorities. This is the government of Adani-Ambani and not yours,' Rahul Gandhi said, addressing the gathering in Darbhanga. 'I guarantee that the moment our government forms in India and in Bihar, it will implement everything that you deserve,' he added. In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi questioned Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar saying that since when did dialogue become a 'crime in the state.' 'NDA's 'Double Engine Dhokebaaz Sarkaar' in Bihar is preventing me from interacting with Dalit and backward students in Ambedkar Hostel. Since when has dialogue become a crime? Nitish ji, what are you afraid of? Do you want to hide the state of education and social justice in Bihar?' the Lok Sabha LoP said. Rahul Gandhi's car was allegedly stopped by the Police from going to the event at Ambedkar Hostel in Darbhanga, before he got on foot to attend and address the students at the event at the hostel.
